For this week, many people who watched my previous videos have asked me to show them something different about Fine WoodCarving. So we decided to make a video about: “A Young Man Has Tried To Carve Kagura Masks To Inherit Tradition With More Than 20 Types of Blades”.
#japanesewoodworking #woodcarving #kaguramask
I have gone to Takachiho Town in Miyazaki prefecture where the main character is working to find out, I've done a few interviews and started writing the script, rewrote the content, a new voice was recorded, new effects work, new music, new footage added and a new creation about Kagura Masks is created.
Born in the house of a Kagura engraver and being the eldest son of the three brothers, He grew up and was aware of his responsibility to continue his father's job. When he was 25, he asked his father to be a disciple and take a step to be a great engraver. If he did not inherit the traditions his household would be in trouble. The Kagura masks have been declared a national traditional handicraft by Miyazaki prefecture.
► Kagura Mask Sculptor: Kudo Shogo (工藤 省悟さん)
Born 1987 in Miyazaki Prefecture
► Teacher (Father): Mr.Kudo Hiroaki (工藤 浩章さん)

Love seeing the younger generation take on their fathers tradition. Given time the son may overtake the father in his abilities. Lovely work son. 👍🏻🇦🇺😁

I have attempted this over the years, and only get so far with the two chisels and tiny blade I have, with no guidance or technique. But now I literally have everything I need by watching this a couple times. Thank you all for spreading this wealth of knowledge. I'll definitly be back to mask making once I get a chunk of wood!

He should use a bench of something to hold the mask while doing the ''heavy'' carving. The force he uses is actually absorbed by his body, making his blows less effective and wasting alot of effort.
@charliebowen5071
@charliebowen5071 3 жыл бұрын
AstralJokers you are completely wrong!! The Japanese do not use benches. The workpiece is braced against the studding of the floor. No force is absorbed by his body. It’s been done this way longer than benches have existed.. benches are a western modern concept....

The part rating on his lap is to test the rigidity or density of the particular piece of timber.
@AstralJokers
@AstralJokers 3 жыл бұрын
@@charliebowen5071 You may try to believe w/e things you want to believe, physics don't care about your beliefs. You can see him clearly sweating and you can see the piece swinging around on his body. It's not braced. The way he's crouched means he's killing his back. I don't care where he is from, his form is bad and he suffers for it. Those are simple facts.

@@AstralJokers Agree with you, the carvers in the philippines, indonesia and malaysia sit on the floor but place the wood on the ground or a small carving rack near the ground. The volume of carving these countries do is much more that that coming out of japan.

No way. The masters is FAR FAR superior. Thats not an opinion. The chin line is crooked on Shogos and the right eye and brow is raised and off center. The masters however is perfectly symmetrical.
@zhenyakc3586

@@TheHeroRobertELee Although good Symmetry makes a face look good, perfect Symmetry makes it look creepy. His style with sharp edges adds more definition and overall appeal. As an artist or a musician, anytime you create something perfect (shape, sound) on a computer, breaking some Symmetry helps create something that is more pleasing to a human being. I take aesthetics over perfection any day. 😎

Not at all well said. We need the regulations to protect and preserve beautifull places. There are a lot of people, who have no respect for such places. They'll leave their garbage there, they destroy things, they'll try to buy and exploit the landscape, take natural resources to make money etc. The world is going downhill so fast that we need more regulations and not less and we need to teach respect for the beauty and fragility of this planet.
