shoesheep: I know right, instead of going there to educate themselves, some people think is a joke. My tears come out just thinking about the atrocities that happened in that place. GOD have mercy on those Souls. Sometimes, when We are young, We don't See things for what they really are, and we make the mistake of only thinking of ourselves, and that is why I think many people make the mistake of taking selfies and walking around the concentration camps like they are just another place (like a green park), but I guess that's because majority of Us modern day folks are Not Well educated and instructed on the topic. And also Culture could influence. I hope Schools in the U.S. and countries in Asia start educating children in their Schools about the importance of the holocaust in World History.

the thing is Asian countries haven't been subject to the Nazis so that why they dont probably get taught it in their schools its more the Japanese atrocity's they got taught makes scene in that they were subject to them. but at the same time it comes across to me as being no narcissistic being all hey im here all happy taking selfies of yourself where some of the history's worst atrocious took place, i see that too often in 20 something year olds the narcissism and idiocy is it this generation or have some percentage of young people are just really that fucked in the head, ha I sound like im in my 60s going see those damn kids.

Wenn du den Fahrradweg nicht als Highway siehst, dann musst du dich auch nicht über Fußgänger ärgern. Grundsätzlich gilt das Recht des Schwächeren im Straßenverkehr. Wenn dir jemand in den Weg läuft einfach bremsen und ausweichen und bitte nicht irgendeine Scheiße beim vorbeifahren rufen. Aber sobald jemand auf sein Fahrrad steigt wird er meist zu einem anderen Menschen. Wenn die Ampel für die Autos rot ist, fährt er auf den Fußweg und biegt rechts ab. Fahrradwege nutzen die meisten auch nicht. Warum auch immer.. Ich find's da viel schöner zum Fahren. Auf der falschen Seite fahren ist übrigens auch ziemlich gefährlich. Früher war das nicht so und alte Leute schauen deswegen nicht immer rechts.

I was in the concentration camp Dachau near Munich. It made me thoughtful. Although I am too young and not from Germany. I never could make a selfie on this place. I even felt uncofortable as I took some normal pictures just for me.

I can't believe anyone would think it was okay to laugh and joke around there. The whole point of keeping the camps open is to make sure we never forget how terrible man can be to each other. There's something deeply wrong with anyone who finds the experience "fun". It's that lack of feeling that leads to atrocities.

Putsch means rebellion. The nazi rebellion of 1923, started in a beer hall, has been beaten down very quickly, Hitler went into prison for 1 year where he has written his infamous book "Mein Kampf". Yes, his kind of humor is dumb rather than dark.

I am German, living close to Dusseldorf and Cologne, 400m away from Munich. I have seen whole Germany, and I can tell: Munich belongs to the most beautiful places in the whole country. For the landscapes alone, it's surely one of the top places you should go to when coming to Germany. I wanna move to Munich myself asap.

What a great video! My wife and I were in Munich a month ago (as our "home base" on our vacation) and this video is just like what we experienced. We enjoyed multiple beer gardens, checked out so much culture, took public transportation to many places, took the train to visit castles and to go to Austria...it was such a wonderful vacation! Thanks so much for all of your videos. They definitely helped us prep for our trip!

My later Father (an Irishman) said Germany was the best place in the world to spend Xmas. He spent 3 or 4 Xmases in Munich and the surrounding countryside. He said it was beautiful, like a postcard, with fabulous markets and hot food stalls. He recommended as a family destination during Xmas, saying there were so many activities for children.

I' m a German with a US. childhood. it's Hof like in HOHO and bräu like BROY and Haus like house. In German you pronounce every letter. Which makes spelling easy!

I loved this video! I just recently graduated from high school and took my last trip to Germany this past April (which was my last before college). I visited Munich (and Germany as a whole) in 2017 as well and fell in love. All of the don'ts that you presented, I completely agree with. Although I speak semi-fluent German thanks to five years of German classes, I felt the biggest success navigating the U-Bahn stations in German. The systems look complicated at first, but the one I used a lot, the orange line that ends at Moosacher is probably the best line for getting to Olympic Park, BMW world, the University, and Marienplatz. It was also helpful since the hotel we stayed at both times (it was a school trip) was located at the Oberwiesenfeld stop on the same line. Hands down these are all great tips.

Though I must add that out of all of the beer halls I visited, I loved the food at the Hofbrauhaus the most. As it was a school trip and we weren't allowed to consume beer, the food made the stop there that much better.

