Diary of a u-boat navigator: December 13th, 1944 We are slowly heading back towards Europe after a good first patrol in this boat. However, the captain realy wants to use all torpedoes before we get back to Bergen even saying that he will engage a hunter-killer group in order to put to use our homing torpedoes. I hope we won't have to resort to such radical actions that are dangerous and quite frankly, pointless. Well, I guess our attacks on merchant ships are also pointless by this point, so perhaps sinking a carrier sounds better than sinking a cargo ship; but still, there is a diference in atacking convoys of merchant ships guarded by destroyers and attacking aircraft carriers guarded by a convoy of sub-hunting warships. December 21st, 1944 Today we attacked yet another convoy. This time with only 20% battery power left. I guess our captain likes to push our luck as much as he can. Still, we pressed on and fired 2 torpedoes that hit their mark. After that we went deep and waited. The destroyers started dropping depth charges way behind us, I guess all of their technology can't help them hunt down this type of boat yet. At least that is what i hope, for i doubt that the allied sailors are ill-trained like they were at the begining of the war. Anyway, we listened for hours until our hydrophone operator said that the ships we hit started going down. With that, we added another 2 ships to our collection so far and broke away from the convoy without any problems. Our journey home continues. December 24th, 1944 Yet another convoy! We stumbled onto another convoy! Or perhaps it was the one we engaged 3 days ago? Doesn't matter now, we attacked it with our last 3 torpedoes. All 3 hit. We once again went deep and listened. However, after hours of listening, the hydrophone operator remained quiet and the convoy kept moving away. We stalked it for a few hours but yet again, nothing. No ships were lagging behind and no ships were breaking up. And so, eventually, we broke contact and started to make our way towards Bergen. Our first patrol will soon be concluded. Oh how i look foward to breathing real air and seeing real light again. January 1st, 1945 And so another year of this war ends. Again I celebrated it out at sea. Oh well, there were only 2 times during this war that i celebrated Christmas and New Year back on shore. Still, we had fun; we sang along with the gramophone as it played a famous british song while we sailed near the british shores on our way back home. It was a day in the submarine i won't forget. January 9th, 1945 After passing by a lone merchant, and a hunter-killer group passing by us in the previous few days, we finally arrived to the fjords of Norway. And so, the order was given: surface the boat. Hearing those words gave me one of the biggest smiles I had during this entire war. And so i watched the depth meater as it marked that we had surfaced. Soon after, the captain told the watchcrew to open the hatch and get to their positions. As the first crewman climbed the ladder my heart started pounding faster and faster until he began to open the hatch when my heart skipped a beat. Once the hatch opened and the air rushed in, it was the greatest feeling i ever got from a draft of wind. Soon every watchcrew member climbed out and i looked at the captain who was already looking at me. After a brief moment, the captain moved his head towards the ladder in a way like he was signaling me to go up. Bearly being able to contain my happiness, i got to the ladder, slowly put my hands on it, and then quickly started climbing up. After a moment, i climbed up all the way and stood up on the conning tower. For the first time after over 2 months underwater, i breathed in fresh air; i looked at real light and saw the sky with my own eyes and not through a periscope; for the first time over 2 months, i saw land. The facts that it was cold and that the clouds blocked the sun had no effect on me, the feeling of joy and freedom was overwelming. I almost started screaming from joy, but then i heard the captain climbing up as well. When he got up, he looked at me for a moment and then slowly walked towards the railing and leaned into it, watching the shores of Norway. I did the same and said:"We made it captain" in quite an excited voice. A small smile formed on his face as he answered: "that we did Karl, that we did..." After that, we both fell silent as we enjoyed the fresh air, the light that broke through the clouds and the sight of the Norwegian coast in front of us... ( for extra epicness, imagine the camera slowly zooming out, showing the entire submarine as it slowly sailes towards Bergen all the while an epic choire sings along with epic orchestral music). (Well this was a long one, hope you don't mind it too much. Anyway, i hope you all had fun celebrating the death of 2020 and let us all hope 2021 will be much better and wash away the bad taste 2020 has left. I still can't believe how advanced this Type XXI was! The Allies would have been so screwed if the rotten things had come out a year or two earlier.

At this point in the war, I fell like both Axis and the Allied admirals were scratching their heads in pure confusion seeing the sunk tonnage. Keep up the good work!

In this boat the game is almost too easy for someone of Wolfpack's skill. They never even seem to get a hint of his location as he sinks everything.

Happy New Year & Great patrol, I have been on patrol for 2 months & have not even seen a fishing boat, grid ER56, why sent here i can only geuss as it's the furthest i have had to patrol, got my new boat with a heavy load of torpedoes some of which are the homing types which i am dying to try out, my hull integrity has dropped to 80% from air attacks, i had this last time when i had the bigger uboat & succumb to a direct hit via arial attacks. So i am reduced to constant submerged travel by day and surface at night, which is keeping me alive for now while repair teams struggle to maintain repairs, i am heading home now via the north of England were i know there will be some better hunting grounds, i hope. Anyway looking forward to the next installment wolf, Live long & prosper

I finished the SH3 campaign I started back in 2009 last week. U-861 docked for the last time at Wilhelmshaven on the 19th of May, 1945. I got a bit emotional there, not gonna lie. Happy New Year from Hungary! :D

What a tally for a first war patrol in a new boat ! Your skills are complete. Now you are the master.... No medals for the skipper was a travesty. Lucky for us the type did not enter service earlier... They built the type in pieces and in several locations so no boat could be destroyed in one bombing mission, and floated the sections down canals to the final assembly point.
