I planted some new wisteria a few months ago. They are doing well. However trying to train the new vines. They die about 6 inches on the ends.I am very gentle and hardly even touch or bend them??

Great videos, very informative, thankyou. Quick question: I am training mine up a wall espalier style as you have demonstrated, it’s 5 years old now and flowering nicely - but, the really strong growth has set off sideways and I’d like it to go a bit higher before calling the height. Can I cut this leading growth right back to the main stem to retrain it without damaging the plant and if so when should I do this?! Many thanks. Ben

Cutting that leading growth could be an option. Or you could just let a side shoot grow and tie that in to go up the wall for extra height? My advice would be to do structural pruning in the winter, when you can see the skeleton of the plant. Hope this is helpful.

Great video and very informative! We’ve just had to totally cut back Wisteria from the front of our 4 story apartment block due to the plant growing through the balconies and the stem compromising the glass partitions. Admittedly, it was not really managed very well. However, the plant is now cut down to a clump of about eight, sic foot long stems. So, my question is, where will new growth appear? Do new puds sprout from an old established “branch” that has no buds or, will it only develop new growth from the base? We decided to leave the established stems at a hight of 6 foot so that we can train new growth up the front of the balconies rather than cutting it down to the ground. And, this time ensuring that the stems stay on the outside of the balconies and trained along with guiding wires.

Hi - With a hard prune like this, you will see the plant send out significant growth, some of which will come from the base. You will also see new growth appear from the part you have tied in. In the summer, prune this new growth back to about 5 buds, then down to three the following winter. Thank you for watching.

Thanks, great info! One question please, do you normally need to tighten or loosen the tensioner over time? I would have thought that with the wisteria branch growing in thickness, it would need loosening. Or do you expect the wire to stretch?

Hi, I have have found that in some situations you need to tighten as the wire stretches. But in some situations I have had to loosen the wire - I guess it depends on how tight you have the wire initially. Also if an area is quite windy and there is lots of movement, this can loosen the wire over time. Thank you for watching

Great video. After trying a lot of vids I finally found one that is clear and thorough. I do have two questions: 1) can you please tell me what kind of rope you use to tie the plant onto the wire. Hope I haven't overlooked it in your video... 2) How do I guide it from the start? I have an new wisteria of about 30 cm high that needs to grow up for about 2.5 to 3 meters, before it can go sideways. Do I also use wire for it? Wouldn't it keep going around it? Or do I need to do this differently? Or can it not be done at all :-(

Hi, I use jute twine. With your new wisteria, allow the main stem to grow to its desired point, side shoots will develop. Once the main shoot has reached the desired high, cut it off (to a bud) this will Focus the energy further down the plant giving you more side shoots to work with - which will give you more flowers 😀

We keep as much of the plant tied back to supports as we can. Although the plant will support some growth by itself.

Thanks for the video. If your tyng the plant to the wires, whats the point of the wires? Why not just put in eyes?

Hi, The wires are there to tie onto as the plant grows between the vine eyes. Thank you for watching

One question I have always had is how to avoid having the twine itself cut into the vine as it grows? Seems like you should have something to spread the load over bigger area of the trunk.

Any points where you have tied the plant to a support should be checked every year to make sure it is not restricting the plant or cutting in. if it is, the tie should be cut and another tie put on with room for growth. I hope this is helpful. thank you for watching.

Hi, I don’t where you are , but I like wisteria. I planted mine from seeds, and never bloomed for 15 years! It died in winter, back to life in spring! Do you have any suggestion? Can you share the plants, please? If you are in the USA?

Wisteria grown from seed can take a long time to flower. If you have had it for 15 years and have been pruning it regularly, then you may be in luck over the next few years. Wisteria are usually sold as grafted plants, which will ensure flowers on much younger plants. I hope this is helpful and thank you for watching. (I am in the uk)

Did I miss you putting in raw plugs? I am trying copper ferrules and crimper rather than winding wire back around itself

You did indeed miss me putting the plugs in - I use 7mm plugs with the vine eyes. Will have to check out your crimps on my next visit 😀 Cheers for watching buddy 👍

You can train wisteria to go in pretty much any direction you like. I will try and find the time to make a video with some more tips on training wisteria soon.

How do you train a young wisteria from first planting? And do you prune in it’s first year. I’m worried they’ll be nothing left!

With a young wisteria - Tie in any growth that you want to establish as the main structure of the plant, you then allow these to grow on until they have reached the desired height/ length. Then everything else gets primed to 3/5 buds. I am planning on making a video about this at soon. But I hope this was helpful. Thank you for watching 😀

@@TheFullyChargedGardener I've just watched all of your Wisteria vidoes! Thanks. I too have a brand new Wisteria Sinensis Prolific which is about 5 to 6 foot tall growing up a bamboo cane. I want to train it along a fence which has concrete posts and gravel boards with the fence panels that slide in and out. I have planted it next to one of the concrete posts in the middle of the garden and the Wisteria comes to about 1 foot above the fence . I intend to train it left and right along the top and middle of the fence panels. There is a foot wide trellis along the top of the fence panels but I will ignore that and put the steel wire directly into the concrete fence posts and grow it along them instead (as I've heard the wooden trellis will just rot and won't take the weight of the Wisteria). Can you please advise what I need to do with the top of the plant? Do I cut it off in line with the top of the fence and wait for 2 side shoots or do I just bend it over to one side when it starts growing more and then take a new side shoot to run along the other side? I know the fence idea is not ideal but my house is not suitable for growing on and hence going along a big fence instead. Please help! Thanks again.

@@M1K3YA1 Thank you for watching all the videos, it is fantastic to hear that you found them helpful. It is a great idea to place the vine eyes directly into the concrete posts. My advice would be to bend over the top growth - this will grow very fast. I hope you have lots of fun training your new plant and lots of Bootiful flowers in the future.
