A quote from Warner Brothers: "The cartoons you are about to see are products of their time. They may depict some of the ethnic and racial prejudices that were commonplace in American society. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. While the following does not represent Warner Bros. view of today's society, these cartoons are being presented as they were originally created, *because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed."*

When WB rereleased some older Looney Tunes on DVD, they included a disclaimer that acknowledged that these cartoons were extremely racist, but they left them unaltered because "censoring them would be the same as pretending that bigotry isn't real." That's some real self-awareness, right there.

Releasing an animal that was raised entirely in captivity into the wild without proper rehabilitation program is actually a very stupid and cruel move, since that animal has no clue about where to look for food, what to avoid, in case of elephants, a highly social species, it has no idea how to communicate or behave with its entirely wild counterparts etc. A REAL smart move would be to put Dumbo and his mom in a sanctuary (or a zoo as a last resort), like it's done with retired circus animals nowdays.

I don't know if its still around, but there used to be a place like this for apes and the like here in the UK. It was a park that would rescue monkeys etc taken as pets, ones wounded, ones freed from testing facilities/poachers, and bring them into an environment where their ultimate goal was rehabilitation. Get them socialised with other members of the species, get them their medical care, get them back out. Of course, some where never released for a variety of different reasons, but the organisation was genuinely ethical and alleviated a lot of suffering *whilst* still serving as entertainment and education for the public

Wildlife conservationist here that has had experience with captive animals (even if my current job is actually me reading sound data for whales in the Ocean, but that’s another story)... You are correct. And it should also be noted that the message that “no Wild animal belongs in captivity” is a bad message too. There are dozens, maybe hundreds, of notable endangered animals that have been saved from extinction due to captive breeding programs. There are some select few animals I think don’t belong in captivity, namely great apes (due to their social nature and intelligence, but I can let that slide since great apes are doing terribly in the wild) and cetaceans (with exceptions like Bottlenose dolphins), but my point still stands.

I'd also like to add the story of a couple who took a chimpanzee in and raised it like a human. If I could remember, that chimpanzee was eventually dropped to a rehab when she started being too aggressive for the household, and that chimp, once thrown in with a bunch of other horny monkeys, was terrified, distressed and confused by this sudden arrangement and has developed depression and existential crisis, because now she's forced to act like something she never thought she was. Thankfully she eventually coped with it, but literally just after two years, she died. They speculated that it was either poaching or homicide from another chimp, and it's honestly not far to imagine because chimpanzees are very aggressive, even to each other, and even if she's been socialising for two years, she was so inexperienced to save her own life that she really couldn't. And even if it was indeed a poacher, she was most likely shot because she's never encountered this problem.

And the best part is that in original Mulan, she had flaws when training but she was able to overcome them with perceverance. But on the Mulan Remake, she was a robotic impossibly perfect human being that were better than everyone else from the start and easily overcoming any flaws of obstacles that she had. That's not a figure that little girls can mirror themselves in, it just feels like an impossible character that we can't inspire ourselves because they are already perfect. Now take spiderman as an example, probably the most famous superhero, he has flaws, struggles with his low paying job, and has his own problems that he manages to overcome, with hardships but he does it, that's a character that little boys AND girls can mirror themselves in, he becomes stronger learning from his mistakes, he's not an ultra perfect princess that nails everything from the beggining to show how GIRLS (and that's important, because little boys also liked watchin Mulan back then) and only girls are stronger than anyone else. Disney movies before could be watched by anyone and still be enjoyed, but nowadays is like having a lecture from an angry parent.

Sexuality isn't the only thing a woman can use but part of being strong and intelligent is knowing what tricks are in your arsenal and when and how to use them to your advantage. The old Jasmine didn't have a guard she could rouse into disobedience to Jafar like the new one did. Unlike the new Jasmine, she tried to use herself to fight the battle instead of calling on a guard (with a speech about loyalty, etc.) to do it for her. So, with this in mind, which one is the superior Jasmine? Which one is more brave? Which one is more proactive? Which one is more resourceful? Which one is stronger? Which is more admirable? Naomi Scott is an OK actress, but I hated what they did with Jasmine's character in the remake. 1) In the original, she wanted to marry out of love and not because of the law. This brought about a side we can sympathize with, while giving the story romance. In the remake, they gave her Jafar's role. She wants to be Sultan because she thinks she can do a better job than the current Sultan. 2) Her song. Jasmine is throwing aside guards, ripping down tapestries, all while saying how she won't be silenced. What does she do the next moment? Basically roll over and beg. This basically crushes the whole "feminine empowerment" flat. How cool would it have been if she had snatched one of the guards' sword and fought her way back to the throne room?

