Today we are discussing Disney's Wish and why I think it misses the mark. Disney animation and Pixar used to be king so what happened? Disney's Wish strarring Ariana Debose and Chris Pine is not going to do well at the box office either. Can disney turned their animated movies around?

I’ve seen old concepts where Magnifico and Amaya were both the villains, where Star wasn’t a tiny plushie thing but instead a shape-shifting boy Asha was going to fall in love with, and honestly *every* other concept was better than what we got.

I think one of the biggest issues with Disney is that they're focusing too much on the live action remakes. Puss in Boots the Last Wish was a great family film. Jack Horner is totally an alagorie for Disney. The magic is fading but other studios are saving animation.

Those live action remakes are terrible too, for the most part. I wish they would stop making them altogether and get back to making good movies like Puss In Boots The Last Wish. I totally agree that other studios are totally leaving them in the dust at this point, and it's their own fault.

@@MothGirl007Agreed. At first, I thought the live-action remakes could be a good idea if they were as different as Cinderella and continued to make animated movies like Princess and the Frog and Tangled. But nope. With very few exceptions, their films have been devoid of creativity and heart. I personally blame the studio heads, not the creatives. It’s heartbreaking.

A lot of the ways the older Disney princesses are characterized are lies. Namely, they are accused of having no agency or personality when they did. Snow White was kind and naive but she was NOT a pushover to the dwarves. She was willing to scold and tease them even as a guest in their house. She had a lot of personality. Even Aurora, who had very little screentime, and her storyline which involves being lied to about her plight and being entranced by Malificent (both of which remove agency by no fault of her own), was shown to have some personality when she shows she is wise to the fairies' lies to get her out of the house and is shown to have a weak resolve in her interaction with the prince due to her shelteredness. She is given a lot of personality and characterization of positive and negative traits in such a short time.
@dustymcwari4468
@dustymcwari4468 7 ай бұрын
People ignore that the dwarves didn't just let Snowwhite stay at their house, she offered them a service in exchange of shelter, with her cleaning their house serving as early payment, and she cooking for them was another deal she made for them, in which she only asked for them to wash their hands as trade, something only Grumpy refused, and was soon hilariously reprimanded for being filthy and rude She didn't get the respect of the dwarves for doing nothing, she helped them, they helped her back, and she even eventually earned the trust of Grumpy so much he was the frontrunner when the evil queen poisoned Snowwhite, and was hit the hardest for the tragedy

Completely agree! Everyone forgets that Snow White, a tiny 14 year old girl, was nearly stabbed to death while just picking some flowers on a VERY rare day off, and then told to run for her life into the WOODS, with no supplies, no warning, nothing but the clothes on her back. She was rightfully scared out of her mind! But very quickly, she took hold of the situation, and her own mental health. If the one thing that would make her feel like she could go on living was to sing a cutesy song with some birds, then that’s what she was going to do. And after that, she found the dwarves’ house and immediately set to work making it nice for them so they’d let her stay. That was some good strategizing. She used what she was good at, her unique strengths, and survived. Of course cooking and cleaning was her strength, it was all her stepmother ever let her do! And she was very much a motherly figure to the seven of them, and wasn’t afraid to let them know her opinions. And of course she was dreaming of the handsome prince, he was probably one of the few kind people in her whole life, and, again, she was only 14! So yeah. I’ve always been impressed by Snow White; I watched her movie a million times growing up and when I rewatched it as an adult it really hit me how misunderstood she was.
@vlo4829
@vlo4829 7 ай бұрын
@@cellytron Exactly! And her relationship with the animals wasn't JUST for the "cute" moment; for Snow White (and Aurora) it helped highlight how alone and friendless they really were. Snow White's "Whistle While You Work" is a song about making the best of things in spite of the situation. It was literally about singing to help you get chores done, but it's also an allegory for the broader mindset she has about the dire situation that is her life. She's a girl in exile who KNOWS she will be killed if she is found, but she still tries to find or make happy moments to get her through it so that she doesn't give up and despair.

A problem with the villain, is that they gave him a wife. The problem with giving a villain a loving wife that is also a good person is that then you have someone that cares deeply for that person and has to confront the heart-shattering reveal that said person is a villain and has to see the said person, whom they had given their love to, and who probably loved them back, suffer the consequences. It wouldnt be a terrible idea but you would need excellent writting in order to pull off such an intense emotional moment, and yet from the spoilers Ive heard, the writers just ignored it as if Amaya and Magnifico had never loved each other.

