North Carolina and South Carolina are not the same! I know that may come as a shock to some travelers, but it is true. Here we go through some of the main things that surprise tourists in a good way and a bad way when they visit North Carolina, the Tar Heel State. From Basketball to the mountains and so much more. The Biltmore, the Asheville Experience, and the Research Triange, not to mention NASCAR, some fun culture shocks tourists have when they visit North Carolina.

As an Eastern NC resident, everything you said is very accurate! You’ll notice that Tarheels around the state stick too their areas! The only downfall of living in NC! The map might say 24 miles too a destination but be prepared that it might take longer than 24 minutes too get to your destination! The infrastructure is a bit dated but here in NC you’ll realize that we’re a very patient state!

Another point on driving in NC. If you’re not from the region, you should be prepared for the possibility that a summer rainstorm can suddenly reduce visibility on the road to an alarming degree. And to point out the obvious, don’t keep driving forward if you can’t see where you’re going.

Thank you for mentioning that Pepsi is from NC (I grew up in New Bern where it was invented). Also huge kudos for making the distinction of Eastern (vinegar) and Western (tomato) NC bbq, and mentioning all three Triangle schools. Cheerwine, Bojangles, and Krispy Kreme are all NC fast food staples, but check out “Cook Out” next time you come through here (i.e. you can get a burger, two quesadillas for sides, and a drink for about $6, not to mention the 50+ milkshakes).

I'm in New Bern and the Cook Out, other than their shakes, is a joke. Their so-called combo has a hamburger the size of a McD's cheeseburger, but $ 5.00 without cheese. Their sides, like onion rings, you get all of 3. And the cole slaw is two fork fulls. There are too many better options.

I’m a NC native. My family were Bavarian immigrants who moved to the Blue Ridge Mountains in the 1760’s. If you appreciate the various cultures within the state, do not move here and try to change them. We’ve done very well for ourselves for the last 300 years. We don’t care how you did it where you came from. If you have no intentions of assimilating, stay where you are. We will all be happier in the end. Bless your heart.

@@estherbosbach377 ….how can I “come back to Bavaria” if I’ve never even been there? My family left Bavaria in 1748, that’s 275 years ago for the mathematically challenged. If this is some awkward attempt to virtue signal support for the “indigenous peoples” of North Carolina….. too late. The early European settlers and Cherokee got along with each other quite well. So well in fact, they intermarried, which is why everyone on my father’s side of the family has direct lineage to the Eastern Band of Cherokee. The Cherokee adopted many European customs and technology. From European examples, they created an alphabet, their own centralized government, a written constitution, trade with European settlers, etc….( research “five civilized tribes” ). It wasn’t until 1830 that most Cherokee were forced off of their land. They were not forced off by the local European settlers, but by decree of then Democrat President Andrew Jackson in Washington DC. So go wag your finger at someone who’ll buy your woke BS. Bless your heart.

I live in the Southwest where going 85mph is a normal speed to get from city to city. A lot of open spaces with 80 to 90 mph is what everyone is use to, so driving in North Carolina was natural for me. I also am a die hard COKE drinker to the point that I REFUSE to drink pepsi! So when I travel in pepsi country--I ORDER SWEET TEA! North Carolina has very good SWEET TEA! Once in your life, the Biltmore is worth seeing! We got lost driving up to the “house” so we got to see a lot of the grounds of the estate before arriving at the estate. A friend even booked the Thanksgiving Dinner at the Biltmore and said it was amazing(I have NO IDEA what the cost is). We also saw the Reynolds estate which is also worth going to see. These is also an eighteenth centuary (around the Revolutionary War era) town worth seeing all within driving distances.

Grew up in Biltmore Forest, South of Asheville. Played on the Estate grounds all through my childhood. Love the mountains all around the town, but won't ever go back to Asheville. In the pic with the obelisk, yeah the obelisk is gone and there's much controversy regarding that. But going back isn't about the obelisk. AVL has always been a bit weird, but used to be in a quieter way. Went to high school with Roy Williams. Great guy. Pilot Mountain is nice, but definitely not representative of the Blue Ridge; it's too far East. When I lived in AZ and CA in the 1970s, people there laughed at me coming from North Carolina. Now, a lot of them live there. And are fracking it up. I know all the good secret places to go and see if you all can find your own. Last: Carolina BBQ is the BEST. Just drive towards the East and find a Moms and Pops place. Get all the sides. Or better yet, go to a church covered dish.

I used to a own a Jeep Liberty and rented a Chevy Cruze when I visited Charlotte and Asheville in 2013. That little car was not a good thing visually when driving through mountains. Since that trip, I’ve only rented SUVs on my travel because that’s what I need to feel safe. The higher price than compact car really stinks, but it’s more important to feel safe. Also, a shock was when my GPS directed me down a "road" that wasn’t actually a road at least in sense that it wasn’t paved, dirt, or gravel. It was all grass, and I had to turn around out of there once I had space to do so. It would’ve been fun to drive it more if I had my Jeep and in 4W.

