Disaster strikes! Is this the end of the series? Here is the (maybe) final video of the step-by-step upgrade video series for the WLToys A949/A959/A969/A979 (and B-versions).
Full metal drive line, metal gears and ball bearings and the first tests and measurements completed ... well, not exactly the great finale as I had hoped for. This one sure did test my patience. Watch the video and find out what went wrong ... and what went right.

Thank you so much for the nice feedback, Caleb Reeve. Yeah, I buy most of my products (Tamiya, Traxxas, Arrma, Kyosho) myself, and I always try to include every experience I have with a certain product, good or bad. Nice, you got an A959-B on the way. I have had three different B.versions and never had a problem with gears or electronics. Sometimes it happens though, like with this A959. Thannks again for the encouragement, buddy. Much appreciated.

The little piece that goes over the bearing on the driveshaft, by the reduction gear. You have it backwards, and its causing binding on the gear cover. I did exactly the same thing the first time I put the A979 back together. Flip it around, it should help your issue. Thats why everything is getting hot, because of the extra resistance.
@NordicRC
@NordicRC 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, thought about that, so in the last run outside in the video it was flipped around. Didn’t really solve the issue. But maybe the motor was fried in the first test run 🙂 Checked the little cover and the resistance. I don’t see it providing that much resistance if placed opposite, but I’m not sure. Will have to check again. But thanks a lot for the input, bro. Appreciate it.

Hi Mark! Yeah, wish it had happened before the new drive line had been installed, so I had the thought it was the motor before I thought it was the drive line. Can’t really be the drive line since it later had those long periods of perfect running with a cool motor and ESC. So have to be the motor or/and the ESC. Well, thanks, Mark! I’m beginning to feel like finishing the upgrade project with all the nice words. If I do, I think I will do it a little more ‘up-tempo’ with less editing and less write-ups. I think that could suit the ‘owners’ as well as the ‘non-owners’ and especially me, he he 🙂 Though I love editing I would also love a little more run-time before the fall kicks in.

Didn’t really sort it out. It’s still unreliable. Switches between perfect and then some kind of obstruction of the motor where it just creates heat (battery, wire, ESC). So I think if I decide to go on with this one it just needs complete new electronics. Could be fun. It’s definitly ready for more powerful motors with this metal drive line. Yeah, I was surprised with this one also. Think it must be a coincidence with the electronics going down at the same time of the upgrades. Upgrades, I found, work fine. Hello from Spain. It is hard to me to explain the things in english, but i will try to do my best. I have a 969 A, from a couple of years, and I realized that is not the B version when I recieved the metal gears (the bar, pinion, full metal, you know). The mistake came when I saw a video, not from your channel, that explained the differences between A and B, and I saw that A version did not have a heat dissipator (that piece, like a solid radiator), and finally I got wrong, in fact, the motor is VERY DIFFERENT, and I didn't notice that. The thing is that I have 2 identical models, and after a lot of test, I decided that some upgrades are, in fact, worst that stock car. I have new suspension: good thing. I putt new ball bearings: ok I changed some 'arms' near of the wheels, after a crash, and... It goes well. The stock old differentials in plastic were very... Breakable... I mean... Very poor lasting... I have at least four or five of that old differentials... And they started to break after upgrading the suspension. It is caused by a phisical effect... Maybe you understand that... The sizes of the new suspension are not exactly the same... But... The most important thing that i have done to one of my car is try to change full metal transmission, and after 4 or five tests, i have downgraded the car with standard bar (plastic bar), plastic pinions and gear and the only new thing is metal differentials. Full metal. This downgrade is because of the troubles of heating, the motor and the battery almost burn with that full metal. I tried everithing, like you in this video... With the hand it goes ok, but with the motor... Is like the metal friction with metal make it to run harder just in some moments. With my new configuration, the car goes almost ok. 9/10. My other car, with only new suspension, new standard (all plastic) differentials and with full ball bearing works much better than the other one. Runs a little faster and make less noise. My conclusion is... Sometimes we have to stop when the upgrades are not neccesary better things. I ordered led ligths, and some metal wheel nuts and new aluminium dogbones. It will be the Last upgrade... (or not... Hahaha). Thanks by your videos my friend.
@NordicRC

Thanks for the interesting comment! Yeah, upgrading doesn’t necessarily mean a better car a lot of the times. And yes, upgrades can end up costing a lot. But upgrading for the fun of upgrading and the project itself can be super fun too 🙂 Thanks for the input about the gears and metal friction. You might be right!

Thanks, Derek! great you're watching, thanks, buddy. I have the same problem. I think my skills/knowledge when it comes to electronics is limited to 1) replace bearings/brushes in modified motors 2) solder wires/plugs that has come off completely 3) throw out and replace. So I think my only option here is nr. 3 :-) Yeah, love the little barn. Such a good option to have sometimes :-) Would like to decorate it a bit more, and get better lighting for videos over there (well, either that or another camera better suited for indoor shots) Maybe this winter :-)

@@NordicRC ha ha, I only use option 3. I think your barn will get a lot of RC action when winter arrives. I have an idea for a 1 or 2 meter square area in a corner of it before you decorate. Some earth, logs, rocks and stones for a temporary 1/24 crawler course. This could be assembled easily and cleared away when you're finished with it. Wish I lived nearby. I would make it for you.

