James DeMile, one of Bruce Lee's original students, talks about how he met Bruce Lee, and how that first challenge completely changed his fighting style.
James DeMile, one of Bruce Lee's original students, talks about how they fought and trained. Did he ever try and knock Bruce Lee out? Was Bruce Lee the finest street fighter he ever met? And much more.
In 1959, James W. DeMile began his martial arts career in Seattle, Washington, under the direction of the legendary Bruce Lee. As one of Bruce's first generation students, Mr.DeMile had the opportunity of assisting Bruce in developing his unique fighting skills. It was also DeMile's privilege to appear in Bruce's only book, "The Philosophical Art of Self Defense". DeMile was an undefeated heavyweight boxer in the Air Force as well as "Masters Level" hand to hand combat instructor for the (Special Forces Combative's) program at Fort Lewis in 1985 and 1986.
One of the foremost authorities on modern Wing Chun, DeMile has adapted Bruce's modification of the ancient art of Wing Chun and created WING CHUN DO, a practical self defense system for the 1990's student. DeMile is listed in Bob Wall's Who's Who in the Martial Arts, The Genealogy of the Ving Tsun (Wing Chun) Family by the Ving Tsun Athletic Association, The Original Martial Arts Encyclopedia by John Corcoran and Emil Farkas, Bruce Lee's Fighting Spirit by Bruce Thomas. He has also written many articles for national and international magazines. He has appeared in the movies, Weapons of Death and The Curse of the Dragon and twice on the national TV program Entertainment Tonight. He has written four best selling martial arts books as well as produced a number of training videos, including "Bruce Lee's One and Three Inch Floating Punch", one of the most devastating strikes in the martial arts. He has designed and built a number of specialized electronic training devices as well as some versatile spring loaded wooden dummies. DeMile travels extensively throughout the world teaching his dynamic self defense concepts and techniques to students, police and the military. He specializes in accelerated self defense programs for individuals 40 years old or older. His most famous student for learning the incredible One and Three Inch Floating Punch is 80 year old Professor Wally Jay, creator of Small Circle Jujitsu. DeMile was still an active Deputy Sheriff with the Ottawa County, Ohio, Sheriff's Department until 2005.
James DeMile died on 15th August 2021, we celebrate him and his memory.

Saying Bruce Lee was not a real fighter because he never won any tournaments is like saying the Army Special Forces snipers are not real snipers because they never won an Olympic gold medal.

Bruce never 'defeated' trained, talented fighters other than in sparring. Saying Lee wasn't a proven great fighter is actually like saying an Olympic medalist isn't a proven great sniper.

@@johnmcdonald5074 Sure, unbelievable. Crazy fast, creative, charismatic, & as fit as fit can be. but we DO know he was never in a fully-competitive fight with a great fighter, unless you actually believe that James DeMile was a great fighter. Please say you don't.

@@lazur1 Again I disagree. What we do know is that he was never in a fight that was publicized or was at a tournament. What goes on behind the scenes we DO NOT know. What do you think about the Won Jack Man story? Look at the video of Jim Kelly talking about Bruce. I was in my Mid teens when Bruce died..... May I ask how old you are in this relation. Again I tend to believe those greats who knew him, not those who never met him. Jim Kelly was a great fighter, He won world championships. Robert Wall was a great fighter, he won National championships... Look at what Joe Lewis says about Bruce... He was voted the greatest fighter in Karate history. If these guys say he was unbeatable.... which they have, who are you or I to say otherwise. Again I put my trust in those who knew him.... not armchair warriors. ( not to say you are... just a quote.... no disrespect meant )

@@johnmcdonald5074 Tournaments back then were bullshit no-or-light-contact points "fights". What the heck is "behind the scenes"? Faith-based martial-arts? The key word is EVIDENCE. There's NONE for a real fight against a respectable opponent. Take a Critical-Thinking class: It's not my job to prove that there WEREN'T any secret fights, it's YOUR job to prove that there WERE. Study-up: Won Jack Man was the most junior kung Fu teacher in San Fransisco. The others MADE him fight Bruce. The Sacrificial lamb. His reputation is non-existent. Losing to Bruce is ALL we know about him. Jim Kelly was a kata practitioner & points-'"fighter" . He was Bruce's STUDENT. Are you familiar with master-student psychology? You "put (your)trust" in the stories that reaffirm what you WANT to believe, "not" logic , common sense, & evidence.

