Russia is expensive? I ordered so much food and beer at this hotel and barely spent over $30.00. Russia is NOT expensive, In fact Russia is great because it's like going to Europe without paying European prices.

Russia is a beautiful country. 2 times was in Moscow, 1 in-St. Petersburg. Beautiful city. Magnificent architecture and history. People are kind. The prices are cheap, very good shopping. Food, beer, wine, vodka! - 5 times cheaper than Rome and very tasty. With respect from Italy.

Dude, St. Petersburg and Moscow aren't Russia. They are a kind of Olympus where chosen live, they are made specificaly to impress foreigners. You don't get the feeling of Russia unless you see some places outside of the showcase, try Rostov, or Habarovsk, or any other city besides Moscow and St. Petersburg, there is a world of diference.

Of course, cities from Russia are not Russia just because they are bigger. It's like saying that New York or Washington are not USA, but some hickstown from Colorado is a true America because it is much poorer and has more hobos. It is wrong to lambast the big cities for being not shitty enough.

Went to Moscow last year solo. I got lost for hours miles away from the city. 3am I'm still walking. A group of 3 young men came up to me and started talking at me. I couldn't understand a word. I was petrified. One took out his phone and made a call. 2 mins later a car pulled up. I was shaking. 3 am in the middle of no where. A woman got out of the car and spoke English. I nearly fainted with relief. The guys were her brothers and they were worried about me. They took me to their home fed me food and vodka. After a few hours sleep they drove me back to my hotel which was actually 2 hours away by car. I'll never forget that. Their Kindness and common sense saved me that night.

When I went to my gf's metro statiton to have a walk with her (late evening), I found out she is talking with some dude. Soon I found out it's an Indian dude, called Ibrahim, whose phone died and the problem is that he got lost. He bought a room in some cheap local hostel so it wasn't an option to find this place. But he told us he made a bank card this morning near his hostel place, so we've tried to find this actual bank. It took us around 10-15 minutes but we found this actual bank on Yandex maps and went there with him. I guess it took around 20 minites to get there. It wasn't a big deal for me a my girlfriend, but Ibrahim was really really greatful. He even told us that we can visit his daughter's wedding when she'll have it. 😅 Tbh it wasn't a big deal for my and my girlfriend, we just knew that our people don't really speak English so there is most likely nobody else who could have helped this poor dude.

@@NicknineTheEagle If you suddenly wonder, the trains improve every year. When I moved to Moscow in 2014, there was not even a wifi anywhere - in 2015 it was on every branch. The same is with the trains - noisy ones remained only on the green line, the rest of the trains now have wide aisles, with TVs and chargers inside. On the blue line, the best, most comfortable, you can go through all the cars. In addition, two years ago, a new ring line appeared in Moscow; it is rather a fast city electric train, integrated into the metro system. Google "МЦК внутри" : )

For point #1. Americans are used to a lot of fake smiles and fake friendliness - whatever you may think of it. You need to come to the South (except for the big cities). There are a lot of people down here who are very legitimately friendly and caring towards strangers. I've had lots of people I didn't know chat with me or help me out in a very friendly manner, as well as in more rural (and occasionally even urban) areas throughout the country. Of course, some people paid to be friendly will force it, but it would be cynical and wrong to assume that everyone does.

I corroborate. I was visiting New Orleans 4 years ago. I didn't have a smartphone , so I stood in the middle of a street fumbling with a map trying to find directions. A car abruptly stopped next to me and a middle-aged white man literally ran out of a car to me. I was scared, because I had read that crime is very high in New Orleans.My heart almost stopped beating, and I almost fainted because of fear and horror. And that person literally shouted at me help with directions, although I never asked him! It was amazing. Everybody was friendly.Later, in the evening, I was mugged by three young Afro-American gentlemen, and they beat me up real badly, but they did in a such a nice and unassuming way, without a trace of arrogance! Care to know the reason why getting Russian visa is so difficult? Because US made it even MORE difficult for Russians. August 26, 2017: Russians have to wait for 3 months for tourist visas . Currently the website of American government shows that processing of tourist visas in Moscow takes 85 days. Student visas take 36 days and other non-immigrant applications require 53 days if processed in Moscow.

