I'd love for this to be a continuing segment. Every once in a while you pick a new director, watch all of their films, and rank them. Might I recommend Michael Haneke as a potential choice, he's my personal favorite director. Oh yeah, and my ranking of PTA is: Hard Eight Inherent Vice Licorice Pizza Magnolia Punch-Drunk Love Boogie Nights The Master Phantom Thread There Will Be Blood

Since it seems like we're getting deeper into the movie stuff, I would recommend the novel "Antkind" by Charlie Kaufman. He's the writer of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, and the writer/director of Synecdoche New York and I'm Thinking of Ending Things. It's an absolutely astonishing book and I would LOVE to hear your thoughts on it.

Something I love so much about The Master is how PTA is able to deal with so many subjects like WW2 veterans, scientology - you could even say it's a film about the postwar period and how it affected the US - still, he knows how to keep it small, and makes a story about the characters. I think he learned from the unsubtle ways he dealed with themes in There Will Be Blood. There are no "I am the third revelation!" moments in The Master. Characters come first, and then you can dissect other themes.

Hey Jake, long time fan, thank you for reviewing the movies of Paul Thomas Anderson, it feels refreshing to have a new opinion on it and finding appreciation about the Master that I still think is kind of underrated. I would wonder if you'd seen or what your opinion would be about the movies of Michael Haneke that does not really fit in the cinematography style but seems to be finding a strange resamblance when it comes to theme exploring but most importantly narrating around the theme. Caché and the White Ribbon seem to be quite the closest when it comes to it. Great job as always, respectful kisses from France!

REwatch Pahntom Thread. First time I just didn't vibe with it. A year later I went back and it's now up there with his best.. I think it's the humour and twisted nature of the relationships. Such a great time wrapped in traditional clothes, like his creations. Then again I had a similar experience with the Master. But Phantom Thread is edging the pack.

For the Treasure of the Sierra Madre connection, I think PTA was connecting to the theme of people selling their souls for more and more money. Both TotSM and TWBB play with their rustic Western settings and the idealistic freedom that tends to be connected to them to show how people act when they have that freedom, how forces of greed taint idyllic paradises and how the maverick and the cowboy can become just as horrible and soulless as the greedy executive when avarice consumes them. Part of the genius of TWBB to me is that it feels like an anti-Western in that its not about how greedy outsiders encroach on the idyllic freedom of the open West but rather how that greed and cynicism often comes from within, that the freedom of lawlessness led to worker exploitation and death, how the idealism of the Bootstraps Entrepreneur curdles into something just as bad as those he supposedly is ideologically opposed to. TWBB always had a bit of an Animal Farm structure feeling to me in the end with just how much Daniel becomes the worst excesses of the capitalist system he was laboring under in the beginning, and I definitely think that Dobbs and Daniel are cut from a similar cloth.

I had a similar first experience watching There Will Be Blood, I watched it probably at the age of 13 or 14. I did not get it, I could not figure out why these characters are acting so differently from other movie characters I’d seen. It was also pretty slow for me, I was used to 12 Angry Men or Spielberg classics at the time, so long 5+ minute scenes of no dialogue were absolutely foreign to me. I liked it, but didn’t get it. Years later, and probably 20 rewatches later, I would place it at #2 on my all time favorite films list behind 12 Angry Men, but it’s really close. Everything works for me, its one of the greatest scores of all time combined with some of the best cinematography, writing, and direction ever. And the best performance of all time in Daniel Day Lewis’s portrayal of Daniel Plainview. Plus, a deeply underrated performance from Paul Dano who might be the best pathetic antagonist in any movie. It’s cold, it’s sad, it’s disturbing, it’s occasionally funny, but it’s also epic and exciting. I find the ending equally hilarious, horrifying, and deeply sad, it’s a perfect movie to me.

my favourite's TWBB with Boogie Nights chasing it. I think TWBB and The Master would be a perfect double feature on how PTA examines megalomania and American industries being born at essential turning points in such short history. I haven't really loved him since The Master, I was *really* sour about Inherent Vice and more so on Phantom Thread, but Licorice Pizza was the first one in ages that made me happy with what I got. Hard Eight is one of my favourites, above Magnolia and the post Master films. it's a solid, 90 minute pulp story that feels like a forgotten Parker story. you can tell why PTA and Tarantino are pals too from it because it takes a lot of cues from Reservoir Dogs in my opinion. Phillip Baker Hall is just etherial in it as this supernaturally calm and aware fixer with a solution to everything- Sam Jackson's great too in an underrated role. when Hall died last year a local arthouse cinema in my city (GFT) did a 35 mm showing of Hard Eight to memorialise him and I was part of only a few in the audience that had seen it already. it was sad but also part of the films charm that it's such a ghost. TWWB Boogie Nights Master Hard Eight Punch dRunK Love Magnolia Licorice Pizza Phantom Thread Inherent Vice. also really loving this series, it's nice seeing you be more upfront about your interests and making the videos you obviously got into KZfaq for.

The statement about being alienated by 2001 and there will be blood is so well stated. Watching that as someone who has never made a feature length film and aspires to is so intimidating and sickening. Instead of being turned off from creating after watching films like that, you have to be able to appreciate the filmmakers themselves and acknowledge their competence.

Good video, but... Why do you make a list when you haven't seen every movie? It's not like PTA is particularly prolific. To date, he only has 9 movies. I thought the same thing with your Wes Anderson video, like, what, you couldn't wait a few days until you'd seen French Dispatch and Asteroid City to make that one? Just a nitpick, and really Hard Eight is pretty skippable anyway. P.S. I didn't much care for Shortcuts. It was just totally average. PTA took that and made it much more stylistic and cinematic and gave it a lot more distinct voice and personality and color with Magnolia. It's like, Shortcuts is the bland Tofu version, and Magnolia is the real meat. Just a random aside. P.P.S. Not that anyone cares, but for me PTA would be, 1. Magnolia 2. Inherent Vice 3. Boogie Nights 4. Phantom Thread 5. There Will Be Blood 6. Licorice Pizza 7. The Master 8. Punch-Drunk Love 9. Hard Eight
