There's no bad weather in Hamburg. There's just bringing the wrong clothes! ;)

First night in Germany I went to a concert in the Hamburg St. James Church. I thought I could call a taxi from there, but it turned out I needed to know a telephone code I wasn't aware of. I asked a few people who were closing up the church what I should do. They didn't figure out that I just needed the code, but here's what happened instead. One woman in her 70s walked with me to the train station, not too far away, where there's always taxis. Now think about this - here's an old woman going off in the middle of the night with a man she doesn't know in a city the size of Philadelphia. How dangerous is that in the US? How safe must Germany be in comparison?

Reason 1-Infinity why I love Hamburg: I met my fiance there while on vacation. I'm from Atlanta, Georgia. Best decision I've ever made.

One really great but not so well known museum in Hamburg is Museum fur Kunst und Gewerbe just 5 minutes walk from the Central Station. It is art and craft, history, roman and older objects, musical instruments, furniture, photo, asian objects etc. I was there for a whole day completely unawere of time. One of the great museums of Europe.

The Beatles started their career in Hamburg. Visiting the original clubs and bars they have played in, feeling the old vibe and the history of music, is a great pleasure. Wolter, have you been to one of them? :)

Another insightful and helpful video. I myself have been to Hamburg on 2 occasions, both in May, when the weather is much nicer but not too hot. The mood in the city is better then and the locals get involved more and just come out of their shells.

I could spend a week in Hamburg and not tire of Speicherstadt, Hafencity, studying the old rampart wall and so much more. There's nothing I dislike about this city.

Yeah I remember just ending up in Hamburg for along layover and such a great, underrated city. I guess the "hate" here is actually one of it's greatest strength, as it's really a place best experienced as a very "modern" European city and not really treated like a connect-the-dots sightseeing trip.

Been there last week. Loved the city so much. I loved the fact that It looks like a giant busy city but in fact is more like a big town or village. I found the same people hanging around most of the time!

I think hamburg is a very beautiful city.

I'm not a big city person. I don't care for the likes of Chicago, LA, Dallas, NYC, Berlin, Frankfurt, München, London, etc. It just not my scene, but I LOVE Hamburg. Such a great city, I spent a couple days there in June and can't wait to go back. It's a must see on any trip to Germany.

Thanks for the video and greetings from Hamburg. I love it when my hometown is appreciated! Hamburg, meine Perle... My favourite places are: 1) The "Elbvororte" (the suburban areas along the Elbe): Rissen, Blankenese, Nienstedten, Oevelgönne. You can literally walk (or bike) from Wedel in the West to Altona while watching the river the whole time and pass through these old fishermen's villages with their captains' houses. 2) The "Speicherstadt" (now Weltkulturerbe) with its historic warehouses and the Miniatur-Wunderland which has been mentioned in some other comments before. 3) Hagenbecks Tierpark: A privately owned zoo (the only one in Germany?) with a lot of Jugendstil elements in its architecture. Interesting fact: Did you know that after WWII their elephants helped to clear the streets of rubble? 4) The shops in the city: With its history as a trading city there are many very old shops full of tradition, and I love those little miniature malls ("Passagen"), many of them in beautiful historical buildings. As for the things you don't like: The Reeperbahn is actually one of the least seedy red-light districts in Germany as far as I know (no match for the Frankfurter Bahnhofsviertel). There are lots of "in-places", pubs, clubs, the best Chinese restaurant in Hamburg, Schmidt's Theater and Tivoli etc. , even the police station is beautiful. ... and every party person should at least once go to Hans-Albers-Eck. Aaah, and for the bad weather: We say (and that's a fact), there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing. Buy a "Friesennerz" next time! ;-) Your videos are awesome, keep it up!