Great overview! i have loved living in Raleigh for the past 20 or so years - the best part is that we are almost equal distance to the beach or the mountains, for fun long weekend trips. I think for me the biggest shock was people eating chicken biscuits (Bojangles of course!) for breakfast! :D Long ago, chicken and waffles weren't widely known either so it just seemed weird. Love it though! :D Asheville has gotten more corporate/less Bohemian over the years unfortunately, the beers shown weren't from there either but all good choices from around the state! My favorite brewery in NC right now is Bond Brothers in Cary, NC. They make great beers.

I had to buy almost all-new furniture when I moved to East Carolina. A relative bargained and wheedled and went to Cary (think: the rich folks in Raleigh) and I ended up with a 3-bed house full of top-end furniture (all 3 beds, living room, dining set) for a total of about $2,300. Not low-end stuff, but seriously nice real-wood sleigh beds, a heavy-wood dining set that looks like it belongs in a billionaire's home, and a massive sectional sofa. This is THE place for used furniture as well as new. A lot of Eastern Carolina beyond the ocean-side isn't worth a lot of visiting, most people are thinking Western Carolina when they think of the state being beautiful. People where I'm at (not close to the ocean) are horrible litterbugs.

It's the grand residence of the Vanderbilt family. Lots of fancy rooms with carvings, giant fire places, book cases, etc. It's worth seeing if you are into that kind of thing. They also have a winery and small farm on site. Not quite on the same scale as Versailles but that is the closest approximation in my experience. See how the super rich lived a century ago.

@@carrielynnmiller The Biltmore Estate is the 250-room grand residence of the Vanderbilt family - NOT the Carnegie family! It took 5 years to build and opened with a party in the ballroom Christmas 1895. I’ve visited at least a dozen times over the past 25 years. The history behind the family and the house is fascinating. It receives no funds from the government for upkeep and is still privately owned and operated. No one lives in the house anymore as it is run as a business and tourist attraction now.

As a local, I don’t think many tourists are ready for just how much the cities actually have to offer, and how big they are. Particularly Charlotte and Raleigh. We have the theater in the ballet in the orchestra, and whatever type of food you want, if you look, we probably have one or two places to get it. And if you want New York style pizza, we probably have as many places for that as northern jersey in New York. New York has come down here and they have brought the pizza with them.

Lol. What??? Raleigh is a mini-city with absolutely ZERO night life! The bars literally close at 9 or 10 pm. Nobody goes out here anyway. I've lived in 6 different states, and I've been around the world 4 times. Raleigh is the most boring city on the planet. The food is nasty. Cheap chain restaurants or nasty mom and pops that serve everything fried. Raleigh is where you go when you're ready to die... ☠️

@Blind panther vlogs The nightlife in Raleigh is BETTER than Charlotte??? Wow. That's scary. We moved here to Raleigh from Los Angeles a year ago. We literally did EVERYTHING there is to do in Raleigh over a 2-3 day period. This is the most sterile, boring place we've been to. 🤯 We bought a huge custom-built home for cash that we love. Our house and the lack of traffic are the only positives for us.

@@MCLBC not to mention, you can also drink on the street downtown in Raleigh. Plus if you get bored of Raleigh, which you clearly have, you also have Durham and Chapel Hill nearby. And Charlotte it’s the nightlife that we have which is not much or nothing. There’s also the state fair. And I know quite a few bars in Raleigh that stay open until 2 AM, they are mostly on Glenwood Avenue.

I know that you should never judge a place by one person but I had to deal with a man in Apex North Carolina that was the biggest jerk I have ever met in my life and I will say his coworkers hated him as well he left a bad taste in my mouth for NC for a long time

Jerks are common everywhere unfortunately. They were where I used to live and there are some here in NC. But, overall, there are some very nice people. You just have to ignore the jerks! They are in all states and no, you shouldn't judge an entire state from the actions of one. If I had done that, years ago, I would've literally turned into a real mountain hermit and stayed away from everyone

I recently moved to New Bern from Florida, but have lived on the east coast from Homestead, FL to Belfast, Maine and I try BBQ joints every chance I get. My opinion is eastern NC BBQ can't compare to real BBQ like Sonny's (Fat Boys) BBQ all over the Southeast, Famous Dave's BBQ in Knoxville and maybe my favorite, Mark's Feed Store in Louisville, KY. This vinegar/mustard based stuff is the worse, especially when they try to make cole slaw. Really good baked beans don't exist. Fried okra? What's that? Great onion rings? No way. And where is the brisket? This chopped, mushy pork is a joke. And this is all served on these ridiculous plastic plates that have about one scoop of the sides. Maybe a field trip is in the future to see what real BBQ looks and tastes like.
