Wolf Van Halen’s Tornado of Tapping on “Take a Bow” | Shred with Shifty

Being born into rock royalty doesn’t make you a rock star-you’ve gotta earn it with your own chops. And whether it’s the classical pedigree of his first name or the hard-rock infamy of his surname, Wolfgang Van Halen has a long lineage to live up to. As he displays on this episode of Shred With Shifty, he’s more than up to the task.
Wolf joins Shifty to teach the blistering, tap-heavy solo for his song “Take a Bow,” from 2023’s Mammoth II. It follows in his dad’s footsteps, sure, but it also shows Wolf has a voice and vision of his own-both of which are just as potent and theatrical as his father’s.
Wolf treats us to a tour of his new signature semi-hollowbody EVH model, the SA126, with details from EVH managing director Matt Bruck. But he doesn’t hold out on the family jewels: Wolf shares the story of his father’s iconic Frankenstein Strat and brings it on the show, with some extra dirt on his dad’s journey from Marshalls to his signature Peavey 5150 amps. When Shifty asks who’s stewarding his father’s invaluable gear, Wolf eases our concerns: “If the world ended, they would still be okay,” he grins.

Seems like a good kid. And I love that he's standing on his on business.... He's not just some spoiled "Hollywood" 'kid.... Spending Daddys fortune and name dropping his way to some sort of pseudo fame. He's passionate about his music, extremely talented, and has his own style apart from his Pops. But you can absolutely hear Eddie in his playing.😊😊😊😊 I look forward to watching him grow musically and see where his journey takes him

I have an early 2007 FENDER Frankie... really got to do some comparisons while he was holding the original I'll tell you what people can say what they want about it being overpriced or whatever but I bought a piece of history when I bought it!!!I play it every day and the craftsmanship is so close to the original I could barely find any differences... it sits by my bed gets played every day!!!

It was GREAT stuff.....Very thoughtful solo which sounds really free & easy the way he plays it....Real MOODY with feel. How his rhythm as a drummer means he knows exactly how he rhythmically places his fingertaps. Did you notice after a lot of his phrases how rapidly he would turn off the volume sustain by suddenly hitting the pickup selector switch on the top horn of his SA-126 ? ....My God, that's a tight operation. Sheer precision.

Massive props to this guy. Not because of his last name but how many people write, and perform their songs completely on their own? He has carved his own path, while having to deflect haters who expect him to be a clone of his Dad, or those accusing him of riding on Van Halen’s coattails. Either which way he’s a tough man to beat, the best revenge is to be successful and let them eat crow. God bless Wolfgang and thanks Chris for another great interview.

Fun to hear how Ed treated the Frankenstein. Its relatable. I still have my first Fender Strat that I saved up for, a 95 thats still going . Its been tossed and dropped, modded like crazy, routed out, different bridges, pickups, three different necks on it, different biologics living on it 🤢etc..and I’m not worried about anything with that guitar, a new dent or scratch is just that. Of course I’m not Eddie or breaking new grounds in guitar design/playing and no one cares about my guitar, but perhaps it was all the same to him. Just a good old guitar.
