The Drum Master- Drumming has the power to unite people, no matter how varied their language or cultural background might be. On a trek through Africa, Neil Peart had a singular experience that proved just that. "I was in Gambia, walking through a small village, and I heard the sound of a drum. So of course I was curious! I looked into a compound and I could hear the drumming coming from a curtained room. I walked up to a woman doing laundry in front of the room. She could see my interest in the sound, so she waved me to go in. Inside I found a young, white missionary from a nearby Catholic school. Sitting across from him was the commanding presence of the local drum master. He was attempting to show the missionary how to play any kind of beat. The missionary was trying as hard as he could, but he wasn't having a lot of success." After a time the drum master, frustrated by the missionary's lack of ability, noticed the other man who had come into the room. The master had no idea who this person was, but he thought to himself, "Why not see if he can play?" According to Peart, what happened next was fascinating. "The drum master gestured to me to try and play a rhythm. So we began playing together, and he started smiling because he could tell I had a rhythm - maybe not his rhythm, but a rhythm of some kind. We were playing and playing, building the intensity, and little kids started coming in, laughing at the white man playing drums. Then a few women came into the room, and everybody began dancing to our beat! The master and I even started trading fours. It wasn't a spoken thing, but he could tell that I would lay out and listen to what he was doing for a certain amount of time, and then he would do the same. It was just a magical moment." When they finished, a confused and startled missionary ran up to Peart and asked, "How can you do that?" Chuckling to himself, Neil politely responded, "I'm in the business."

He was indeed great, but by no means self taught. Neil himself talks about his first drum teacher in his books and interviews and even went to study with a master teacher in the time between the recording of the Counterparts and Test for Echo albums in the 90s. He was always trying to get better and more musical. A true student with a passion for seeking mastery.

Neil pearl is one of my favorite drummers of all time, but little known fact he also writes the lyrics to almost all of rush`s songs. My favorite musical line ever "one likes to believe in the freedom of music, but glittering prizes and endless compromises shatter the illusion of integrity." He plays with real freedom and writes like a true poet philosopher. R.I.P Neil Peart you will always be my hero and inspiration ❤

**STORY TIME** This happened in the city of Los Angeles. My friend was raised in his father's music shop. As a result he was proficient in the piano, lead guitar, bass guitar, and saxophone (and the flute, but he won't admit it). He also spent a lot of time at musical instrument trade shows and trade fairs. At one such event, he came across a full stage setup, just waiting to be played. Someone had picked up the bass guitar, and was having fun jamming. My friend picked up the lead guitar, followed the bassist's lead, and they jammed for a few minutes. Eventually, a drummer sat down and started to play behind them. They had a blast. Just riffing off one another for a good 10 minutes, then they started inviting each other to do a solo. My buddy killed it, the crowd had shown up right when he started, it was perfect. Lots of smiles, lots of applause. At some point, the bassist and my friend step back and look at the drummer. He starts his solo. My buddy forgets to keep playing, just slack-jawed staring at this guy. He's just dominating this random drum set-up, designed to be a showcase. Everyone cheers. My Friend: "Wow man. You're pretty good. You should totally be in a band, man" Drummer: "Hey thanks! That's really nice of you." My Friend: "No seriously!" Drummer: "Hey, thanks again. But, I actually am in a band." My Friend: "No shit?! Anyone I might have heard of?" Drummer: "Dunno, you ever heard of "Rush"? Moral of the story: my friend told Neil Peart that he was "pretty good" and should "totally be in a band." No. We will never let him forget it.

Beautiful story! I have one myself, although it's not the same, it's somewhat interesting, nonetheless. I grew up in Long Beach, California. And I attended many shows at Long Beach Arena, and one of them was Iron Maiden. Yeah, the one they taped live. Yeah, I know, the place held almost 15,000 people, and about 100,000 said they were there. Like Woodstock, like the US Festival (I was there, too) I get it. But _was_ there. Anyway, a few years later, I found myself in South Florida, near Ft. Lauderdale; Coral Springs was the place I lived at the time of this story. I couch surfed at my girlfriend's parent's condo. Her parents were awesome people. Her brother was the drummer for a local rock band, a band that got signed to Atlantic, but fizzled out an album later. And that seemingly uninteresting part of the story is the part that matters because of what I'm about to tell you below these words. So, one early morning, after a long night of getting hammered because I found out my mother had died a day earlier, I hear a knock at the door. And of course, being hungover, I ignored it at first... until it got louder. So, I dragged my soiled carcass off the couch, staggered over to the door, opened it, and there stood a short dude with long hair and a British accent, and he asked, "Yes, I'm sorry it's so early, but is [REDACTED] up yet?" Now, my brain was _beyond_ fuzzy at that time; I could barely make this guy out, but I picked up on his accent. So, I said to him, "Um, maybe, let me check... come on in and chill on the couch." Of course, I had to tidy it up a bit, as there were sheets there. I then went over to [REDACTED]'s door and knocked and said, "Hey dude, someone is here for you!" I barely heard a sound after I did that, so I knocked harder. And that's when the door opened, and [REDACTED] stuck his head out and told me to tell his friend to wait and that he had to get into the shower. So, I walked back over and told this guy what I was told and headed for the kitchen to make a pot of coffee. I then asked this dude, "Hey, do you want a cup of coffee?" and he said, "Oh, no, I'm fine mate. I had some tea earlier before arriving here." Again, I was still in a heavy fog from getting hammered the night before, and never once thought of asking this guy who his name was. So, as I made the coffee, I asked this guy, "So, do you play in a band? Is that how you know [REDACTED]?" and his response was, "Yeah, sure... have you ever heard of a little band called 'Iron Maiden'?" And, STILL not getting it, I said, "Uh, yeah, they're only one of my favorite bands! I was _at_ Long Beach when they recorded 'Live After Death'!?" And that's when this dude said, "Well then, my name is Nicko... maybe you've heard of me?" I immediately dropped what I was doing and looked over, and it dawned on me that yes, I was a hungover fool, and Nicko McBrain was sitting in the same fifty feet as me at the same time. I then said, "Dude! I'm SO SORRY! I can't believe I didn't recognize you! What in the fu(k are you doing here?!" and his reply was, "I'm going golfing with [REDACTED], that's why I'm here." I don't know what screwed my head up more: the fact that I didn't recognize Nicko McBrain or THAT HE GOLFED! At that time, I was only 21 years old. I didn't understand how life worked. I couldn't wrap my head around the fact that a heavy metal musician would want to golf. Yeah, that was before Alice Cooper said he liked to golf, so, YEAH! Anyway, Nicko was a cool dude. He autographed my Number of the Beast T-shirt, that I would eventually lose in a drunken stupor while visiting New Orleans... but that's another story altogether.

