Add mechanical strength to a housing joint with a dovetail.
Watch as I explain, and then demonstrate, how to prepare a through dovetail housing joint.
Check out loads of other woodworking joints on my channel WOmadeOD - Made In Wood with Mitch Peacock
I have a playlist, 'Hand Cut Joints', so you can just sit back and watch them all. Of course you should come back regularly, or subscribe, as I will be adding to them frequently.

That was wonderful. I've been interested in hand cut sliding dovetails. This looks like a method I'm going to try out very soon!

Thank Mitch. Never imaged a dovetailed housing joint could be cut by hand. Certainly a lot less noisy and neater than the router version.

I cut my housings deeper than you do - about 1/2 the thickness of the uprights. With modern PVA glues being stronger than the wood itself, I used housing joints on all my bookshelves and have never had any come apart. That said, I have made dovetail housing joints, but I used a router and router table.
@mitchwoodwork
@mitchwoodwork 7 жыл бұрын
Testament to you building them well, as PVAs don't gap fill well, and bookcases can take quite a pounding. Modern glues are great (unless you want to disassemble later on) so more options will work fine with them. I like the tapered dovetail housings (hand cut or router cut, doesn't matter) as you can assemble without clamps.

Sounds like - as we say in the UK, we're singing from the same hymn sheet. I agree about PVA's limitations regarding gap filling, I'd be interested to find out about glues that do both jobs - fill gaps and are strong. I think some US ones fill gaps, but lack strength.

thanks for sharing your method. I always saw the tapered dovetail on the shelf end first and use that to layout the dovetail groove so it's a little different. I have seen instruction on this same joint stating that the dovetailed edge should be facing upwards on the shelf end (Terry Gordon) and I wonder what your rationale is for facing it downwards. Is that traditionally the way? I usually dovetailed both edges but only because it's the way I was first taught. Thanks for the great videos.

greg choma Cheers Greg. Interesting question. I orient it this way to see the shelf enter the side, looking from above as would normally be the case, which visually appears better to me. I'm not sure there is a definitive traditional way, and I would think they were equally good structurally. Cheers.

Mitch Peacock - WOmadeOD thanks. his thinking was a longer shelf under heavy load would deflect and open a visible "crack"at the top of the housing dado when dovetail faced downwards.

Hello Mitch. Very clear explanation. I will definitely will give it a try. In my case I will be building a see thru book case,, in other words, no back. In that case I just cut the joint flush on both ends. Right?
@mitchwoodwork
@mitchwoodwork 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Fernando! You can do that, but I would recommend a tapered dovetail housing joint kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g9VxiLlkm8rLqI0.html easier to put together, and hidden on the face of the bookcase.

Hi, That's called a router plane. They come in different sizes, mostly large (like the one here) and small, and veritas do a miniature one. There are also wooden ones in various shapes and sizes. You can also improvise one by jamming a chisel through an angled hole in a block of wood (bevel down). Very useful to quickly flatten the bottom of a groove, etc. You might like to check out a channel I started for beginners, called Get Into Woodworking. Happy woodworking, Mitch

A good thorough explanation, thank-you. Just one (admittedly nit-picking) suggestion - at aboout 11:16 you say something about cutting at "the right angle". As you're not talking aboout a 90 degree angle there, it might be better to try and say "the correct angle"

Hi Matthew, I'm using a Japanese marking knife with twin, single bevel edges. Very useful for left and right handed marking. I believe I bought it from Axminster Tools, although it was quite a few years ago. Happy woodworking, Mitch