I'm German (from Bavaria) and Number 1 reminds me of my "shock" when i went to the USA for the first time, but i was shocked the other way around because i found Americans to be too nice without knowing me haha. Made me uncomfortable at first but later i found out that that's just a cultural thing and probably also the reason why some Americans feel like we are too "cold" when visiting here for the first time. Always consider cultural differences and don't take anything to heart, same in Russia and pretty much any country on earth of course. That said, St. Petersburg is the city to go if you ever visit Russia for the first time! Prost from Bavaria, Germany

As an American I can see how that can throw you off. I've heard other Europeans talk about how we greet each other. Especially down here in the South. As "Hi, how are you doing today?" is almost our formal greeting. The best response for any future travelers would be "Good/I'm good, and you?" We're just more open than other Western nations haha. I do gotta say that I loved Germany when I visited Cologne and didn't find the Germans to be "cold." Of course I'm used to the European way so that might have something to do with it.

I am American. I went to Canada and it threw me off, even with small differences it is a different culture! They are too nice, meaning they don't like to argue. I LOVE meeting people with opposing viewpoints, especially when they challenge me. I bond that way. Many Americans are not as extreme as I am in this, but it is still the way we are. We are a mixed people who just threw our country together a few hundred years ago and went through a lot in a short period of time. We broke off from the Queen with convicted pride. So it makes sense that we are kind up front, and open, and direct, and comfortable with extremes of differences between us. I find it funny how we are culturally. On the east coast people are fast but when they make friends they are more serious about it. On the west coast we are slower and friendlier, but we tend to be cold toward our long term friends. Russian hospitality would be extremely difficult for me to cope with on an emotional level.

I just do not understand what is the problem to learn the cyrillic alphabet? It consist of about half of latin alphabet. It's not like Chinese that is completely different from English. If you can read words, there would be less problems to commute. And yes, in the centre of big cities there are much information for English-speaking people. Do not lie. Well, the alphabet: A/a - a (like in "up"), Б/б - b, B/в - v, Г/г - g (like in "google"), Д/д - d, Е/е - ye (like in "yellow"), Ё/ё - yo, Ж/ж - zh, З/з - z, И/и - i (like in "mistery"), Й/й - short i, К/к - k, Л/л - L, М/м - m, Н/н - n, О/о - o (like in "spot"), П/п - p, Р/р - r, С/с - s, Т/т - t, У/у - u (like in "put"), Ф/ф - f, Х/х - kh (like "h" but harsh), Ц/ц - ts (like in "tsunami"), Ч/ч - ch (like in "chop"), Ш/ш - sh, Щ/щ - soft sh (sh'), ъ - rough sign (makes the previous letter rough), } ---> ы - well, I am useless here, just look through google translator, } ---> they cannot be at the beginning of the word ь - soft sign, } ---> Э/э - a (like in "apple"), Ю/ю - u (like in "tube"), Я/я - ya (like in "yammy").

The Cyrillic alphabet is actually more practical than Latin: every letter stands for one sound, we do not have to use 2 or 3 (or even 4, as you usually interpret "щ"!) letters to denote a sound.
@paulm6529
@paulm6529 6 жыл бұрын
Except the "j" sound. In cyrillic we have to write "дж".

Some interesting points you've made.:) One thing I want to add from experience, that people rarely point out - most of all, being in Russia is not that different than in any other major European city, at least if we're talking about Moscow and St.Petersburg. I've lived in London for two years so I can compare. Yep, a tad bit less safe, but it depends on a district, same as everywhere. I live in Moscow all my life and have never been in a dangerous situation. And also most of the year we have decent weather not that much different from the rest of the world (nothing below zero, reasonably hot, though now the weather is going ballistic all around the world, we are no exception). And about all that's been said about friendliness and the lack of it when it comes to Russian people, I won't speak for everyone but I can say that I love helping foreigners when I stumble upon them while walking round city's center. I really respect people who come to Russia despite the massive propaganda and all the other problems (language etc.), and it's so great they are interested and want to learn about our country. And all the people I know personally in Russia feel the same way. Maybe that is what helps more than anything else - just seeing it and finding out russians are not that different from anyone else (with our lot of scumbags, really, I'm so ashamed of some of the comments for this video) and Russia is just another country with its ups and downs, not some core of all evils with bears walking the streets. When you think about russians, just remember that we mostly grow up on western literature (those who read anyway, and just count the number of people reading books when you ride the subway to get the idea), and what you read defines many of your values. The rest is... well, it's its own for every country. But do try and visit, and see for yourself. It might turn out to be really fun. In a good way! ☺

As a Russian my comments: 1. Visa issues - have no idea 2. Quality of service - if you mean a lot of smiles maybe yes, or waitress all over you, but again it's not even Western but more American thing. 3. English - yes, address young people. 4. Different prices - only some museums and things like that. 5. Cyrillic - yes but come on, you have smartphones, LTE Internet is everywhere 6. Expensive country- well if you smart you can always save money or ask for locals advice, it's not Switzerland or Norway expensive 7. Crime safety and corrupt police - these things are very overrated and much better than 15-20 years ago, I would say Moscow is Not worse than Paris Rome and London personal safety-wise, more like Toronto level safe. 8. Scams and pickpockets - there are no currency scams(hello Prague) , taxi scams could happen - use authorized taxis and Uber