I've seen the movie, ( spoilers, spoilers spoilers) its not that they act like she never loved each other it's..... just not enough time to convey the depths of her emotions. She has a change of heart off screen after he uses the evil book and immediately almost kills her just for slightly implying she agreed with the hero ( but he's cursed, so his personality has been forcefully changed ), shows up to the hero to announce she's helping betray the king in a musical number ( that cannot at all convey the heartache this must cause her ). And then very soon after she begs them to check if the spell he's under can be broken, the book says he's evil forever sorry, and she's like " oh well, he brought this on himself " and then she kind of has some oddly lighthearted banter with him after he's defeated that has the vibe of " Oh, you~ take this scamp to the dungeon ". There's a slight twinge of girl power " girl you're too good for him " energy there, but really the two had such good chemistry when they were in love you really just kind of feel bad that the hero effectively caused her divorce to happen lmao.

I think this film runs into the same problem that Chicken Little had. It's creating a checklist and trying to cash in on other successful films without realizing what made those films successful. I think this film could have worked if they just committed to what they wanted to do, but they let popular opinion sway them and it comes off feeling restricted. To Disney, I want to say this: do your own thing. Don't let people dictate what you want to do, and give more creative freedom. Make more films like Meet the Robinsons, Bolt, Lilo and Stitch, and The Emperor’s New Groove. Surprise me. Interest me. They don't have to be 10/10 films, but they have to be good and interesting. If you're wondering why indie animation is taking off, it's because of this reason.

I study animation, and when it comes to the technical issues, especially two scenes caught my eye. First one, when Magnifico change the dude into a knight, the background behind the columns was plain color. Blue/orange combo, but plain color. Not even a hint of clouds. That came out so lazy, aswell as the second scene, where Asha is on the tree, the sea in the background is not even moving. Sea...not moving. What the hell Disney? Also an amount of scenes with central composition, and the scenes with characters seen from the side (aka: the most boring shot possible) is HUGE. Storyboards for this movie must have been made by interns (no shame, everyone starts somewhere, however if we are not capable of making a compelling story yet, we should get help from experienced people who correct our mistakes...). Also the light was sometimes so off, like it's supposed to help guide you through a movie, but some choices were just so weird. Same for color...remember Hades' or Scar's color settings? all dark, with a slight hint of color, very dramatic, and here? Magnifico comes out like My Little Pony, surrounded mostly by pink/purple/white colors. Even if he didn't start out as totally evil, a foreshadowing with color wouldn't hurt. This movie is so meh...

Disney has had a weird on/off problem is scene lighting/composition for a while now. Idk why, might be the personal preference of one of the executives. See Avengers endgame, for example, the lighting, scenes and tones were so bleh, grey, messy and muddy. Encanto still at least tried, so I can only assume someone, somewhere had to deliberately meddle with wish to make its scene planning worse.

This is not a hybrid, mix nor a fusion between 2D and 3D animation. It's a medium mimic and trying to be something it's not. It's just a cheap unfinished cel-shading filter which is not a hybrid, mix nor fusion between the two techniques. It's just 3D models adding some outlines with limited use of color, shadows and lighting. That's why it look cheap like a PS2 graphics as well as it's a common cheap technique amongst mass-produced children's shows that you don't require much effort for. A true 2D and 3D hybrid/mix/fusion would look something like Roger Rabbit (but with CGI), Maui's animated tattoos or the Pixar's short Paperman. There could be various of creative directions and diverse outcomes by fusing/mixing/hybridize between 2D and 3D. While Spiderverse did try to look like a comic book at appropriate times but was more aware surrounded it (maybe because comic books are a completely different medium) as well as doing its own thing with being much more experimental with various of art and animation styles. It looks better because they heavily tweaked the outlines and the models so that it would fit the stylized scenes and perspectives to avoid looking like a typical stiff cel-shaded video game graphics too. As well as they had much more effort and care than Wish.

To me I think the villain should have leaned into his strength! It isn't that he's a weak villain, it's that he's a complicated villain. In any other story that would be a wonderful thing, but their obsession with trying to frame him like a "classic disney villain" stripped him of his potential to be a morally gray, well intentioned extremist. He has ALL this setup showing that he's actually a very complex person with a tragic past and a loving wife and clearly, based on that one song, some kind of passion for protecting people. Frame him like an over protective, coddling provider, maybe even keep his vain personality and make him someone that doesn't realize that his desire to be seen as a competent and successful king ( spurred on by his history of watching his family's kingdom fall ) has gotten in the way of his own principles and have him realize that. BUT they can't do that, because that would be yet another redeemable, modern villain, and its very clear to me that they kind of swooped in at the last minute to afflict him with the evil-ification beam and make him literally irredeemable by the rule of magic.