@@NordicRC Unfortunately there's no RC for me for a few weeks. I had an accident while opening a box with a knife this morning. I've sliced right along the length of my throttle finger. Because of my blood thinning tablets it bled quite a bit which was a frightening. We thought I would have to go to hospital for stitches, but although the cut is 3 inches long it's only about 3mm at the deepest. Angie rushed to the chemist and bought some special plaster strips which hold the skin together along the length of the cut. This stopped the bleeding, and she also got a metal splint so I don't bend my finger and open it up again. So my throttle finger is out of action for a while ! Luckily I have made quite a few videos recently when the weather's been nice, so I can keep my channel going for a while. But I may struggle with working on cars until its healed. I'm just glad it's not my right hand because that would make life really difficult ! Photo postimg.cc/KRqvhrV1

Auch, bad bad luck my friend! You have certainly seen your fair share of blood/heart problems for this year. But good thing it was only a knife and blood this time. Have the same setup, brushless 2440 (my 2nd one) and a 45A esc. Lots of motor cogging and it wasn't even on long runs, just short burst. Trace it down to the gear casing. When it's tightened down, it pushes the center shaft and pinions too tightly. Needs to be dremelled in certain areas to loosen the teeth bite on the diff gears. And also add wheel bearings, it'll reduce load significantly.
@NordicRC
@NordicRC 4 жыл бұрын
Nice combo you got in yours :-) Yeah, that's what I thought, something with the new gears, so I did some testing, even with the gear boxes on (as shown in the vid). It do tighten it up a little, but not by much, from what I could feel anyway. And as shown in the video it actually spins and runs fine (sometimes). So it can't really be the gear boxes in this case, cuz' it changes. It got wheel bearings. You can see all the upgrades in the previous episodes. Thanks a lot for watching, bro.

Hi Pete! Uhh, yeah, put my patience to a test. Easier if it just had burned out, then I just could have replaced it immediately. its an ESC cooling problem coupled with a low C rated battery. 1. add some cooling fins / copper wire to ESC mosfets to help dissipate heat. Adding all that metal and weight is working everything harder. 2. With the added weight the motor is wanting more power draw than the crap stock battery can provide. This is why everything is also getting hot. Switch to a 2s 45c or greater battery. Problems solved. That's my 2 cents.

the esc's on these things are junk. Literally 5 minutes after i ran mine for the first time it cut off completely. i thought it was a dead battery so i brought it inside and used the multimeter to discover the battery was still at like 7.2v.. and i also discovered the esc was putting out zero power to the motor. Then after 3 days of all sorts of other issues i finally completely dismantled the esc. removed all plastic, removed all epoxy so it was just the board. I scrubbed everything down with alcohol and made sure every single connection on the board was good.. Since then ive had no issues at all (knock on wood). But after a LOT of research i discovered that a LOT of people are having issues with the esc in one way or another. They are very cheap esc's that go bad very quickly. Now every time i run my car im worried that its gonna fail completely and be dead for good. Thank God i have all new electronics for it. I just need to get to that point in my upgrade process so i can install them.

@@NordicRC yeah, somehow my 979b did misbehaved few times, and i think the main problem comes out from the esc (just random guess). Yeah, metal can definitely do some stabilization. But it weighs a lot too and slows the vehicle down or puts your electronics under stress. It can also be a problem in crashes. Bends ... or creates weak spots in surrounding plastic parts. But I do love upgrading to metal anyway ☺️

With a magnifying glass i could see a small scratch on the big drive line gear so I ordered a new one and paid express shipping and got it in just under 6 months. I put the gear on and it drove fine for 2 outings then back to the half power clackity clack drivetrain. Ive taken it apart several times and cant find anything wrong so it will sit on the shelf cause i dont even know what to fix. If problems continue, if I switch the lectronics, I might have to send this one off my house too :-) Yeah, love our little barn. Completely refurbished with new windows, concrete floor etc. I will definitely try to set up a track and maybe some better lighting for videos this winter. @NordicRC

Hi! It’s defintely a good idea to check the hex adapters, wheels, wheel axles, drive shafts, drive cups ... just start with the wheels and work yourself inwards to find the problem. 3:51 the ESC light is off. broken switch, not really surprising me. Either cut the switch and solder the leads together (always did this on all my rcs) or change it with some rocker switch. I realize you got them free but for most people...it is crazy to invest 100.00 dollars in a car that costs less than 70.00. Better to improve what you have so I agree with the metal gears and bearings but that is about it other than a better battery. Metal gears 15.00, battery 15.00, bearings 15.00 so for 45.00 more you get a great car. total investment 114.00. NOT 190.00.

I think you confuse 'throttle trim' to 'throttle Dual Rate ( DR)' or 'Throttle End Point Adjustment (EPA)'? The only A959 I have seen that comes with a transmitter with DR is the A959-A. The standard A959 and the A959-B comes with 'Throttle Trim'. Thottle trim doesn't change the speed. It allows you to set the neutral point, the perfect spot between reverse and forward (just like the steering trim allows you to set the neutral spot between right and left). I have never used the Throttle Trim on the A959-A, A959 or A959-B. The neutral spot is set from factory.

A979(a) went to 12 mm hex hubs and rally tires narrower and 1/8" taller than the MT tires (ball bearings for the hubs of course!), works really well. also did the quick heat-n-stretch to the stock steering tie rods, just turn the wheel all the way with a little tension pulling, run a lighter an inch under it moving quickly a few seconds, keep tension on it and make sure it stays straight. do both sides so the front wheels are straight.
