What is the difference between being comatose and being catatonic?

@@DonnaBrooks similar states but catatonic patients are conscious and have neural reflex but not always responsive like verbally or ambulatory and comatose has loss of consciousness and neural reflexes. Catatonia has various causes and several types. It is a psychomotor disorder so the ability for normal movement is effected. Most often no movement but hyperkinetic catatonia presents with agitated movements and self harm sometimes. The lady I cared for had this type and would claw at her arms until they would bleed and consequently was kept with mittens on to keep her safe. Catatonia is often misdiagnosed as comatose.

The loving care she received for 20 years keep her alive. God was watching her all this years for the doctors to see that miracles happen. But sadly today they want to disconnect the patients shortly after they are in coma and doctors tell their relatives that there is no hope and that they will never wake up.

If they did their job then yes. But at the same time they are getting paid. Even if they did try their best which is really rare for some employees unless if they actually like the profession and take their job seriously...the parents paid who knows how much money in order to keep her alive. In reality if the nurses weren't paid they wouldn't work for free would they? It's not fair that they had to pay that much. There should be a law stating that healthcare should be free for all because they went through a lot of grief and in this case the parents went above and beyond to take care of her, its not like they just left her to the medical staff.

When a person is not able to move on their own and bed bound they will have SEVERE skin breakdown of not properly cared for . By the time I got to him he was already too far gone with infection from the bedsores all bc people didnt change his body positions ...something that takes little effort ... So your entire statement is completely false. She clearly had great care . Educate yourself before belittling someone.

It is unfortunate that so very many nursing homes don’t give that level of respect to conscious patients! Also her skin is very beautiful, her face is virtually flawless.

I’ve never been in a coma but I believe you are correct… Just because people don’t move doesn’t mean they don’t sense. We have no idea what people are thinking just because they can’t tell us.. I think it’s extremely important to be very kind & mentally emotionally encouraging & also realise to be patient in cognitive function processing… it requires a huge amount of energy. I am quite sure this is what the rest helps with , it’s severe trauma & mass cellular healing I would think.

Screaming was probably the easiest thing to do after reorganising so much of the brain. It's also the first thing a newborn does. The simplest, most direct way of communication that gets attention. And it worked. After that is was probably more about relearning how to use the new speech center.

My sister was run over by a drunk driver when she was being crossed over the road from high school by a lolly pop lady..In England lolly pop ladies were officials who stopped traffic so children could cross safely. She was brain damaged and in a coma for a month. Her recovery was brutal and she was changed forever. Today she would appear normal to a stranger but to us she is a different person. The drunk driver was coming home from his daughters wedding and so I feel sorry for that side of their family too. Everybody lost out and there was no winners. I used to walk home with my sister from school everyday but was held back at school for one hr that day. The guilt was terrible that I was not also injured and wasn't there when the tragedy happened.

It's true but look at the UK. Here we pride ourselves on our free NHS - National Health Service - which is a blessing in many ways but in the same circumstances as Sarah the doctors would have forcibly turned the machines off. Parents of very sick children do not get to be part of the decision, the doctors feel the need of a hospital bed outweighs parental choice in the matter. I would rather sell everything I own to keep my kid alive than be left at the mercy of the doctors' decision.

I am in the US too and my mind did the same thing. My daughter had heart surgery as an infant. The bill I received was out of this world.

I have had many children and adolescents call me dad, even after explaining their dad might take offence to them calling me dad. They reply, you are more of a dad than my father will ever be. That being said, if you want a father figure present in your life, open yourself to the possibility of a surrogate. There may even be someone in your life already that treats you as their daughter. The creator of existence is father and mother for that matter, unless you have denied that connection. I know the reference is father, but it is not one gender or the other, nor is it both, but the knowledge and ability of both in regards to attributes. I hope you know what I mean.