Reusing models and put a cel-shaded filter on it trying to be something it's not is just lazy and distracting. Not sure if anyone has thought this but though I agree that the characters look bad or not "finished" in some scenes, I think I may know what they were going for. I thought of this as I rewatched Snow White after this film. In those older 2D films, characters were flat by design with all of their colors one solid piece without any textures. The backgrounds however were fully rendered and shaded with hand-painted pieces. In this film, the backgrounds are given the same watercolor painted style, and the characters have very basic but simple textures and shadowing. So maybe they were trying to give it that old vibe just using 3D models. It didn't exactly land well but I can kind of see what they were aiming for.

Magnifico isn't evil. Period. Not all wish should be granted; IRL people wish for bad/selfish things all the time ('God Help the Outcasts' from Hunchback made a clear reference to this), but I guess in the naive world of Neo-Disney, everybody wishes for sweets, sprinkles, and sunshine all the time. Although he shouldn't have appointed himself the determiner of which wish should be granted, doesn't make him bad. Asha and the townspeople had nothing against only select wishes being granted, until they realised the chances of THEIRS being granted are very small, like wth?! This speaks a lot about their anti-dictatorship messaging that just feels so jarring and executed poorly; they could've made instead of granting wishes that are good for the town, he granted those that clearly benefit him instead though morally wrong like real-life politicians. This would've fix problems both regarding the real nature of wishes and political corruption.
@bringbackthedarkness
@bringbackthedarkness 7 ай бұрын
The fact that magnifico took people’s wishes and led them on some false hope that one day their wish would be granted is already bad. When you also take into account that he doesn’t fully explain how those people who give up their wish lose a part of themselves, he becomes even worse. Asha clearly explains how if the wishes were bad, they should be stopped, but in the movie, magnifico was villainizing innocent wishes because he wanted to keep them for himself, thus making the people of rosas ignorant and lost. Asha discovered that magnifico wouldn’t even consider returning the wishes to the people, and that’s truly when she started to push against the whole wish ceremony thing, because it showed that magnifico was content in keeping the people of rosas around his finger. Magnifico is absolutely evil, especially knowing that he intentionally resorted to forbidden/dark magic just to keep his power :/

Crushing a dream will not scare a kid, what are Disney doing here? They should of kept the spoiled prince angle and started with a silent montage of Magnifico and his brother, the king, overshadowing him as they grew. Brother says, "I'm proud of you" and makes him wish granter. Magnifico searches for his brothers dream for a peaceful kingdom and crushes it. King forgets his dream and there's unrest. Until Magnifco wishes to be the king of a perfect empire and locks his brother away. Everyone is unquestioningly loyal to Magnifico... except for Asha who CARES TOO MUCH so she sets out on her adventure to figure out why he would abandon his kingdom. Now crushing the dream is scary and matters and her flawlessness has a purpose.

I saw Wish yesterday and I honestly thought it doesn't deserve all the hate I've been hearing from critics, however I also agree improvements could have been made. Its not a stellar Disney flick like I hoped, but it wasn't awful either. Many things about it were still pretty good and I found enjoyable, mainly Ariana's singing and Chris Pine's over the top performance! The movie's job was mainly supposed to be a big nod to all of Disney's animated films and I feel like the movie did its job, but the down side of that is that it struggles with being its own story and hitting the high mark Disney is known for because of nodding to the past so much.

Yeah I think the problem with this female protagonist is that she has some things from the others but lacks what makes the others work. Anna clearly is taking the wrong decisions as a result of the fallen bond with her sister, Rapunzel literally escapes captivity, and Mirabel is her family's black sheep and outcast. So this female character needed either an actual flaw to overcome OR something outside of her control that poses a challenge or brings about change for her. And from what I gather the plot about wishes isn't very strong or effective at that, like it doesn't even seem to have ANYTHING to do with her personally.

Final Fantasy IX is my favorite title in that game series. I mention IX because it's full of throwbacks and easter eggs from its previous games. I didn't know that when I was twelve and played it for the first time. I dived in blind and loved everything about that game's story, even though most of its member berries went over my head. This is why good writing is essential. No amount of nostalgia can mask poorly written characters and bad storytelling. Conversely, no amount of missed easter eggs can take away from a good story.

