Immigrants and the homeless have completely different needs. The majority of immigrants need employment and temporary housing, while a large portion of the homeless have either mental or drug problems that create their situation. Permanent housing that's either free or below market value is what is needed for the homeless. Along with the mass reopening of mental health facilities that happened during the Reagan era.

Under international law one has to claim asylum at an embassy or at the border of the first country one comes to after fleeing the home country. To come here on an R-1 (religious worker visa) as she did with her husband, I believe one must have a sponsor in the U.S. and that sponsor is normally an employer. In this case, I believe the church they mentioned is paying - probably a stipend so she and her husband can have something to live on. There are rules about how much an employer must pay a legal immigrant, though. It has to be enough to live on. (I worked at a university - in the med school, in a neurobiology research department - and processed many applications for H1B visas for postdocs to work at the university to get their PhDs.)

First of all, for all we know she and her husband might have been financially comfortable to begin with. When I was processing visas for postdocs to come and work at our university as researcher scientists, quite a few of them came from wealthy families in their home country, whether that was Turkey, South Korea, France or wherever. She might have brought those Gucci glasses with her. As to being paid, it sounds as if the church sponsored her and her husband to come here, so the church would be paying them (perhaps just a stipend sufficient to live on.) I believe she means she doesn't get anything extra for the work she has done setting up and running this charity/"store."

It's a Visa to allow anyone to enter the United States. American History on Religion 101... Pilgrims, Nov 11, 1620, were the 1st to arrive, which then evolved into Freedom of Religion, which is why this women is here... I have to ask; where did you come from?? Cause if, your an American this is taught in Public School starting in Elementary😮 Any person, any Religion, is able to apply for A Visa, than a green card or apply to become a Naturalized Citizen.