@@TheSongwritingCat Is "girl boss paint" any different from "princess paint"? I agree with what you're saying to an extent. But we know the "princess paint" worked at reinforcing those gender stereotypes and images of patriarchal ideas of "femininity". These are broad strokes not nuanced detail. If we want that has Disney ever been the place to go? So the question is does shifting to "girl boss paint" ultimately help in where we want to go in addressing these systemic issues? I often wonder whether we get dragged into the "girl boss" is bad. Because that's what that Patriarchal mindset wants us to. While ironically calling for some nuanced complex character that communicates feminist ideas. But if Disney is propaganda (historically and now) then this is what you get. Simple, clear and two dimensional characters that appeal to children. "Girl boss" isn't bad. I do fear how Ellis is using the term woke. And while maybe in honest faith it's a voice among many who aren't. Who have a very "unwoke" agenda. The fact that they keep TELLING that message reveals that they don't actually believe it. A truly empowering movie would start with the unsaid assumption that strong female characters commonly exist, and never waste a second trying to prove it. This is why we get so many boring female characters, whose only role it to be an "inspiration to all the girls out there". How about some interesting characters of all genders with meaningful human flaws? Just imagine the case where you keep telling your daughter "you are NOT less capable than any of the boys!" Probably it didn't even cross her mind in the first place, but now you put that idea in her head. It's like when out of the blue someone tells you that you are most definitely NOT in danger. Now you are suddenly afraid. Similarly, the term "girl power" immediately reveals that it is not actual power, otherwise it would be just called "power".

It's almost as if sexism is supposed to be solved by having women/girls feel confident and not, y'know, by making radical systemic and cultural changes that enables this sexism in the first place

What annoys me about modern movies as a young filmmaker myself is the way women are written in general. They either are totally weak and cry all the time, or they are written in a way to be badass, don‘t show any emotions and are naturally gifted. Like,…. we women are humans. We make mistakes and we have to grow too. Why can‘t movies portrait girls in a way where they aren‘t perfect but develope overtime? Like a normal human being?

Take Mulan as an example... The best part is that in original Mulan, she had flaws when training but she was able to overcome them with perceverance and commitment. Now take spiderman as an example, probably the most famous superhero, he has many flaws, struggles with his low paying job, it's still trying to figure out life and who he is, and has his own problems that he fights to overcome, with many hardships but he eventually does it, that's a character that little boys AND girls can mirror themselves in, he becomes stronger learning from his mistakes, he's not an ultra perfect princess that nails everything from the beggining to show how GIRLS (and that's important, because little boys also liked watching Mulan back then) and only girls are stronger than anyone else. Disney movies before could be watched by anyone and still be enjoyed, but nowadays is like having a lecture from an angry parent.

What makes the new "Mulan" even worse is that the young female character that IS somewhat relatable (since she doesn't have magical superpowers) is her little sister... who ends up becoming the good, traditional wife. So, the movie essentially tells people: "As a woman, you can be anything you want! If you have magic, that is. Otherwise, you better stay at home, get married and be a housewife. Because that's the role of regular women, and they should be happy that they can do that!" I actually don't object to the fact that a female-empowerment-movie also has the message that being a mother and housewife can be fullfilling and something some women might want. So, the bad thing isn't, that Mulan's sister is happy with that role in her life. The problem is, that in combination with how they show Mulan herself, her sister becomes the only other young female character who is looking for her place in that society. And if you show Mulan as being an equal to men ONLY BECAUSE she has these magical superpowers, and show the "regular" girl being happy with her traditional role, the message of the movie gets significantly worse.

This is the result of a false state of utopia common in today's social sphere. The issues of the past have been corrected and now everyone lives in a more progressive future. Racism? Equality. Misogony? Empowerment. Oppressed? Rights. Everything once bad has been corrected, so, there's no need to even think about it! Bad practises, bad traditions, bad people no longer exist! We don't even have to "feel" bad, and if anything makes anyone feel bad, then get rid of it! The world is more perfect than ever before so why would anyone need to struggle anymore, right? Our world is perfect and we are perfect! There's no longer a need for a hero with human faults to show us how to conquer personal hardships or struggles. Get with the perfect times people..