Hamburg has been my home for eleven years now (i'm 35) and I don't regret any single minute of it. The city has treated me very well, in many life situations, since I've moved and I will probally never move. The Reeperbahn might seem a bit seedy or shady, as you say, but you could also say the same about Amsterdam in certain areas. It's just not the typical sightseeing place to go to. Though I agree, Lüneburg, Lübeck and Kiel are the better examples for that. The grittiness of the Reeperbahn is what makes it so different from any other mile in the world. It's just not Las Vegas. It's very raw, Rock 'n' Roll so to say. Coming from a now established local, here are my honest top 5 love/hate things about Hamburg, Love 1. The people. Very friendly, down to earth. Open minded. All ages. 2. The pulse of the city. It may seem hectic, but it's not. Hamburg is very mellow step by step kind of city. We don't like to be hastled. 3. Despite being the 2nd biggest city, you can still literally walk from the center (Alster) to the major districts (St. Pauli, Schanze, Rotherbaum, Winterhude) within a reasonable time and not miss out on nice places and parks to see along the way. You can describe it as the largest village you have ever been to. 4. Public Transport. Since everything major is close to and surrounded by other go-to districts, it won't take you long to get there via Bus or Sub or even bike. 10-20min tops. 5. Social activity. There are alot of things to do. Seriously. Even after all these years, living in such a dense city, I still haven't been to a mere width of what Hamburg has to offer. Restaurants, Bars, shops.... Hate 1. The increasing poverty and homeless. It has always been there, but not as obvious as compared to the last 4 years or so. People with real issues are begging in the Sub now, hole collectives sleeping under bridges...You will NOT get mugged, it's just really sad to see all this increase of no options living at your doorstep. 2. Rent and making a living. Yes it is expensive to live in Hamburg. You can be very lucky, when you know where to look, but for someone new, it probally will be a little overwhelming at first. Prices per rented space can be double if not more than compared to other towns in Germany, with Munich at first place. 3. We all know the Beatles made their break here, but the Beatles Museum closed down because no one went to see it. It's absolutely dissapointing. The music scene is there, but Hamburgs upcoming musicans and underground scene are somewhat lackluster. You do get to see great shows, but they all all not from around here. 4. The on-going debate about which city is better. Berlin or Hamburg. There is simply no debate. If you know what I mean... :) 5. It's become a sellout city. Modern buildings. Fancy Walkways. Alot of money involved. Too many big companies taking over and decisions are made which ruin alot of the charm you would see when coming here the first place.

The citizens of Hamburg use to say: "The best thing in Berlin is the Autobahn 24 to Hamburg! 🤣 Love it, i was born in Hamburg but I decided to move to the "Hamburger Speckgürtel" which exactly means "Hamburg Bacon-Belt". It's the economical healthy outer area around the metropole-region of the City which benefits from the neighborhood to Hamburg.

Most important point is the weather... I fled Hamburg because of that. The boat tours: you can take the normal HVV ferries (public Transport) all year around. They take you along the Elbe river and the Hamburg port - the ticket is only around 2€.

Even though most hotels don't provide the tea/coffee/kettle in the rooms, you can have fresh rolls and proper cups of coffee ( not instant) at the bakeries, which are everywhere, at 7am! Also, the choice of food outlets at the mainline station is amazing. For smokers, at the airport, behind security, there is a bar with a smoking room. Take a guided tour of the Rathaus, its got two more rooms than Buckingham Palace!

I recommend a "hidden" Japanese restaurant in Hamburg. It is not fancy, more like a small cozy restaurant and bar in the neighborhood of a Tokyo suburb. The owners are very nice. Its name and address: Daruma, Stadtdeich 1, Hamburg (near Deichtorhallen, a 10 minute walk from Hauptbahnhof).

I visited earlier in the year and pretty much agree with what you said. I'd add that it has a cool transportation system and metro. By purchasing the Hamburg travel card, discounts can become available to many attractions. I personally loved the geography of the place, much of it sculpted by the large areas of water and the many narrower strips and canals. Hamburg has more bridges than Venice, Amsterdam and London combined. Also, there are plenty of large parks and open spaces, very much appreciated in a city of 1.8 million people. Like you said, the people here are great. I was often approached by a friendly local when they saw me staring at my street map and they were always happy to help me find my way. One brilliant attraction I also need to mention is Miniature Wonderland, the world's biggest model railway. Not just for train geeks, this place is tons of fun and features hundreds of moving cars and planes, not just the trains. You will be staggered by the attention to detail and amused by the hidden humour.

It is a fun, honest place, way less perverted than places like LA or Las Vegas... I had probably my best nights there, the best clubs are all on this tiny 1.2 kilometers of madness ;)

Moin moin! I love Hamburg and will be making my 3rd visit there in the spring. I actually find your first point about the relative lack of stereotypically quaint German architecture one of the city's strengths but have to point out that what counts as historical architecture in northern Germany is NOT Black Forest style stereotype in any case. Somebody going to Luebeck expecting their version of Old Germany will be disappointed- completely different vernacular. Anyway I have to also add that what counts as "expensive" in Germany's two priciest cities- Hamburg and Munich- is really very reasonable compared with the nightmare that is, say, Copenhagen. And Hamburg is MUCH funner than Copenhagen. Tschuess!