I stayed in Alaska for 15 full years & THEN I NEEDED TO GO BACK TO THE LOWER 48 & they put me in an OLD HOMES PLACE literally! And ELAINE SMITH my SON hasn't spock to me, wrote, called either! People "do come out of comas after decades all the time?" Really? We don't hear about that. The only people I have ever known in long-term comas certainly did not.

I wondered about that. Is it different now in 2019? How is it determined who gets the ROM treatment and who doesn't? Or does everyone? I can't imagine the workload. Then again, I have no idea how many people there are in this state to begin with. What, if any, training do you receive in this area? Sarah talked about 9/11 so it appears that she was hearing what was going on around her. Is the training geared towards being aware that the patient may be hearing and feeling everything you do? What a surreal career.

Uncondirional love is taking a decision having what the loved one would want in mind. As opposed to one that will make me feel good and make my loved one miserable at the expense of my having them near. If you guys have absolutely no medical training perhaps verbalize your opinions in fields, which you know a thing or two about. Ignorance is no virtue.

@@giselesaez9865 That's not fair. Who are we to judge what love is for others. She was only on a feeding tube so they would have had to starve her to death in order to let her pass. Her parents lived their life as they chose and made decisions for their daughter as was their legal right (as opposed to your illegal suggestion of continuing on in such a morbid manner and Lord knows why your mind would even go there). God forbid I should find myself in such a situation with someone I loved dearly. I can talk big now but in that instance I have no idea what I would do. I wouldn't post my story though because certain types love to watch it just to add some negative comment. To all the people on here that sent words of love, sympathy and understanding...you guys are awesome. I'm with you! Now THAT is love! Let's not be negative and judgemental when someone chooses to share their story and the ethical decisions they made throughout the person's life.

Being aware of the surroundings and not being able to speak for 20 years?? That would be horrible. You could not tell your family you loved them. You could not tell them if you was cold or hot...That would be pure torture!! Just Suffering For the person in the coma and the family!! Sad

@@kaylalopez795 I don't think ppl fully understand what happened here. This woman wasn't on life support. She was breathing on her own, her heart is beating. There was no option for her parents to remove her from "life support" . The ONLY life intervention she had all those years was a feeding tube in her stomach. Do u understand that it would be a long painful death to STARVE someone to death?? My husband was attacked from behind in a robbery in 2014. he was hit in the right side of his head with a bat. he fell unconscious on the ground, face-first, shattered his whole face, and then they raised the bat up and came down on the top of his head with it. he was rushed to the hospital.. I didn't find out until the next morning. he had emergency surgery where they removed a fist-sized blood clot off of the right side of his brain, the same size as the girl in this video. the force was so much on the right side that it caused his brain to slam into the left side of his skull, causing a bleed on that side as well. he had a third brain injury where all the little blood vessels attaching his brain to his skull we're broken and busted, similar to shaken baby syndrome. 2 separate fractures, 3 brain injuries. he was on full life support for seven days. where his injuries were at made it impossible for him to breathe on his own. after 7 days we decided to remove him from life support because everything that made him human was gone. on day 5 he had had multiple strokes from his brain swelling that they call a secondary brain injury. so we had that option to choose to not let him live that way and I would NEVER have left him living that way. It was the hardest and most SELFLESS thing I've ever done in my life, bc BELIEVE ME, I didn't want to let him go! But it was no longer about me, our children. It was about doing what was best for him and doing what HE would want, no matter how much it hurt me. but these parents did not have that option. where her brain injury was at, her body was functioning and living, she just couldn't eat or swallow, and it is NOT a humane thing to do to starve a person to death. it just doesn't work that way

When they come to you asking your wishes on life support it sort of slams into your heart and you want to run away but you can't. I too went through this with my mother in 2013 and my older brother 7 months later. Thank you for sharing so that those that may need to understand can perhaps get a better grasp on the situation. You are absolutely right about this lady here. She was surviving on her own, breathing on her own...apparently her body had not chosen to give up so "all they did was feed her" or choose to let her starve to death and this type of death does not come quickly.