I watched Wish last night, and here's my long review. TLDR: I have never seen such a complete Meh of a movie from Disney in my life. Even Chicken Little was better. Magnifico was dumb, and went villain WAY too fast. He had like 2 minutes of speaking, one song, and then boom, villain arc unlocked. The not-dwarves were dumb, mostly pointless, and I couldn't tell you Grumpy, Happy, Bashful, Dopey, or Sneezy's actual names. Sleepy's turn didn't make sense and came out of nowhere. Happy and Bashful were completely pointless, could have been completely removed, and nothing would have changed. Doc was the only one that moved the story to any real degree. Sleepy kinda did, but he could have been replaced by any generic evil sidekick. It didn't have to be Sleepy. The goat was annoying, could have been removed, and nothing would have changed. Other Disney Princess sidekicks had at least one moment where they did something of consequence, like the mice getting Cinderella's dress pieces, being her horses, and getting her key. Valentino added NOTHING. Why did an all powerful mage who can move things without even moving his hands be stopped by a bookcase falling on him long enough for a middle aged woman and a 100 year old man to get away? They made him so stupid powerful that it made zero sense for him to 1) want more power and 2) for any "challenge" to be laughable cause he had to take temporary stupid pills for it to work against him. His motivation was dumb. His jump straight to "I'm being threatened!" by a light was so insanely stupid. His wife going from devoted to backstabbing in the space of a heartbeat was out of left field. She should have been shown to realizing his flaws, and playing the dutiful wife to protect herself from the beginning. When he went full villain within 7 minutes of his introduction, he surely was showing his egomaniacal tendencies long before Asha dared question him. The music was either good or bad, no middle ground. And I don't know if they just kept repeating the music or it was just that forgettable, but I swear the good guys sang the same song at least 3 different times in the movie. The random talking animals were annoying and "quirky" more often than not. In fact, over half the characters could fall into the "quirky and adorkable" trope. Better movie if they still wanted to do wishes: selfish girl, Asha, keeps failing when her friends need help with things. She meets a fallen star that needs to grant wishes/dreams to get back into the sky, and forcibly makes Asha help it. Through this, she sees how much she's failed people and the beauty that wishes and dreams can create, causing her to grow and change into a better person that devotes herself to helping others, ending in her being granted fairy godmother status by the stars.

I was so hyped for this one. It was the comeback of Disney for me. Nope. The music is simply outstanding. But i worried that we will barely explore the lore, the world that is so beautifully depicted in the artbook and having. I wished for a nice narrative complexity (not too much and no too little). They had an amazing setup for that! The villain follows a gray morality sense [not granting every wish is sensible] but theres the aspect of essentially playing God. And the immaturity of Asha being the bridge between "everyone's wish is important and should be granted" and "there must be a better way to handle this with equity". The immature view of young children vs the parental struggle of being just and fair. IT WAS RITH THERE !. But nope, the story dismisses the complexity of Magnifico by completely focusing on his over the top vanity at the end and giving the message of "you are perfect, your wish is perfect, just work on yourself realize your wish". (So focus on the self and the 'i want so i get it') Heck, there was even an opportunity for the WHOLE community to understand that not every wish can be granted but we can still be grateful with life, i dont know, anything but the simple narrative they chose! Is as bad a narrative (for me) as the Christmas movies that have the presents disapear or something to teach that "is not the presents that make Christmas good, but friends and family" and having the protagonists getting presents anyway at the end! There, i ranted all that i needed. Have a beautiful day everyone and happy holidays ❤

I feel a lot of modern villains have the issue of they can't fully be a villain. Not just Disney but in general. A villain can't be evil just for the sake of being evil. It's like studios want the villain still to be liked, even though they're the bad guy. People can like villains as characters yet still dislike them for how bad they are. People like Scar or Cruella for their cadences their personalities. Meanwhile one betrayed his brother and got him killed, and the other literally wants to kill dogs. Just let a bad guy be a bad guy and absolutely revel in it. That's where you can play up their personality more, it allows more presence.