Visa issues is direct mirror of Visa issues inflicted on Russians by the country in question. Ed Lawn , Kazan, Nizhniy Novgorod, Golden Ring towns, Volga tour either from Yaroslavl (one of the Golden Ring town) or from Perm via Kama river down to Astrakhan or Rostov-on-Don. Tours over Crimea and Krasnodar kray. Volgograd alone isn't particularly interesting as it was completely leveled during WW2 and Mamaev Kurgan probably is the most interesting part in the city. You may try less developed tourists destinations around Urals, Siberia (Baikal lake via Irkutsk is the most developed rout) and North Caucasus, or totally exotic tours into Kamchatka wilderness and Russian Far North.

Half of the things he said are totally and utterly Bullshit. 1. The drivers here really care for the pedestrians walking by or crossing the roads. They even slow down and stop their cars if a pedestrian is crossing the road despite the walking signal is off. The traffic in Russia always gives priority to Pedestrians. 2. You can get mugged in any city of the world. It's totally unpredictable. America is even more dangerous for tourist at night time than Russia is. I was in Russia and i swear i used to roam Moscow, Kazan, Sochi, Petersburg streets at night without any hesitation and there was Police everywhere so i wasn't worried a bit. 3. Russia isn't expensive at all. Also that is very subjective and depends on your budget. If you are going to look for 3 plus star hotels to stay in, obviously you will be charged a higher prices. I'd recommend you opt for Hostels or Apartments for that matter. They are great value for the money you are paying. Almost every hostel has Kitchens, Laundry, Ironing, Showers. Russia is a great country and is very underrated for tourists. I'd say Russia is one of the best countries to explore. Everything is amazing in Russia from people to their culture, literature, arts, vodka, clubs, girls, food and sightseeing.

When in St. Petersburg rent a flat, for it's far more economical. As an American, and prior to arriving in Russia, I made arrangements to rent a 5 room flat for $900 for 30 days. I felt privileged to visit both Russia and Ukraine. I highly recommend learning both the Cyrillic alphabet and some language prior to arriving. Doing so only enriches your traveling experience. Learn basic and courteous phrases like privet, kak dela ( hello, how are you) menya zavut (my name is) pazhalusta ( please, and/or you're welcome) spasibo (thank you) etc. In 3 months of traveling each country I didn't experience any issues. I also recommend getting out of the bigger cities, and instead visiting smaller towns too. .

Really useful suggestion. There's a app called "Show Me Around" where you can hire a local to take you around the city. I hired one, she was a college student who had been studying english since a child and used the opportunity to practice her english with native speakers. I paid her 70 dollars for the day and she took me around town, showed me what I wanted to see, ordered food for me, gave me some insights on life in Russia. Very much worth it. I actually still talk to her sometimes.

I made visa in a week via the agency. It was about 5 times faster, cheaper, and easier than getting an American visa. Also disagree that Russia is expensive - transport, food, accommodation, tickets are 4-6 (!) times cheaper than in New York. Also disagree about the safety, did not understand where it comes from because I never experienced any dangerous situation, neither in big, nor in small cities in Russia.

And so what? It doesn't matter what every American knows because I compare Moscow to NYC, which is the closest city to Moscow in the US in terms of population, life style, economy etc., so it is fair to compare them. Why would I compare Moscow to some small US town? Also I don't know which part of the US do you mean, but all big cities that I have visited (Chicago, Boston, Washington) are almost as expensive as NYC (i.e. extremely overpriced in general and also several times more expensive vs. Moscow). If I take a small US town than I should compare it to the small Russian town, but even then the US prices will be about 10+ times higher. Though who cares about the small towns, they are irrelevant because we are talking here about the main tourist attractions.

The difficulties with obtaining a visa to Russia are just an answer to the difficulties of obtaining a visa to the countries of the "west" for russians. Russia does not have visas with most countries of the world (all South and Latin America, China, Asia) and only with Europe and America there are visas. Ten years ago, the Russian government offered to cancel visas, but "West " refused. As a result, difficulties with visas are just an answer to the West. In problem are to blame for only arrogant Europe and America

Well ,80% of Russians doesn't know basic English,so calm.

Russia is a very friendly country, there ara a lot of tourists every year. Sometimes you need to visit small towns to enjoy the country. Smolensk, Yaroslavl, Saratov ... Russia is a vast country, I love and am proud of it.