DON'T leave your kids at home! My experience is that Germans love children -- even in the museums. Germany was the easiest place for us to visit with young children (tied with Crete). Something I totally did not expect.

As a German I have experienced that young children (and old people too) are just kind of seen as nasty by Germans. It's a sad thing, but in terms of child freindly services you will pretty much get the minimum. Speaking for west Germany, but there's not so much difference in that regard across the country.

And also people in Munich are the kindest, they were really welcoming, yes they are not very effusive but that doesnt meant they are rude, they are very kind and helpful with tourists and try to ask where you are from. I am looking forward to return :)

And I totally agree: we have the ‚Föhn‘, a special weather category in the Alps when it suddenly gets super sunny and warm. If it’s autumn, winter or spring it doesn’t matter. It’s super lovely to go hiking, mountain biking,... at that time (unless you are headache prone)

Don't forget Northern Italy is just a trip over the Brenner/ Brennario-Munich residents frequent Lago di Garda on weekends (aka Paradise) , Verona ( think Romeo and Julia), Venice, Cinque Terre, etc....gorgeous places most in the US don't realize are just around the corner from Munich. The drive through Austria to the Brenner Pass ( Bremnario) is under an hour! Live in Munich and we hit the road for Italy at least once a minth. You can fly to Verona, Venice in 45 minutes. BOLIGNA, Toscana are worth it to. Basically, Munich is a gateway to the south. Really cool but ca.5-6 hour drive via Austria and 15 minutes through Slovenia and you're in Croatia ( gorgeous). Could go on and on but if you headquarter in Munich on a trip you've got endless possibilities for quick trips. Did I mention Prague? Sorry to bore but the best part of living in Munich are the quick trips over many a borders. Just a note : Munich is humourously known as Italy's northern most city.

I was lucky enough to be stationed in Munich for 3 years 86-89 and never had to put the cold weather liner in my coat. It’s a beautiful city with a fascinating mix of modern and old world. And wonderful people.

There is a sweet spot in Munich after Oktober fest has finished and just before they start setting up the christmas markets. I found really cheap flights (from Manchester, England) and a really great deal on a hotel. If you do your research you can find cheap bars and restaurants and do this city on a budget! It is my favourite city in Europe (Outside of the UK).

Visit anywhere in the off-season. This summer I went to the Northeastern US and Canada to get some of the last states I haven't been to (only 4 left now!), but we went in late may and early june, everything was completely empty! So beautiful, the weather was great, and there weren't way too many tourists because we were maybe a month early! Even Acadia was pretty free, I only saw one or two large crowds the entire roadtrip!

Right on Mark. Heading to Munich/Salzburg in November. Since I live in San Antonio, Texas (too often dreadfully hot and sunny) I'm so looking forward to cold and grey Germany/Austria. Bring it on. I'm going at this time of year to experience dark Munich/Salzburg ambiance with no crowds! Heading to Berchtesgaden as well. You helped me plan this trip about six months ago which I so appreciate. That is true that you can use Munich as a base to take day trips using the Bayern Ticket. However it's only can be used on local and regional trains may be used - i.e. no Inter-City or Inter-City-Express (ICE) trains, and it can only be used on weekdays after 9 am but on weekends from midnight. However if you have an eurail pass you can take any German train including the Inter-City-Express (ICE) at anytime.

well, that would actually depend on where and how much you travel. The current price for a Eurail ticket Austria-Germany for 2 people is 422 Euro, which allows you to travel 5 days within 2 months. The Bayernticket for 2 people costs 31 Euro a day. For day trips from Munich the Bayernticket is totally sufficient.

oh, and don't forget the Hohenschwangauschloß. Right in front of Neuschwansteinschloß. It was Prince Maximilian who reconstructed the castle according to the original plans. It subsequently became a residence of the royal family and, following the death of King Maximilian, the home of King Ludwig II and his mother.

Level 1 - Neuschwanstein castle, the Cinderella castle. Level 10 - Neuschwanstein castle, built by the mad king of Bavaria. Level 100 - Neuschwanstein castle, built be the bavarian king who actually started as a pretty bright mind and done quite well with some aspects of his reign. But he was born into the wrong time and circumstances. Then he went mad. Also the castle inspired Disney.

He likely didn't go mad but was simply declared mad, so that others could seize his power. He died under mysterious circumstances. He drowned in Starnberg Lake near Munich, but it's unclear wether it was suicide.

