Often wonder what it was like for the enslaved people leaving through the door of no return on the gold coast of Africa, as Ghana was once called by the colonizers. Some how our people managed to hold on to their cultures by even the very foods that we consumed, look at the strength of our brothers and sisters we are forever intertwined with the motherland particularly Ghana. Wodemaya please visit Marcus Mosiah Garvey birthplace, you're his twin. Welcome to the land of wood and water.

It is only poisonous when it is forced opened. When left to open naturally, it is safe to eat. Roasted breadfruit would have been a good pairing for the ackee and saltfish. My 16 year old Canadian son ate ackee and saltfish for the first time on Sunday. He enjoyed it. Here in Canada, we buy ackee in the tin. Enjoy your stay! ❤😊🇯🇲

Maya, you seem skeptical about eating ackee but as it was explained to you, as long as the fruit opens on its own on the tree it's perfectly safe to eat. It's a very versatile food too that can be paired with corned pork or just by itself nicely seasoned with onions, black pepper and tomatoes. I'm not sure why you would taste any bitterness in it as it's not bitter at all.

There are many foods that people eat everyday which can be ‘poisonous’ but they aren’t aware of it! Cassava, for instance can be poisonous - its leaves and roots can produce deadly cyanide. To prevent poisoning, cassava must be properly cooked before canning, eating or serving. However, Jamaicans have been eating Ackee since the 1700s and they know how to prepare it. As long as it’s prepared correctly it is not anymore poisonous than other foods!
