New England, 1692: religious hysteria infects the people of small-town Salem and brings about a ruthless manhunt. At a time when Europe has largely overcome the witch craze, dozens of people are accused of sorcery and executed. To this day, the case of Salem fascinates scholars and artists alike since the cause of the collective mania remains a mystery. Competing theories name a combination of religious hysteria, aggressively suppressed sexuality, the fear of the “devilish Indians”, common avarice, and the dual worldview of the puritans. The episode is a watershed for the young colony and one of the darkest chapters in the history of the United States.

I just discovered your channel this morning and I am totally hooked! First off, I love history more than anything in the world! Secondly, I had the privilege of visiting Salem 20 years ago. I stayed at The Hawthorne Inn in Concord and am totally in love with New England!Your channel has helped bring all those wonderful, cherished memories back to life plus have given me some new ones. When you announced that you hit 200 subscribers in the episode I just watched, you hesitated. I thought it was going to be 200,00 subscribers! Lol I thought you must have at least that! Not a lot of us history lovers in the world, are there?! How I wish we both lived in Salem! Your little channel has brought so much joy and excitement into my life. Thank you and God bless. Recovering from major surgery so on to more of your episodes!

@@caverlady It was definitely not ergot poisoning. These girls were very sheltered. They weren't witnessing a lot of the wars w/ the Native Americans that were taking place up in Maine at the time. The most likely odds were the attention they received or hysteria they got caught up in - but realized they could not stop w/o punishment.

I think the darkest chapter is today. Never had there been more mental problems than there are today, never had children been so abused and killed as they are today, never had people been so selfish and self centered as we are today, never had people hated themselves so much, never had children been so reckless and disrespectful and the list goes on..

The first few might have been done in the name of God. The rest was out of pure evil, and only stopped when the villagers started accusing the magistrates and their wives of being witches/wizards. THEN they Salem Witchcraft Bullshit ended. But today, those white people who murdered innocent people for power/in the name of Satan have babies like Brittany and Abigail Hansen because God specifically warns us about our children sometimes being the ones to pay for our sins.

It's so strange how the Bible is depicted as "the Good Book" and a guide to morality, yet the more strictly and literally people follow it, the more corrupt they become. The Puritans were a perfect example of this irony.

We're off to a bad start with the title. It wasn't the United States. It would be more accurate to say, "....One of the darkest chapters in the history of the British Empire.". It was British common law that allowed this to happen. Basically, if you were accused of something, you had to prove you were innocent, rather than the accuser having to prove the allegation.

The only reason the Salem Witchcraft Trials ended was because people were starting to wise up and started blaming the magistrates and their wives of being witches and wizards. There were more villagers than magistrates and those magistrates started getting scared. They all knew none of those people were witches but weren't ready to be dunked on their own. For their sins today, they have babies like Brittany and Abigail Hansen. God specifically warns that sometimes, your children pay for your sins.

The Salem witch trials didn't occur in the United States. The witch hunt happened in the Massachusetts colony in 1682-1693, 82 years before the colonies declared independence from England. The British Crown didn't recognize the USA until September 3, 1783. Therefore, the witch trials happened under British law and this makes the the Salem witch hunt one of the darkest chapters in the history of England, but not the United States as the US didn't even exist at the time.

I know it's just your intention to offer documentaries that are out there and I appreciate the topic, but it was really hard to tolerate the misleading words of these "researchers". The missing facts, misleading information, and portrayal of Reverend Parris and his family is propaganda at best. The accusers were the children and relatives of Reverend Parris who was pissed off about the split in the congregation. Many of the accused were folks who didn't like that he was hired and split from the church. No mention of that important fact. He exacted revenge through his children. The narrator said the Tituba was a slave of a neighbor. That isn't true. She was enslaved by the Reverence Parris. My 9th great-grandfather Bray Wilkins had a run-in with the courts. His granddaughter decided to elope with an agent of the court named John Willard. Bray Wilkins told the Witch Trial Court that Mr. Willard had given him a strange look and given him kidney stones. His granddaughters husband was hung August 19, 1692. Four of the 200 people accused of being witches and 3 of the 19 hanged were my relatives. They were the sisters of my 8th Great-Grandfather. Rebecca Nurse was featured in this video. She was 70 when they hung her. Her younger sister, my Great Aunt Mary Easty (mother of eleven children) was hung September. Author Howe warning against the horrors that can "...befall people from the best of all possible intentions" is way too much. The accusers knew EXACTLY what they were doing. It doesn't take much research of the subject to know she has no idea what she's talking about. She's naive at best and DEFINITELY promoting misinformation. The who video--except for the very ending--seems to be a "Well, these pious Christians were only doing what they know best for their time." Couldn't be further from the truth. The persecution of people by Christians continues often cannibalizing their own in the process.

You always know when a historian doesn’t come from a Christian background on all of this information. No person that considers themselves a Christian would ever ever admit to being in league with Satan. Just uttering that in gest would make it true. A good Christian fears not being near God and they know that the next world is better than this one. That is why they refuse to utter that horrible lie. Their very soul was at stake.

A grain harvest that was tainted with fugi, mold spores or some such that would cause hallucinations, convultions, hysteria, would convince people there was the 'devil" in possession of afflicted individuals. Plus the fact that the Puritans were a mixed up bunch in the first place. The power of prayer is and was a fraudulant way of living a life. Integetrity, morality, education, common sense, a clear conscience can go a long way in any society.

interesting take on the witch hysteria from the so called experts. however they should stick to the facts instead of give their wilde and wide eyed opinions. many they things they spoke on seemed like they were no better than braying donkeys. especially when it comes to anything based around magic. funny how they spend all this time on what was said and the truths missing from these accounts. Forfeitures were left out, ergot played little, witch cakes were made using the malleus maleficarum for recipes, the divination brought by tituba would have been confusing at least of its origin one practice from various forms from various areas would have been very unlikely. There's just too much either unspoken or talked about which was clear to me they had little background in study of when it came to the super natural whether god or witchcraft. I've had easily over a decade plus reading and learning form such. including rare or exhaustive sources.

@LotusStitchandSketch
@LotusStitchandSketch Жыл бұрын
I think the very first "fits" could have possibly been caused by the Ergot fungus infecting the bread, but I think the reason more people were "afflicted" the longer it went on was more because of the attention the original girls got, and the longer it went on the more they tried to basically one-up each other. Which eventually caused things to get entirely out of control and cost 20 people their lives.