The Mulan remake really was the culmination of egregious woke-posturing. They tried making it more “authentic to the culture” by... including a witch and magic??? Mulan is one of China’s many great stories just like Wukong. It’s been done and adapted hundreds of times by China. Disney tried to market itself to a market that has done a culturally accurate take way better and proceeded to alienate itself from the people who felt connected to Mulan’s plight and enjoyed the singing along the way in the west. They may depict some of the ethnic and racial prejudices that were commonplace in American society. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. While the following does not represent the Warner Bros. view of today’s society, these cartoons are being presented as they were originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming that these prejudices never existed." It shows about them admitting their company's and people's history instead of white washing that Disney is trying to do right now.

Agreed. And it's always so half-assed too. "Being traditionally feminine is weak and dumb and bad! Be a #girlboss instead! But only if you're skinny and conventionally attractive. Being too unattractive is also dumb and bad." In the end it's all about playing to the center enough that you don't alienate potential customers.

I think a lot of people missed the point of the video. This comment sections is so odd... From what I got from the video is saying that Disney is more than willing to add "strong" female "empowering" characters while mocking the traditional movies for having "stereotypical" or female characters who are "weak." Or something of that sort. But when it comes to racist characters or tropes in past movies they completely cut them out once they remake it. They do not try to acknowledge it. They do not try to improve upon it. They just pretend it doesn't exist and people were never racist. Disney doesn't actually care about supporting females or fixing their offensive history. They only try to appeal to the masses and bring in more views to sell more products. I hope that makes sense anyways. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Reminds me of both the Looney Tunes compilations where WB added a disclaimer acknowledging how these portrayals are no longer in line with cultural norms but censoring them out would be just as bad, as well as how Hangar 13 handled racism in Mafia III by portraying it as it is within the context of the game's story and time period. I'm all for progressivism and equality for everyone, but presentism and their "woke" policy isn't going to make Disney as a corporation any better, it just brings up their excesses even more.

After recently watching all of Hayao Miyazaki's movies, the hollowness of Disney's female "empowerment" rings even more sharply. The nuance between Disney's "always strong and defiant" protagonist and Miyazaki's "strong and also capable of showing vulnerability at times and receiving help without needing to be saved wholly" protagonists seems especially important here. The scene of Emma Watson in Beauty and the Beast immediately trying to escape after being locked up reminded me of a scene in Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind where she is also locked up except she drops down in despair. She's allowed to be vulnerable as well as strong and courageous which makes her feel so much more human. And it goes for all of Miyazaki's protagonists, his movies are basically a series of characters constantly helping one another, showing that they may be vulnerable when left alone but incredibly strong once they come together. I recognize it might be unfair to compare a marketable cash grab approach to factory movie making with one of the greatest masters of animation but the stark contrast was too much for me to ignore

They would've end up in either a zoo or sanctuary (some zoos are both) Still unrealistic in the 1910's I guess? But that's what would happen lol Small edit: I do like Speechless as a song. It is a good song that in my opinion it isn't just about "girl power",tons of people get silenced and don't want to be,it is a decent song and I like it. No movie "needs to exist". I'm sorry, I know that comes off as a cop-out excuse but hear me out: Toy Story 4 was a movie that everyone was moaning and freaking out about how "it didn't need to exist". Even I wasn't sold on the idea, when first hearing about it, and was still rather skeptical even with the promise that they weren't just doing it for money and that it made Tom Hanks and Tim Allen cry. Maybe it was essentially greenlit for money despite the creators' good intentions, and maybe the movie gets worse the more thought you apply to it. But for me, when it came out, I was in such a state of despair and stress, that I felt like one that I needed to do to help cure me is take a trip to the movie theatre to see something that gave me a fun time. And that's what Toy Story 4 did. It livened me up for the time being. And sometimes, that's all a movie needs to do, even if the rest of the makers try too hard to "justify" the existence of something that is ultimately perceived as a soulless cash grab. I don't say this to try and come off as some sort of "Disney apologist", I'm just trying to say that if you don't think their content is good anymore, you can always go watch something else, like an Indie film. If you don't like capitalism, maybe it's time to go support socialism.

There even was a "girl power" sort of song in the stage musical adaptation of Aladdin called "These Palace Walls." It's like why couldn't they use that song in the movie instead as their "girl power" song? It's a more well-written song (IMO), and actually stylistically goes with the original Aladdin songs.

