And what a evening line that was on BBC 1. Not one mind numbing realty show in sight. Brilliant oh those were the days

Terry Wogan started off his radio career in Ireland on what was known as "Radio Eireann" which in 1966 was renamed RTE Radio. Ireland had just one national radio station, and with a limited schedule of around 7.30am - Midnight per day, being a presenter on it was a top job to have, and Terry knew it.

Sir Terry Wogan came from old Radio Eireann, later renamed RTE Radio. He got a reprimand by RTE Radio when he worked there before he joined the BBC. Back before 1969, RTE Radio hours were very restricted, just 8.00am-3.00pm and 5.00pm-11.45pm, and at the 3.00pm closedown Sir Terry told Irish listeners that if they wanted afternoon entertainment BBC Radio was on the air, which caused a lot of consternation at RTE and he got a severe reprimand.

Do I sense a little bit of tension between Blackburn and Wogan here? Seems the two men did not get on.

Terry was used to hearing BBC Radio, as unlike television signals, radio signals were far more receivable across all of Ireland, and so BBC Radio was received as far south as Cork City and far west as Limerick (where Terry was from) and so BBC had a huge influence on Terry.

Amazing line up of radio talent. You wouldn't get that now. Was much better in those days. People seemed to enjoy their shows, rather than pretend to enjoy their shows.

Well think back to 1987 and the BBC had very little competition. Since 1973 there was Independent Local Radio, but they never made an impact to the BBC. However now in 2022, the BBC Radio services are dying on the vine, an exodus of presenters leaving the BBC, and the one who is benefiting is Global, the largest commercial radio station owner in Britain, who have poached so many BBC presenters in the last 5 years. Also, Heart Radio, Classic FM, Smooth Radio, LBC, XFM and Capital owned by Global are now beating the BBC in the listening figures.

On mine it's loud and my volume is just before the halfway point. If you listen and watch the internet on a phone then that might be the problem! I never use phones.

BBC Radio 1 was always hampered from the very start in 1967 by the pathetic "needle time" restrictions imposed on it by the music unions. The needle time limit per day strangled the station.

I'm presuming this was only available in stereo on BBC Radio 1 FM in the London area? R1 on FM didn't go nationwide until September 1988. This was September 1987.

Yes around 35% could receive stereo Radio 1 in 1987, by 1988 that increased to 65%.

Interestiing stuff! Too short, in Wogan's typically facile way. There's not much about the world in 1967 - or the years in between, come to that! Ed Stewpot's in good form, John Peel & Tony Blackburn too. There is a noticeably strong undercurrent of rivalry/jealousy, albeit seemingly good-natured. At the end, Pete Murray says: 'Rubbish!' With hindsight about the behaviour of certain notorious characters at the BBC, you do wonder what really went on behind the scenes. (No sign of Noel Edmonds or Jimmy Savile, either.)

Apart from the obvious sex scandals, now including Tony Blackburn I still say that this was the time when Radio One was actually good to listen, I mean when they played decent music,...not like it is today, it's completely unrecognisable. I'm aware that it has to appeal to todays audience but I don't have to like it and I certainly don't listen to it anymore !

Made yourself look a dick there didn't you.... Tony Blackburn was not accused of any offences and is back on the BBC. Unless you have a portfolio of evidence you can show us....

Unless you are under 30 it quite rightly should be unrecognisable to you. It would be doing something wrong if it still sounded the same as it did in the 70s and 80s

For the record Tony Blackburn was dismissed from the BBC for a supposed discrepancy between the evidence he gave to Dame Janet Smith and an interview with Bill Cotton in the early 70s over an alleged incident. He was subsequently reinstated by the Beeb with no case to answer so mention of his name in connection with sex scandals is both inaccurate and unfair.
