Just read it myself (I'm 35) and my reaction was WTF??? This doesn't seem like a children's tale but an LSD trip. It literally does not make sense and there's little direction to the story. My impression is that the imagery and creativity inspired by this book were better than the book itself.

Lewis carol actually wrote this book because their was a kid named Alice and he was really fond of her he her and her sisters were at a river bank he told this story to amuse them the real Alice asked for him to write it down so she wouldn’t forget it so he did later got it published and that’s the story behind the book

Actually the relationship between Carroll and Liddel was only the impetus to PUBLISH the story known as “Alice’s Adventures Under Ground.” The final story, details, and eventual sequel were fairly complicated creations, including many philosophical and mathematical concepts that are manifestly not the requisite desire of a young girl.

Carroll apparently had epilepsy. Not the grand mal kind but another, physically perceptual variety, that made him feel as though he were stretching and shrinking, etc. I used to have similar episodes which were CRAY. Alice happened to get the stage sets!

I discovered Thug Notes on accident. Now I can't stop watching. I sent a link to my daughter, who has an English undergraduate degree and nearly a Masters in TESOL, and loves good literature, and she says she's now addicted to Thug Notes! Way too cool! Let me tell you about my day. I woke up to a backed up sewage drain, which had filled a bathtub and flooded the bathroom. My cars radiator has somehow emptied, and is on metaphorical bricks until payday. I haven't shit in a week. And my bank account was at a soul crushing $2.08. However my bank charged me a $10 monthly fee, and then subsequently feed me an overdraft charge of $35. But hey, New thug notes. I guess it isn't all bad. Thanks for brightening my day.

hploveshack99 Maybe they should do a few shorter videos on short stories, or some two-part videos with two short stories by the same author. There are a lot of writers who primarily work i short stories, and a lot of classes that require you to read a lot of short stories, so it just makes sense. Plus, it's interesting to compare two texts to each other.

Wow, great interpretation Sparky! So many just try to call it a drug book without looking any deeper. It's so refreshing to see someone take the time to look up the facts. I've read a lot of the classics you review and I'm always impressed with the depth of your research and how entertaining your point of view is. Actually, here's one about mathematics and Alice you might not know. The court scene was based on Carroll's problem with Algebra. This was being taught as the new math and Carroll was one of the people most vocally against it. In his own words he compared it to sentencing someone before a trial, then negating any theory that didn't lead to the sentence. Flash forward a year or two and boom: Alice hits the shelves. Maybe a coincidence, but you can find all kinds of mathematical allegories throughout the story that depict a world gone mad simply through a flaw in it's fundamental logic. (much like the Cheshire beheading you made reference to). Keep up the great work, I love all of these videos!

I love this book. Many movies have been made of it but often times they mix the two books or just fail to do it justice. The real humor often comes from Alice's inner monologue as she reacts to her surroundings. Thanks for the great analysis. Peace.

I read this book for a Victorian Literature class, and I was surprised, Greg, that you didn't mention that Carroll actually hung out with a lot of kids and, with their and their parents' permission, took nude photos of them (not all of them were nude, though), and that he actually got to know them personally such that he would tell them funny stories like Alice in Wonderland. In fact, Alice was a real girl, Alice Liddell, who was among three sisters that Carroll hung around with, with Alice being his favorite (btw, there have been virtually no records saying that he ever engaged in any sexual relations with any of the kids he hung out with), so when he's having Alice in this story, he's thinking of his favorite Liddell girl.

Dude was a huge creep and even if I don't really buy the "virtually no records he ever engaged in any sexual relations" part, I'm willing to accept that he indeed may have not done it. Not all creeps have the sexual kind of obsession, or have their fascination grow to that extreme. I'm even reminded right now of that case in Japan where a guy kidnapped a little girl and hid her at his home for a whole 3 years and treated her very poorly, even reaching the point of hitting and harming, but never did anything sexual with her, despite there being no circumstances that would stop him. He was still a huge piece of shit for what he did but he didn't cross this boundary. Some creeps go rogue, some don't, and even if it doesn't seem so, there is, in fact, a HUGE difference.

Star Ghanaat Maybe Thug Notes can make it more interesting and fun than it turned out to be for me. I know it's supposed to be quite funny and biting, but it's sort of lost its edge in the last three hundred years.
