There are new details in a debate pitting religious freedom against discrimination, surrounding the question of whether a mid-state baker should have to make a cake for a gay couple's wedding.

I'm gay but religious freedom is religious freedom. To be honest, I wouldn't want someone BEGRUDGINGLY making my wedding cake anyway. I want it made by someone who, you know, would happily take my money to make me a cake. Edit: Pretty sure folks read the first sentence and just stopped reading lol. If you don't get where I'm coming from, you don't have to. Feel free to buy a cake from someone who doesn't like/agree with your marriage if you want. We're not talking about marriage rights, housing, employment, public aid....we're talking about a small business that provides a creative service for a religious ceremony.

@siamesefightingfish28613 жыл бұрын
@@bartwilson2513 "Wow." Nothing happened to me, not that it's your business. My point still stands as is. If a bakery doesn't want to serve me, I'm not going to *make* them. Seems counterproductive to have someone who hates gays be forced to make my wedding cake. For what? My ego? Do you really think you have the right to *force* a private business to make you a cake? There are plenty of bakeries to go to. Leave a bad review and move on. I'm not a sadist. Are you? It makes no sense to support/spend my money in a place who hates my existence. They're free to refuse service, just as I'm free to spend my cash elsewhere.

@@jules1728 That bs. Why should a costumer go out of their way to see if a business is LGBT friendly before doing business? Do we need to see if a business is black friendly before a black person does business there? If you're open to the general public, you cannot legally refuse to serve anyone because of race, gender, nationality, religion , or orintation/gender identity. Can you refuse to obide by the law? Yes, but at the same time, they have the right to report you the BBB and other inteties for wrongful discrimination. Your prayerlife and worklife should be two separate things. Mingling the two will result in one person overstepping their bounds. Providing a service for a gay couple does not make you gay or a gay ally. It's a business transaction. Nothing more. These are probably people you'll never see again afterwards so why make a big deal out of it? Because you think it's wrong? It's not up to you to decide how others live their lives. Christians need to understand that freedom goes both ways. While it's true that people can worship any God or deitey they choose, you cannot impose your beliefs on others. Telling a gay person they shouldn't get married is imposing your beliefs. LGBT people have just as many rights to persue happiness as anybody else. Don't like it? Get out of the industry that deals with weddings, because majority of straight couples aren't getting married these days which means less clientele. They outa feel lucky gay folks still want to get married. That's leaving money on the table and if it doesn't make dollars it doesn't make sense.

Freedom by definition means discrimination. People who support anti discrimination laws are against freedom. Discrimination is best addressed by establishing social norms which discourage it, not through the application of force. Because everyone discriminates, and if you empower the govt to use force against those who discriminate, one day that force will be directed at you too.

I don't really think this is okay. Some people are saying that it is the bakery's right to practice their religious beliefs. It is illegal to refuse service to someone based on color. Why should sexual orientation be any different? The company isn't going against their beliefs by charging someone for a piece of food. Now if they were giving out free cakes to a whole bunch of people and did not want to give this woman a free cake for her lesbian wedding, that's fine. Charge her. But ultimately, a business isn't a business to help others. It's to make money. The only thing this religious woman is doing is not allowing herself to make money, not necessarily deny this woman a cake for her wedding. There should be a law that if you want to run a business, then you need to do it. I don't believe in cherry picking customers - it isn't doing anything for either party. If anyone wants to fight me on this, I would like to see in the Bible where it says someone can't charge someone money for a product if that person is homosexual. There is no such thing. This woman was purely doing this to hate. There is nothing religious about this.

It is important for businesses to be free to refuse service for a multitude of reasons. However, it is also important that church and state be separate. As a government employee, I should be held to serve the public (for instance, issue a marriage license), but as a citizen I should be free to say, sorry I want to handle my business according to these principles. And people should be free to do as this lady is doing, calling attention to your business practice. Keep America and Americans free as much as possible, but uphold civil rights in the courts and in government agency. Uphold and enforce laws that protect people and their civil rights. Demanding a cake from a specific baker is not a civil right.

Even if the Baker wasn't outright disrespectful it is still discrimination. "Discrimination is regarded as unfair when it imposes burdens or withholds benefits or opportunities from any person on one of the prohibited grounds listed in the Act, namely: race, gender, sex, pregnancy, ethnic or social origin, color, and sexual orientation." Sure, it's a belief in itself if she believes that two people of the same gender shouldn't be together, and still is understanding and doesn't treat them any different of a human, but it becomes discrimination in the grounds of denying someone service because of their sexual orientation. Anyways, I see both sides of the argument, an article with a similar situation states this, "When businesses open their doors to the public, they must open them to everyone on the same terms, regardless of race, color, national origin, disability, or - under many state laws - sex, sexual orientation, or gender identity. Even when a business owner’s religious beliefs may motivate them to discriminate, that doesn’t justify an exemption from our civil rights laws. Providing commercial services, like selling cakes, doesn’t mean a business owner is endorsing anyone’s marriage. It simply means they are following the rules that apply to us all."

There is a law called the civil rights act , and no business would deny someone based on race , but they can deny for serious reasons , such as causing a disturbance in the business . Race and religious reasons are different . If a Christian /Muslim /Jewish baker refuse to bake a cake for a gay couple about to get married is within their rights , because that’s their beliefs . going back to the original case the Christian baker would have happily sold a cake to the gay couple for another specific occasion other than for the couple’s wedding
