Synopsis:
What inspired Johann Strauss II to choose the title "On the Beautiful Blue Danube"? Was it the then-planned regulation of the Danube? Or the poems of Karl Beck that contained the phrase? Had Strauss been planning a waltz section with this title for a long time, or did this idea come to him when the Vienna Men's Choral Society reminded him of a promise to compose a dedication work? The "Blue Danube Waltz" is, in any case, apart from a study, the first vocal composition by Strauss. Did he seek advice and assistance from the choir master of the Men's Choral Society, Rudolf Weinwurm, in handling the vocal parts? Many aspects must remain open. What is certain, however, is that the premiere took place on February 15, 1867, conducted by Weinwurm as part of a "Carnival Song Table" of the Vienna Men's Choral Society in the Dianabad Hall, and that this performance, contrary to later comments, received excellent reviews. The instrumental version of the "Blue Danube" was baptized by the composer himself at the "Carnival Revue" on March 10 in the Volksgarten. The first edition for piano was published, rather unusually for the customs of the time, on the day of the premiere. The demand must have been enormous, as the original publisher C. A. Spina alone brought a scarcely more manageable number of editions to the market in a very short time. Reprints abroad, arrangements for all common instruments and their combinations, highly virtuoso paraphrases, and quotations in works by other composers as well as by Strauss himself testify to the tremendous popularity of the "Danube Waltz." The "Pope of Critics" Eduard Hanslick also attested to the work "a very strange significance [...] the significance of a quotation, a slogan for everything beautiful, loving, and funny in Vienna. [...] Next to the national anthem by Father Haydn, which celebrates the emperor and the imperial house, we have in Strauss's 'Beautiful Blue Danube' another national anthem that sings of our country and people."
