Denver Crumpler was an AWESOME TENOR, JAKE HESS' VOICE WAS SECOND TO NO ONE! HARMONY EXTRAORDINARY!! THE VOCAL QUALITY "OH LORD I WANT TO GO HEAVEN", WRITTEN BY JAMES "BIG CHIEF" WETHERINGTON was really a plea & prayer to GOD 🙏. NO AUTO-TUNE, NO VOCAL GIMMICKS, NO SOUND ENGINEER EFFECTS, ONLY TRULY GOD GIVEN TALENT 🙏 ON DISPLAY. TO GOD BE THE GLORY!!! PLUS, "MY GOD IS REAL" TRULY GREAT

When they walked on stage...you could feel electricity in the air...they were mesmerizing. THis album is pure gold. Denver is simply fantastic on My God Is Real.

The TWO BEST TENORS IN GOSPEL MUSIC: DENVER CRUMPLER, The Statesmen, & BILL SHAW, The Blackwood Brothers, WERE BOTH TYPE 1 DIABETICS. Unfortunately, Denver died early in his career. Bill Shaw lived to be 94 years old. Both men were used of GOD to BLESS millions. THANK GOD FOR THEM!

The Statesmen were probably the most progressive of the quartets in the 50s. Took quite awhile for some of the others to catch up.

Denver was great with the Rangers and stayed good until he died in 1957. Great tenor!

For those that have commented before about younger Jake Hess: “Oh, that’s Jake with hair.” It’s not. Jake just wore really good toupee’s when he was younger. The photo on this album cover is what Jake looked like with his own hair. For my money, this is the greatest quartet (this personnel) of all time.

Yep. Jake's first piece was carefully crafted - as were many at the time - _not_ to look obvious. (Bing Crosby was another who wore a very subtle piece. Ditto John Wayne) In his autobiography he relays that it was Statesmen radio show sponsor Nabisco who proposed he obtain his store-bought hair. Like many here, I had a deep respect and admiration for Jake.

@Betty Roos The Blackwood Bros started in 1934 & The Statesmen in 1947 literally set the standard for the genre in every way and predated the Cathedrals who started in 1964 by many years. Point-there would have been no Cathedrals without the influence of Hovie Lister & his quartet.

To hear these dear brothers sing and see how they ended there lives in Christ, is rich in nostalgia. 🎚
