The Wizard of Oz has been restored a number of times but this is the very first 4K HDR edition of the 1939 classic! In honor of the release of this rendition of the film, Collider was invited to Motion Picture Imaging at Warner Bros. to get a behind-the-scenes look at the facility and exactly what it takes to bring The Wizard of Oz to screen with an expanded color platelet and contrast range. We had the opportunity to chat with Bob Bailey, the VP of Operations & Sales at MPI and also colorist Janet Wilson who’s worked on every Wizard of Oz restoration. They were able to show us the difference between the 4K UHD scan and the original Technicolor camera negative, pinpoint certain details that you’ve never seen before in The Wizard of Oz no matter how times you’ve watched the film, walk us through the cold room film vaults, and so much more. You can check it all out for yourself in this video!

The bluray of Jaws has a great feature in how Universal restored the movie, they explain how the scan the film, the process on how they restored the movie, color correction, create a new film print and also they talked about the audio, how they go from a mono/stereo source to a 7.1 surround; is one extra I always find myself revisiting a lot. I hope Collider can do more of this content, is really interesting how they restore films.

Fascinating video. Firstly, I LOVE the restoration process. Secondly, it is Perri Nemiroff, a BIG proponent of streaming and not so much physical media, telling everyone to go buy this disk. Something must have worked - I went ahead and bought it!!!

All those things the gentleman was talking about is why film preservation is so important! Especially for older films on more fragile material, but even digital media (though it doesn't physically degrade) can still be lost forever if all copies of the files were somehow deleted/destroyed.

:47 I'm curious if anyone has ever approached them to restore their own home movies. I'd be curious how they would handle a conversion from a video camera tape (vhs/Hi8) because a lot of the services and converter devices seem to be as cheap and inferior to the what was already admittedly low quality in the first place. There are so many vhs sourced videos I see that are really bad (like pixelated internet video in the 90s bad) and I know they don't have to look THAT bad.

Anyone notice that either Collider or Warner were trying to make it look like the sepia to Technicolor shot of Oz wasn't done with a sepia-painted house set and a sepia-painted body double? Take a look at the blue coloring they applied at 3:22 and 3:49!

Very cool indeed... but... it just feels a bit wrong because it seems like WB is trying to rewrite history here. They did not make The Wizard of Oz, MGM did. WB just acquired the movie. So it feels a bit off. But still, very cool tour!!

But the nerve-killing part of the job: frame-by-frame cleaning up cracks and dirts and damages manually, for months and months. Simple math: 25 frames per sec, multiplied by 1,5-2-3 hours, thats a hell lot of frames to inspect 1-by-1.

Diminishing returns. I’ve seen people argue 35mm film can approach 6K... but based on a lot of 4K scans I’ve seen, I don’t think going any higher is going to add any useful information.

The Camera roles will be scanned Bedfore the digital Special effects join and the Cutter Start his work. I do Not Unverstand how and why the Film get a native filmrole after the Movie was cutted on a digital Computer. I dont know how to say and how do describe it

It all depends on how well a film's assets were preserved. Take Toy Story, for instance. There was only so much they could do to make that film better. Toy Story 2 on the other hand had much better data preservation. A lot of films have 2K digital intermediate files for visual effects (to save on budget expenses and time) but I read that the first two Harry Potter films were the rare exception and did them at 4K quality.
