Hey guys! Thanks for stopping by. In today’s video we compare a factory Remington 700 stock to a precision rifle chassis. The chassis we have chosen is the MDT ESS Chassis.

Have to say it .. if you can't tell which one is "the flier", then it ain't one... Looked like the factory stock was more consistent across ammo types. To me, looked like personal bias towards the chassis because it's COOL!

Luckily we bought a very nice supply to last many years for 5 of us before the I sanity began and ammo makers and powder primer manufacturers began selling mainly to Europe and Africa . Great video! I would say the overall comfort and options of the upgraded stock are way more of an improvement than the accuracy…. I’ve seen many “deer rifles” shoot groups as good as both of the setups in this video. Not saying it isn’t worth upgrading the stock! Just don’t think you’ll see a huge difference in accuracy

Great video. I have the same REM 700. I actually love the stock, not withstanding the flex issues but it doesn’t really bother me as it’s still a very accurate rifle.. I use the Federal Fusion in 180 grain. My understanding is that with the 20” barrel, the 1 in 10 twist stabilises the heavier round much more than the lighter ones so the heavier rounds outperform with this configuration. It’s also designed to be used with a suppressor, without losing accuracy 👍

I own a REM 700P and opted to just get my stock professionally bedded. With match grade factory loads It’s a 0.3 MOA rifle. I think it ran me about $300 to get it done and another 150 to add DBM. I think the smith added the single stage Timney trigger at cost and set it to 2.0lbs. It’s running an older US Optics SN3 scope with an IPHY reticle.

Rem 700 Police series rifles have a MUCH more rigid Plastic stock than the SPS tac does, Bedding them would help. But that is NOT the case on the SPS tac as the Hogue overmolded stock has a very "floppy" forend, its not rigid. its more stiff rubber than solid plastic so it WILL bend more easily when force is applied from below as a Bipod would do.

I'm not impressed. I can agree that the, chassis is nicer to shoot than the factory stock, but your test doesn't reflect anything. A .03 moa increase on the Hornady ammo is not even worth mentioning. A .23 moa increase on the Federal GMM is fair, but the 1.17 moa loss of accuracy in the Fusion is terrible. I assume you are a decent shooter, so you would know when you shank a round. You were dumbfounded by that one shot which means you felt good about it. One three round group does not reflect the accuracy of a rifle. You should have used the whole box, at minimum, three 3 round groups of each to get an average, then you can tell if there is really an improvement.

@@palumbo78 I can explain it with one sample size. I have a Rem 700 my wife and kids got me for Father’s Day about 8 years ago. I spent $1100 just getting the thing true. If it weren’t a gift, I would have just trashed it and called it a loss. I felt compelled to remedy the issues and they are as follows: • action face, 0.014” out of true • action face looked like it was parted off with a hacksaw • scope base screws, 0.028” out of alignment • recoil lug, set 0.040” out of true • bolt body, bowed 0.068” • bolt-to-action fit has to be 0.100” too large. The bolt just wobbles • bolt handle broke off • firing pin assembly looked like the spring was 2” too long. It was a Z shape • firing pin bushing is about 0.040” too large and the flow from the primer is ridiculous and unnecessary Get a Bergara if you’re going the factory route. I’ve researched the heck out of them, shot them and they took the time to care about things Remington didn’t. They shoot great and honor their work and respect their customers. That said, if you really want to be super happy, go custom with good components and a renowned rifle builder and you will NEVER be disappointed.

I know the factory stock of that Remington 700 has flex when preloading on a bipod, but I couldn't help notice that your average time between shots on the factory stock were about 4 sec (+/- .) and your avg on the ESS was about 8 sec (+/- .) Sub MOA on a factory stock is nice, but do you think the groups could have been better on the factory stock if you gave it equal time in between shots as you did on the ESS? im sure the added seconds wouldn't make a whole lot of difference because an aftermarket chassis is still superior.

id say the bigger bonuses of a chassis are the fact that they look sick and they are usually way more ergonomical. good review though

If its not their HS Precision ones, perhaps. I had one shooting 3/8" totally stock. She was the older 5R though and I added weight to the hollow.

I wish I would have bought before they changed over.. I wanted a 5R! I have the exact one pictured here however it does shoot pretty well so I won't complain.

@@Version135 Yeah she was a tack, leaving behind many envious high dollar rigs. I wanted to do some other things to her, but with her shooting like that, I didn't want to risk upsetting her. Got lucky to get her early on in their initial run because an ex marine sniper friend I shot with knew someone at Remington and gave me the heads up. He was amazed, and bragging her off more than me, he had a nice PSS shooting half inch all day as well, modded tho.

I have that rifle with the factory stock. I filled the fore-end of the stock with carbon fiber tubing and JB well while a ten pound weight hung from the front stub. She no long flexes at all, and is still fully floated. Plus it looks a lot less mall ninja at the range.

1 in 10 Twist wants longer ogive... try some 200 grain handloads as well. Or Match king 195 HPBT. If you wanna keep weight down for speed use monolithic ammo since its a longer bullet for similar weight to lead core ammo.

There are two types of shooters. Those that 'plink' with a factory setup, and those that build a custom rifle. When on a budget, its always best to buy a rifle, throw the factory stock, and get a decent stock.

If I'm not mistaken twist rate is less about bullet weight and more about bullet length. Longer bullets just tend to be heavier. But in the case of round nose soft point hunting bullets you get higher weights with the same bullet length. So I wouldn't assume that your 1 in 10 twist barrel likes heavier AND longer projectiles. If you go to a 180gr hollow point boat tail I doubt you'll have the same result.

hen you swapped the stocks, did you have to re-zero the rifle before you shot the tagets?

Yes I did. Any time anything (stock change/removal, scope, muzzle device, etc.) it needs to be re-zeroed.

Guess I got lucky, my SPS is my best shooting rifle. Consistently. I would love a chasis, wouldn't hurt my feelings to change it. Chasis systems are typically out of my price range. Guess I will just have to make due. Mine loves the 178 A-Max/ELD bullets over Varget or RE-15. You should try them with this rifle.

I feel like the biggest takeaway here is that 3 round groups are just not good enough to get a real measure of precision. Maybe the first set of groups just involved a lot of luck to not get any flyers... maybe the chassis groups were just a bit unlucky, especially the one that went completely wrong. The video almost proved that the factory stock is nice and consistent, while the chassis can produce flyers

Really need to redo the test with out useing the check rest on the chassis as you have very bad check weld on fatory stock... Have done this test and check weld will make more difference than a chassis if stock is half-decent..

Whats the barrel length on the rem700 and the rail length on thr MDT? Im looking at putting my Bergara SP 18" in an MDT ESS with 15" rail, but if that is a 15" rail on an 20" barrel, I might not clear the handguard