That is a Mallet KAT (sometimes called a MIDI marimba). It’s a MIDI keyboard for percussionists. It’s laid out like a xylophone/vibraphone/glockenspiel/marimba (all essentially the same, just different tonal qualities). He can use it to trigger any synthesized or sampled sound he wants. He also has trigger pads and pedals placed strategically throughout the kit. He uses them to trigger the brass stabs and the final big-band sequence at the end.
@jameskirschling7887

Thanks for sharing that. Is that how he got the thunder sound? Or did he have something to synthesize his kick drum?
@Bass17yl
@Bass17yl 3 жыл бұрын
James Kirschling, it’s either the KAT or one of the other triggers he has spread around his kit. Besides his full Roland V-Drum back kit, he’s got two or three trigger pads and a couple of trigger pedals. He’s insanely busy during a song. He even triggers synth sounds in some songs. The pre-chorus organ hits in Roll The Bones are triggered by Neil live.

i don't think most people realize the type of physical and mental conditioning that is required for professional musicians. They are playing shows almost every night on tour, sleeping on buses and in hotels, and they have to bring fresh new energy for 2 hours every night (sometimes 3 hours if they have a large song catalog), after hours of rehearsals... drumming, strumming, singing, shouting, dancing, jumping, running, screaming... all while capturing the mood of each and every song in the session whether its a happy song, a sad song, a deep thought song, etc. [Out of shape artists do 1 hour sessions and end up with short careers]. Real musicians are athletes.

One of my favorite Neil Peart quotes was when asked what it was like to drum for Rush and said. "It's like running a marathon while doing complex arithmetic at the same time."

Neil was an incredible drummer and very humble. He never stopped taking lessons. He was referred to as "The Professor" because he also wrote most of the songs. He went through some very difficult times before losing his life just recently to brain cancer. If you have the time and like to read, I highly recommend his books - One of which tells of the heartbreak he suffers before he finally hops on his bike, (motor at that time), and heads north from his home in Canada. In late fall/early winter.

It wasn't just his skill as a drummer, but as musician and lyricist. Rush is probably the BEST band over all top to bottom. And how long they stayed together, a true team effort. No egos. I mean, I love a lot of other bands......but when you look at top to bottom, how all their songs just blended together, and the lyrics..it all flowed into one single piece.

Thank you Mr. Video for reviewing Neil Peart's solo. I saw him perform with Rush a few years ago and he is a drummer like no other. Now that you reviewed Neil (RIP), you must go on a Rush review medley: Subdivisions, Early Distant Warning, Mission, Camera Eye, Turn the Page, Big Money, Ghost of a Chance, Manhattan Project, Bravado, Spirit of radio, Show dont tell, and so many more. He wrote many of Rush's lyrics. I've had many favorite great drummers like Jeff Porcaro from Toto, Stewart Copeland from The Police, Steve Smith from Journey and Bob Siebenberg from Supertramp, but no one compares to the GOAT Neil Peart. Brother your reactions have me rolling. You are the best! I walked by Neil 6 years ago and my face just swoll up from his backhand...lol🤣

Being one of Those Concert addicts, Rush was always on My Itinerary when they would come around My neck of the woods. I loved them so much especially Live, that When My Son was old enough to drag him along with Me to the shows, these Fellas were always My Favorite to be able Share with Him. Memories created that will Forever be Imbedded & relived in Our Hearts and Minds with every song. Saddened I will never see them Live again, but Blessed that I can Honestly say that countless times I/We had. Rest In Peace Professor

Simply an amazing drummer and lyricist. Really digging the way he could just wear out the drums and then seamlessly drop to a slower tempo. Also, I get tired just watching this drum solo, but he did this on top of a full concert! Dude had strength and stamina to spare!!!!!
