One Texas woman says she almost died after taking a daily supplement. Emily’s friend suggested a supplement to help her acne-prone skin. She took the supplement for 10 months before experiencing stomach pain, fatigue, and the yellowing of her eyes. After being admitted to the hospital she was diagnosed with acute liver failure. Was the supplement to blame? Gastroenterologist Dr. Su Sacher weighs in.

EDIT: Did some digging and found out it's a "$50 supplement from Alani Nu which narrows it down to their Balance Powder and Super Greens powder. Looking at the ingredients the Balance Powder powder has 120 mcg of chromium O.O. Chromium is a mineral and has adverse effects when taken in large doses (liver dysfunction is one the listed symptoms). The standard recommendation is 29 mcg for women. Why a supplement company decided to give 4 time the recommended daily allowance of a mineral that can be toxic in high doses is beyond me but it's the first time I've run across a supplement company promoting absolutely insane levels of a mineral/vitamin that is toxic at high doses. Pretty sure she was megadosing with Vitamin A. It's a common medicine for acne. Although usually it requires a prescription and has to be done under the supervision of a doctor for this exact reason; it has a bunch of nasty side effects, some people try to go the cheap way and just megadose with vitamin A (it's highly discouraged by doctors and not because they want to make a buck).

Why automatically blame a supplement? You didn't state what it was that she was taking in the first place, which is suspicious. What else may she have taken; for example, a prescribed antibiotic, which may in fact cause acute liver failure in some people, or even something as easily obtained as Tylenol, aspirin, etc.? True, the warning to be mindful of which supplements you take, and to let your doctor know what you're taking; especially prior to surgical procedures, is appropriate. Though I don't think it is fair to automatically blame some supplement, which you never disclosed, and fear monger like this. I think that doctors need to start admitting to their patients that indeed, their prescribed medications, whatever they may be, can and do cause serious, even fatal reactions in people. Don't make fools of your patients, and tell them that they're essentially crazy, when they come in with very real, serious reactions to a prescription. I'm one person that this has happened to, and the medical provider literally said to my face that, "the drug wouldn't do that!" Luckily, my father, who was a very good medical doctor, confirmed that it WAS the prescribed drug at fault, and told me to immediately stop taking it upon seeing the reaction that it was inflicting upon my body. Sadly, I could trust my father, whom was a good, caring doctor, but I can't trust the majority of doctors I've seen in recent years. They don't seem to care one iota, are smug, and refuse to listen to patient complaints. I'm truly disgusted.

Just do exercise, walking under the sun, eat healthy if you're anxious and regular time with the people you like or love. The doctors don't believe it causes horrible side effects. Only doctors who are caring and have great knowlwdege about physiology believe. And this is not the only medicine that had caused me damage. Antibiotics too for the amoebiasis. So eat safer. It took me like 6 months to be able go walk pain free (I had lots of joint pain, fibromyalgia type pain all over my body, spasms, etc). And no doctor would believe me!!! They even told me to go to the psychiatrist because “I was making it all up” and I “seemed anxious”. Well of course I was anxious of going to doctor after doctor asking for help and all of them gaslighted me. You’d be anxious too if one day you’re a completely healthy 30 year old and a week later you are bed bound and completely dependent on other people.

I used to use Hydroxycut in 2010. I had horrible migraines and I had severe inflammation. I stopped taking them after going to the ER. I now suffer from my liver and anything that I take that's bad for my liver, even aspirin or Ibuprofen.. will quickly inflame my liver and cause acute pain. So It's dangerous. I now read every ingredient in any bottle and research each one learning their pros and cons and where did it come from. Also go into reading reviews, since no one has the same effect or is allergic to the same thing. Now I will for ever suffer from my liver and it sucks.. Be Blessed.