Absolutely loved Munich when I went last month, and I couldn't even get a table at the Hofbrauhaus on Wednesday night, so I went to another nearby place and still got a good meal and beer!

I think I will make my first trip to Germany in Munich for the reasons you state. It is so easy to get to so many other places. I'm sure places like Berlin and Hamburg are nice but it seems Munich will give you more bang for your buck.

From living there for two years, I first have to confirm everything mentioned in the video, but I must stress that the winter lasts for about 4 months with snowfall every other day and constant ice and sleet on the sidewalks; which might be an awesome experience for a visitor, but wasn't for me practicing ice skating every morning on my way to the office or being unable to open my apartment's windows because of the ice built up outside it.

If you forget to buy groceries in Munich before Sunday, the Edeka in Hauptbahnhof is open on Sundays for a little bit. It's a bit more expensive but a lifesaver if you forgot to plan ahead. Edit: On weekdays it is also open later than other stores so if you are getting back late and have to change trains it's a good place to get a quick snack and a beer.

Hello there! 😀 Thanks a lot for this great video on my hometown. One thing, though: since we are in Bavaria, you shouldn‘t say „Tschüß“, for this is a northern German term for Good Bye. In Bavaria, we usually say „Pfiat Di“ (for people you know very well, like friends, familiy members, kids) or „Pfiat Eahna“ (formal, Singular and Plural) and the informal way in Plural is „Pfiats Eich“ or just „Servus“, which is used for Hello as well as for Good bye among friends. Even though people started to use the „Tschüß“ term in some places in Bavaria, you will experience to be frowned upon by locals. Bavarians don‘t like it. There are even stickers at some shops which say: „Tschüß-freie Zone“ - meaning: this is a tschüß-free area!

We are always happy to see tourists, if they don't behave like clowns in public on the public transport, especially American women sound quite annoying often (own experience from long train rides, where a bunch of US girls had to entertain the whole wagon with their conversation), so, keep your voice down, don't stand in the way, don't block the train doors, and know your beer limit. I've always liked Japanese tourists, because although they come in packs, they were always quiet and considerate.

i'm from munich and i expected this video to be complete bs, but everything he said is true. i especially recommend visiting the deutsches museum. i always wanted to revisit it after the first time i've been when i was just a boy. it's very interactive for kids, it has some thrilling stuff to offer like the faraday cage show and it teaches science, technology and history in a very "hands on" manner. when i visited the east coast last year i had the same feeling when i went to the museum of natural history. it's a very similar experience apart from the fact that one is about biology and old history and the deutsches museum is more about engineering.

The one he mentioned is actually called "Zum Augustiner" and is located at Neuhauser Str. 27 in the pedestrian zone between Marienplatz and Karlsplatz (called "Stachus"). There are many other Augustiner restaurants, though, and you basically do not go wrong with any of them.

Your advice concerning the concentration camp memorial sites is spot on correct. Consider them to be places like cemeteries and act accordingly. Don't take photos, don't jump around screaming like you're on a playground. As a German, I am shocked that even some of my fellow Germans don't seem to know how to behave at those memorial sites.

_ Mattox _ well if it was June I'd recommend the Japanfest 🤔. Düsseldorf is famous for its Japanese population. At the Immermannstraße there are some japanese shops and restaurants with authentic food. Or in the Oststraßse and Klosterstraßse. I recommend "naniwa", "hyuga" and the bakery "my heart". The Weihnachtsmarkt at Düsseldorf is also pretty

Cologne the "Forbidden town", from Düsseldorf point of view, and vice versa ;-) Both great cities, in fact, but completely different (allthough neighbours), Cologne much more traditional, roman and medieval free city; Düsseldorf more modern, province capital and former residence of the local dukes. Oh yes, being gay go to Cologne, it is the "german San Francisco", you know.

Pro tip: Don't visit Munich during the Oktoberfest! Seriously, there will be so much more tourists and especially drunk tourists (which are the worst kind of people anywhere around the world). If you really wanna see it, sure go ahead. But if you're more interested in the city itself then you should pick any other time of the yyear to have a better experience.

We went to Auschwitz this summer. As i was reading up on it, it is written on their web site, when you go to a concentration camp treat it like you were at a funeral. And dress accordingly. I obliged my group (my hubby and kids😉) to be respectful and dress proper (no shorts, tank tops and flip flops!)!