In the original version, I feel like she actually gets a little more agency. Yes, it's gross that she pretends to fall in love with Jafar and kisses him, but she chooses that while Genie is trying to explain the rules to Jafar, not because Jafar is directly threatening her. It's not ideal sure, but it's a more active choice than the weird inconsequential song in the new one.

The worst part is, time and time again the characters they change were already badass. Bell was smart enough to help her dad with his inventions at the beginning of the movie and brave enough to take her fathers place in the original, Nala kicks Simba's ass twice in the original, and Princess Jasmine was brave and kind enough to sneak out of the palace to see her people In the original. Don't add things that were already there. I will never understand why, If they insist on doing it, they don't just make new movies out of the old IPs. Like Aladdin but told from Jasmine's pov, or a continuation of a franchise. I'd watch a Lion King movie about Scar, like they did with Maleficent. Shit, they should even tie that in with their Lion Guard IP.

She doesn't sing it out loud to the people who are trying to silence her. You can tell it was just shoved in there as an afterthought (or not with much thought.) It wasn't a good remake.

Also they ignored how sexualized Jasmine was as the first nonwhite princess. Before her, Ariel was just as revealing in her shell bra and multiple implied nudity but she wasn’t sexualized, she was allowed to be cute and innocent. Jasmine had to kiss Jafar in an orientalist slave harem outfit... Even amongst the live action Disney Princess, Jasmine wears way more low cut tops with purposeful cups in her bustier. They hired a mixed South Asian woman to portray a character with majority Middle Eastern actors around her because Middle Eastern actresses only get to be sexualized or terrorist adjacent. The white costume director made outfits are made with more South Asian elements because they’re afraid of being seen as Muslim.

Well, the original fairy tale was supposedly playing "in China", which could have been some Middle Eastern region under Chinese rule OR mostly Muslim region of China OR just being an geographical error. But then again, some of the elder texts of 1001 Nights come indeed from South Asia/India. But then again, Aladdin isn't even from the original collection, just included in the French version. BUT THEN AGAIN, the Disney movie is settled in Arabia anyway, so all of that is really irrelevant, I presume -.-

I think it's less of a racial issue as an issue of hypersexualization of society and women in general, the unintended consequences of the sexual freedom movement and women being promiscuous and flaunting as much as they, and let's not talk about only fans. Women objectify themselves all the time, race is a non factor in this.
@williammahe
@williammahe 2 жыл бұрын
@@simpbeforeusleep I'd argue that it most definitely is an issue of race. Women of color are much more sexualized in media, including Disney movies, what with their depictions of Princess Jasmine, Esmeralda, and Pocahontas. The thing about Princess Jasmine is that since the story takes place in a vaguely Arab setting, the creators pandered to the orientalist fantasies of European travelers and painters from the late 19th century, who spoke of and painted scenes with mostly-naked women in harems, ready for pleasing. This has historically been one of the most popular tropes in representing Arab women in Hollywood; that is a *belly-dancing harem slave*, or an *abused Muslim wife* that's forced to hide behind her hijab at the mercy of her husband. Other tropes relating to the depiction of women of color in media include the *dragon lady* and *lotus blossom* which hyper-sexualize-and infantilize-(mostly) East Asian women, the *jezebel* stereotype which force Black women on their knees for the pleasure of White men, and the *spicy Latina* trope.

Fans love modern strong heroines like Wonder Woman, Scarlet Witch, Katniss Everdeen, etc. because they're organically written and don't exist simply to push a political message. Most of the heavily critiqued "strong female" characters, like Rey or Captain Marvel, are marketed as such, with the actors and studios bringing their gender up constantly and using it as a defense against critics, e.g. "You just hate strong women." Something that bothers me the most about the remakes is how pointless they are. Nobody asked for any of them. Nobody asked for any of this. Guy2010 no it isn’t. It mocks some of the tropes of classic Disney films but ends up affirming all of them. True loves kiss is real, happy endings DO come true, the best way to behave is the wonderful positivity of Giselle, even if it needs tempering slightly in the real world. It’s packed to the gills with loving homages to all of Disney; every extra is a reference to a Disney film in some way, the lady with lots of kids Edward meets heading up the stars is played by Pocahontas’ actress, the couple in divorce litigation are named after the Banks family from Mary Poppins, the bus driver has her hair styled as Mickey ears and so on. Disney and its tropes are examined by Enchanted and then affirmed by the narrative. It is the least mean spirited film I have ever seen and that’s why it is my favourite film.
