A few things I want to clear up: 1. Please wear eye and hand protection if you try this! I'm really sorry that I did not represent this well. I had watched so many tutorials of people successfully breaking glass that it led me to underestimate the risks. I forgot I was watching pros (hence didn't see mistakes) as well as very rarely seeing their faces since the focal point was on their hands. 2. If I ever apply to be a detective or historian please be kind and strike from the record my very poor explanation of the West Germany mercury glass timeline 🙈 that was rough I'm so sorry.

LOVED this video! I watch DIY videos on youtube all the time and this one was both entertaining and informative. I definitely kept saying to myself "she should be wearing eye protection". I've seen videos where people went in after the initial video creation and added a text streamer to add to it such as "Always wear eye protection"....

This video gives me so much anxiety. I work at a place where we work with glass and mirrors. First off all you have to be really careful with mirrors, when it breaks it is more dangerous than normal glass. Never! manipulate glass without glass gloves, the oils of your hand can make the glass slip of your hands. If you are going to sand it with a dremel you should use running water so it won't heat up and break, and it solve the problem of the dust. Don't seat down if you are working with glass, you don't want glass falling on your thighs. And I repeat it again be really careful with mirrors, I've seen a man who have years off experience cutting glass been cut by broken glass and he almost lost his hand. Another thing, if you are cutting glass make sure is not tempered glass otherwise it will burst into small pieces and you will end with no glass.

Thank you for this. I'm in glass school and I would not suggest glass cutting as a diy.. it should be done outside because of the glass dust. You dont want the dust in the room that you are living and cooking in, it's not good for the health. Definitely not with only socks on. Im sorry wendy

Yeah, i was thinking the same that she would have been better off bringing all this to do outside. Even her spray painting part should have been done outside cuz the kitchen fans will just suck up the spray paint and make it harder for her to clean later on. Grease is annoying enough to clean.

Since the stamp on the mirror said "west germany", which means it wasn't manufactured earlier than 1945, and Wikipedia said mercury was used for mirrors until 1930, there was no way the mirror could've been made with mercury. So no need for the sparkling test ;)

This is fascinating. I will need to watch it a few times. My mom was a landscape artist and among her many other mediums also worked with glass. I remember her scoring and breaking off pieces of beautiful colored glass for mosaics. ❤️ She also taught herself to sew after my dad unexpectedly passed away and her custom made and couture clothing was no longer affordable. You are lovely and so creative. I’m going to enjoy watching your videos.

@lestranged

I think they would be much safer attached to the wall with mirror clips. You have both of them just leaning against the wall at an angle. Since they do not have frames, this puts a lot of stress on the glass, especially the tall one with the arched top because the top is only touching the wall at one point (the middle of the arch). It's very unstable. As a Californian I am always aware of earthquake risk when decorating ( tall bookshelves are always attached to the wall at the top, I don't hang heavy pictures or have any shelves above the head of my bed, etc). Toronto is not as earthquake prone but they have had some.
@clairevanloon2
@clairevanloon2 4 жыл бұрын
The glass can also break just because of the stress that has been put on it. An Earthquake will too, but the stress you can put on glass will make it break as well.

@@withwendy Baumgartner Restoration is highly critiqued for not using the right restoration measures; he either uses old techniques or does some of the steps in a wrong way just because it looks good on camera; I recommend reading on Reddit about him. Just an FYI! Used to binge his videos too, before I found out.

@@didicaveronica Surprised by this assessment as he explains in his publically available videos why he uses particular techniques. Professional art restorers are extremely rare, so the community itself is quite small and insular. Reddit on the other hand is full of anonymous trolls.

I loved this video so much in it's entirety. That being said and on top of all other history classes here in the comment section, as a German I want to add: It is not technically the end of _West_ Germany that marked what ended what needed to be called West Germany. It was the _end of the GDR_ (And "East Germany") as part of the collapse of the Soviet Union. West Germany was regular Germany with its East ripped out of it, fenced in and made another country. Lots of love to this great channel and the comment section :)