I've been living in Berlin a year now, and I'm still a ways from feeling like I've integrated and know all the inside jokes, or stereotypes Germans have of their different socio geographical or economic contexts; but I´m surprised about the comment about people from hamburg being open and friendly. What I've heard is that people in Hamburg have a reputation for being dryer, colder and more reserved people than in the rest of Germany, which is saying something. I visited once for a few days, but didn't really interact with any locals, so I can't really say if what I've heard about them is true, but I did notice people seemed more put together and not as grungy as in Berlin which I found refreshing.

You can go on a boat trip on the Elbe from Landungsbrücken up to Blankenese all year through. You can take the HVV ferries. They are included in the public transport, so if you buy for example a day based ticket you can use them on the day as often as you want.

We have in Lüneburg more old buildings then here in downtown Hamburg. I live over 30 years here in Hamburg city and we got more and more new glas buildings, crazy creative buildings and much more.

Another thing you can add to the "Love's of Hamburg" is the football. (Soccer if you're american) 3 awesome teams in the city Hamburg, FC ST Pauli and Altona 93. fantastic atmospheres and a great quality of football. This can also apply to the whole I Germany since tickets for games are only like 10 to 20 euros. So if your a fan of sports or want something cheap to do whilst in Germany I would suggest Football.

At the quatier of Rahlstedt you can find a thousand year old church.

Kiel is also a good place to check around. It's also an hour away from Hamburg.

The boats are a problem in winter only on the Alster. If you go to Landungsbrücken (which you should do anyway), you can get the regular boat lines like 61, 62 and 64 with public transport.

Another nice day trip from Hamburg: Flensburg, at the Danish border. It's located at the foot of a fjord, and there's a lot of Danish influence.

There are a lot of areas in Hamburg that do still have architecture that's quite old.The school I went to, Gymnasium Eppendorf, was built prior to WWII. Eppendorf itself has a lot of older apartment buildings. Next time, let me know before you go and I'll give you some pointers.

hey wolter, just where you are standing in this video (rathaus), cross the road to the left of it and continue for 100m. on the left youll find a fast food cafe, called currys papa. there you can eat one hell of a hamburger. i know maybe you ate better ones in the usa, but when we visited hamburg on the 23rd november 2014 it was so delicious.

Do they still have the Fischemarkt? I worked in Hamburg for 3 years and loved an occasional early morning visit the the fish market to shop through the stalls and watch the Dutch flower merchants. A sad but interesting part of the city is the bunkers that still remain from WWII. I understand they are so well built that it is not economical to remove them. I lived and worked in Winterhude section. There was everything I could possibly need in walking distance though I spent more time and money that I should have at the Jungfernsteig.

I enjoyed the International maritime museum in Hamburg. Also, I visited Cologne just to see the cathedral there. The Rhine was beautiful in June.

Some more things that annoy me about Hamburg (take it with a little grain of irony): 1: Real "Hamburgers" open not quickly to strangers. You need time to reach their hearts. But when they do, you can trust them. The ones who open too quickly are mostly not native "Hamburgers". 2: In the last decade or so, Hamburg people boost with something like saying: "Hamburg is the most beautiful town in the world.". Real Hanseatic people would not do that - they have this kind of "Hanseatic understatement", and they never would boost about Hamburg. Also this is done mostly by the many people who moved to Hamburg from outside. 3: Hamburg is not so open as you think: Three or four years ago the project of a cable car over the Elbe river was turned down in a referendum. The opponents argument was that if the cable was constructed there "would come too many tourists". 4: Hamburg also turned down the application for the Olympic games in a referendum in 2016. 5: And it is a capitalistic city: They refused to employ the greatest composer of music ever, Johann Sebastian Bach, as he was too expensive.... Anyway, it is a beautiful city to visit. Greatings form a Hamburg lover.

Also don't forget to go to the Panzermuseum in Munster (not to be confused with Münster). Germany's best tank museum and very close to Hamburg.
