WM Heil PODs of Oceanside

Something made me think it was high time to revisit Waste Management in Oceanside where a fleet of FWD trucks and Heil POD interchangeable bodies once collected the city's trash. This was filmed shortly after WM's 2010 contract renewal, but still before they automated everything. Not sure how many of these drivers are still with WM, I'm told one of them actually works at a taco shop now lol enjoy~

That first driver is such a badass. If i'm not mistaken, isn't he the guy in lots of other POD videos, like Bryn's? I always find myself coming back to this video for how nostalgic it, since I grew up watching Bill's old videos of the pods. Even though this footage is roughly 10 years old it still resonates with me. All around solid work

Wow, this was amazing haha. Really wish I got to spend more time with the PODs, happy I got to see at least one but would have been great to see them going full force in the city. First driver sure knows how to move! I love how he revved on the arm cycles, sure seemed experienced with the truck. The commercial one was fun too. Happen to know if they used them on commercial prior to the contract renewal? I still remember I was quite shocked the first time you guys saw a POD on commercial and thought it was a new thing they were doing, but may have been done that way forever and just never made its way onto KZfaq until the more recent years. Thanks for posting this, made my day going back in time and seeing these little machines!

you're welcome, glad to bring you back in time for a bit. they sure did use the trucks on commercial before contract renewal... at least West of the 5 because I would see them doing plastic dumpsters near the beach and that's about where we found commercial PODs each time. I can't confirm the rest of the city's commercial was, but all trash routes would make sense since that was their way of transporting to the landfill at the time.

Any ideas what engine hides under the cab? Almost sounds like an ISC Cummins, but those trucks are too old

Awesome video. These Heil POD are really awesome, do you know if there are any POD still left in America. I know that there’s still one city near me in Germany that uses the newer and bigger versions of the Heil POD but with Mercedes as the chassis and the swing arm, that was used to collect the diamondbacks.

thank you, only a couple of the old bodies rusting away in junkyards in some states. somebody ought to film the German ones if they're also starting to become rare there

Trashman242 sad to hear they’re only history in the US. I only know one city that uses these, because I think they have a patent for it. They still have a fleet of these, but only the bigger and newer versions. I don’t think these small ones are still running, I heard they where retired a few years ago. Maybe they still have a few as spares but other than that, you can only find the bigger ones here in Germany. Sad to see them disappear, there System of collecting was unique. There are I think two videos of the newer versions on KZfaq, I would like to film or even see them myself but the city is a little bit too far away.
