Random fun fact: one of his most famous works when he worked in Charles IV’s court “Charles IV of Spain and his family”, you can see his subtle satirical messages in the way he painted the adults to look like they’re a perfect family, wearing expensive clothes, trying to look good, but at the same time their face is very dumb and stupid looking. The fact that the king’s not at the center of the piece but his wife is quite telling of what he thought of him. In the shadowy corner on the far left, there is his own portrait where he kinda gives of a look to the viewer like: “Take a look for yourself and see!”. The funny part of all this is that the family absolutely loved it and didn’t see how dirty he did to them

I just have to say that Hermione is a great character. However, the positive personality traits that she posesses in the films actually belong to all three of the main protags in the books. The director of the films was the one who placed a lot of attention and love on Hermione. As a Native American, it was difficult when I first came across that quote from Baum. I was pretty young when I learned about it, and had loved the Wizard of Oz books so much. It was really strange, to be being told I'd be better off dead by someone who was dead, and who was only able to tell me that because I had loved something of theirs. It made me notice a lot of pain and anger in my family, to a point where there are times where I think if we had been wiped out, it might have been better than having to live with so much trauma and rage that they and I never asked for.

13:41 I disagree that the destruction of men is a symbol of female empowerment, lest it be a male fantasy. Such is male behaviour, and such artists are likely projecting that this is our intent, because it's theirs. We've no desire to destroy them how they have us, even after everything. Men such as the painters sometimes romanticize their misogyny and say things like 'women have more power than they realize' due 'beauty' and feel that the sexual exploitation and to which we're subjected is privilege. That's my theory, anyway.

Unfortunately, Sir Terry Pratchett's "Discworld" series was not mentioned. Almost every single installment is either focused on, or directly based on Wizards and Witches, and in a VERY satirical sense. "The Colour of Magic, and Wyrd Sisters immediately come to mind. Some people have even surmised that, J.K. Rowling heavily based the Harry Potter world on Pratchett's work. That is a debate for another time.

I would have loved some more time dedicated to J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis in your wonderful video. Both of them were devout Christians and some more insight and analysis on their view and use of witches in their work would have been interesting. Especially considering your first video on the factual history of perceived witchcraft in our world linked to the Christian churches, although some information is debatable ( in a good sense, this is not an attack of any sort), I still like your sober take on the matter. I also encourage you to check out the life and work of Friedrich Spee von Langenfeld who also heavily criticized the witch hunts, he is linked with the city of Trier of which you briefly spoke in the first video. It is of course difficult to pack centuries of history in a one hour video but I respect your work and effort. I have discovered your channel and follow your work with great joy and interest. LucianCorrvinous Son of Hekaté Well, what other word could’ve been used to describe a wicked character with supernatural powers that also happens to be female?
@ashleywalker1411

@@geoffreyrichards6079 why? Isn't tyrany inherently complicit in the tread of human foot? If you are trying to dominate in herds then you are trying to dominate, just like the tyrants that you relentlessly complain about. If you destroy western Christianity in exchange for Eastern Satanism then HOW EXACTLY are you any different? What would the name be attached to you? Hypocrite?

It was very informative and I enjoyed it - but - I felt it was missing on a lot of witches writers such as Terry Pratchett and Anne Rice - who both dedicated a significant place to witches in their books.

I think Austin Osman Spare really warrants mention because of the impact he had on the "graphic novel" giants, Alan Moore, Grant Morrison, and Neil Gaiman. Also if the subject icludes depiction of witches in art, Spare himself was an artist.

Yes, very good point. He is the godfather of Chaos Magick and knew & had a relationship with a witch. Not to mention his own occult writings and activities. Everyone with any interest whatsoever needs to read Spare's works.

I love this channel, all the content is so well-thought out and presented in an approachable way with a lot of research put behind the work. Brilliant work! I feel like I've learned so much so quickly about the history of witches and the whole progression of it slowly transitioning from being demonized back to being socially acceptable via pop culture, I love learning about this stuff. You have created easily one of the best channels on KZfaq, and always get excited to see your new video essays! :)

Wicked and the following books make less of the presence of Majik in the world it describes than about the choices of the characters. The fact that Elphaba is uncertain of how to effect it, and that we never see Galinda do much with it. Nor Liir actually harness it, puts it in the background. But I havent read the last so maybe Mcquire wraps it all uo. He doest the same with his take on Sleeoping Beauty, Mirror Mirror, where its there but its to be taken at face value, and isn't really directed by the characters but vusited upon them...

As a practitioner of witchcraft, I really appreciate the time, effort and open-mindedness you've made this video with! A sincere thank you, and may your god/s bless you!

I was expecting some insight on the Salem witch trials that happened in 1692 Massachusetts, but we only got a reference. Also I would suggest some pauses here and there to let the audience digest all this information and prepare mentally for what is to follow. It would help make the topic transitions smoother too. I know this might increase the video duration, but I think it's worth it (you could break it down to smaller parts and have more videos too). As usual, great content. Thank you for this.

You are my new favorite youtuber, this level of quality and research is unprecedented for this kind of subject matter, as most I think who've tackled it lack this kind of breadth. I do wish part 1 mentioned Gnostics (since many of them were into magic) and early Christian heretic groups like the Cathars.

I’m not 3/4’s of the way through and I’ve learned more about witches and so many other things than I ever knew about. I only recently learned of Lovecraft when I started to listen to audiobooks. Although I have to admit that I find his style of writing way too hard to get through, the only story I found to my liking was the one about the writer living in a witch’s house. I guess I liked it because it was so different from his other writing. I love to learn about things that turn out to be obviously a huge part of human culture; it makes me realize that although I might think I’m at least picked up a decent amount of knowledge in my 58 years, I really don’t know anything.

This is an absolutely amazing series and I'm so happy I stumbled upon this, thank you so much! I have one tiny note tho: I think it would be really great if you could add sources to the images you show in your videos, either in the videos themselves or as links in a Gdoc or sth. I know this is a pain in the butt to do but it would be fair to the creators of those images and also I've seen a bunch so far that I'd like to look at myself but I have to take a screenshot and google reverse image share. Still, fantastic work and I'm looking forward to watching more great content on your channel! :)