I think the points of the king are highly being missed and were definitely missed in this review: The arch of his character is that he has created in his mind, a utopian society. When in reality, it is a dystopian society. He established Rosas to create a place that would make those who live there happy and safe, but at the expense of taking away their goals and wishes (what makes them unique and individuals). He feels that this is the right thing to do and it does indeed make his citizens happy and loyal, but it's because they are living in an "ignorance is bliss" lifestyle. It isn't until Asha discovers that he will never grant many of the wishes (the deepest desires of the citizens hearts) that what he has created in this kingdom is wrong. The king does not see it this way and says that he thinks wishes and dreams are dangerous. He sees himself as good and it isn't until he let's himself be influenced by the magic book that he truly becomes an evil and ruthless character who then discovers that not only does keeping the wishes make a "utopia", but they also give him more power when absorbed. This is important because it shows that the King never really cared about the citizens, but rather he cared about power and control more than anything else all along, even if he himself never realized that. In the third act he absorbed many of the wishes and Star himself (Asha's celestial sent guide who was sent out of her own desperation) which causes a deep grief in the citizens since they are their deepest and purest desires that will bring their lives meaning and joy. He is also seen torturing everyone with the dark magic in the climax of the film with Asha at the heart of this physical torture. I think they did really well on this villain because not only did he give that nostalgia back to original Disney baddies that we haven't seen in a while, they made him unique in that he starts off "good" with good intentions, and is oblivious to what he is doing is wrong, and when his citizens call him out on it, he then slowly becomes an evil character thirsty for power. In my opinion these dimensions made him a far more interesting characters rather than if he was "just evil for evil sake". Disney is all about wishes coming true and in this film they made that a very literal part of the story, I enjoyed it overall.

Mmmm... but did they convey that well enough? Yes, you came to that conclusion and so did a few others, but overall was that something that was easily picked up or say nuanced? From what I'm hearing, not many people actually were aware of that. Another reviewer, Saberspark who usually likes movies that the general public and critics dislike, did not mention that in his review and usually he picks up on something like that. And that's a huge problem with modern Disney. They aren't able to tell good stories anymore. They rely to heavily on old tropes or as in the case with their remakes, they rely too heavily on stories they have told before. Personally, I was a little interested in seeing Wish but decided against it because I haven't liked a single Disney movie in a very, very long time.

Went to see Wish today just to give it a chance and OMG Disney has definitely lost their touch. This was by far the *WORST* movie I've seen from them. Not even 5 minutes in we get a song, and there were *WAY* too many songs. All the "jokes" fell flat, there wasn't enough of a story or world building. There was some definite "woke" messaging in there and it really irritated me. I'm truly sorry to have paid to see this garbage. The Whyte men were villains in the movie *rolls eyes* and yeah, it was just stupid. I didn't like any of the songs, I'm over the whole "adorkable" personality troupe with females as of the last decade or so. I f*cking *HATED* the goat, he was the worst character of all. I didn't care for the animation style either. The magic is truly gone and I'm just disheartened by it all :( I grew up with the Disney Renaissance so my standards are set pretty high. Yes I know the movie wasn't made for me or my peers and that it's intended for children, but as a Disney Renaissance child there's that sweet nostalgia my generation has with our beloved classics ♥so that's why we go to see the latest films, we're hoping for that same magic we grew up with. Gaston's villain song is NOT the tavern song.... his villain song is when he ralleys the townsfolk to 'kill the beast' AND IT'S A DAMN STRONG VILLAIN SONG

I watched it today and by the time I got home I’ve already forgotten almost everything in the movie.

I think a perfect Disney 100 Anniversary Movie would've been Hansel and Gretel. It's perfect for the Holidays, appeals to boys and girls. There's so much to build on with Hansel and Gretel. Missed opportunity.

The most evil Disney villain of all was definitely Lady Tremaine. And she was 100% in power.

What if… someone wished someone else dead? Two women wished for the same man to be their husband? A man wished to be king? The crazy possibilities are endless. That’s why the king was being wise in knowing who gets their wish granted.

Along with its lyrical issues, "This Wish" sounds like there's something rhythmically wrong with it half the time. Like the words aren't being sung on the right beats. I'm not sure how else to describe it.

People crying over not having real villains and movies being about generational trauma...so far we only got three movies I remember of, I think you're rather annoyed at the villain misunderstood bit because so far the two movies did well with generational trauma. Just because you can't resonate with those movies, doesn't mean it's bad and yes i'm talking about Coco, Encanto and Turning Red. (Coco also had just a twist villain and it honestly worked)

You what would been cool . If the King was like Wheatley. You know given power, but he got addicted to it, then he went insane. I would have loved to see that movie.

Sigh, this is gonna be yet another Disney movie I wait to see until I'm on a long haul flight and it's included in the in-flight movies. I ditched Disney+ many moons ago. And I'm super disappointed by both of these things.

Do you know who is the 39:48 Disney villain that promised dreams is just to crush them? Ursula!and to just try to achieve that you had to pay a huge price,like selling your voice for example,or basically your soul,and you risked being transformed into a sort of a plant and being held prisoner forever by her in this status..and you want me to make me believe King Magnifico is bad as Ursula?

It's a shame ... I was hoping Wish would be better than another live-action remake. I'm let down, because it could've had potential.