@ Steve Ferry I don't think you're a fan because you don't do respectful research and keep regurgitate and try to convince everybody he was no fighter. You basically discredit him. True fans don't that after first do some deep research. There are enough people know Bruce Lee can fight and can compete with the best of them. Both Joe Lewis and Norris were national champions and can't deal with Bruce Lee's speed and accuracy. That's the truth. Joe Lewis contradicts in his statements, in other words flip flops. At the end of the day , witnesses saw Joe after training with Bruce Lee Joe won 11 bouts. Lee made an impact on Joe. Bruce was superior to both these guys. That there already says alot how Superior Bruce Lee was. And you're so many Bruce Lee threads saying the same old sh%t you becoming full of shit.

Great interview. Mr. DeMile has a quality about him that is increasingly rare, and that is, he is completely, and immediately, believable. I had just listened to him in a shorter video, in which he said Bruce Lee could beat him or any of his peers in professional street fighting --- guys weighing 225 -- 245 lbs. He said that none of them would have a chance against Bruce Lee. It was such a tragedy that we lost him so early in his life.

This man's videos, describing Bruce Lee's fighting abilities, to me, seem to be very credible. He was a large, strong, experienced fighter, obviously with some ego. He made no bones about the fact that Bruce could handle him like he was a school kid. I don't claim to know whether some of these fighters who say they could have beaten Bruce Lee, could, or couldn't have beaten him, but I wouldn't have bet against him. It is easy to make statements like that when Bruce Lee is gone.

The truest humility is to "humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up," - Jamee 4:10. From all I can make out, Bruce believed in himself, as this is what he said when asked about religion. He was a self absorbed, self-defense artist, and an absolutely great one, at that. But did he ever surrender his life to Jesus Christ? I don't know - but what can be gleaned from what's out there, it doesn't appear so. The fruit of the Spirit described in Galatians 5:22,23 is this - "love, joy, peace, longsuffering, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, meekness, and self-control or temperance, against which there is no law" - so that, you might fulfill the law of love Jesus spoke of - "to love the Lord thy God with all your mind, body, and heart, and love your neighbor as yourself," based on Christ' sacrificial love for us, dying for us on the cross, that the sins of the whole world would be forgiven - for ALL choosing to believe in him. I don't know if this was true for Bruce. It is for me. My life is forfeit, and to me, as it was for other Christians in their walk as described in the Bible - "To live is Christ, to die is gain." I know not whether Bruce had "the peace which surpasses all understanding," CHRIST RISEN, and us forgiven. I hope you do.

Jeff Lardizabal .....i thought about that question for a long time till i started to know about christianity and what Jesus did for all of us on the cross. Bruce is def Not where many think he is...he was a flat out atheist in saying he has no time for that...meaning god. He was young and like anyone young and arrogant guy he never got to know Jesus. He was with his mistress when he died...he died in sin. No one can get to heaven if they dont surrender...accept and confess to him. We are all sinners without many knowing and cannot save ourselves without Jesus.

@Robd collector With all due respect, people from all walks of life, both young and old from all religious denominations die at a very young age and others in later years for many different reasons. The spirit never dies, it simply takes on another form, perhaps another body. Energy can never be destroyed, it simply changes form. Now after many thousands of years, ponder this 🧐 ... Jesus' childhood nor adolescence is ever mentioned in the Bible. 😳 How Can That Be?!!! 🤔 At what age did he learn to walk?!! 🤔 You mean, he was never a kid?!! 😳 He didn't play with other kids?!! 🙄 Was he a good teenager or a bad one?!! 🤔 Did he have a girlfriend?!! 🤨 Those who know are not telling. 🤫

Learnt a few moves well enough to impress those who never knew what Chinese Kung Fu was ...backt hen MA was very fringe...you had to go to a Chinatown to learn Chiense Kung Fu...into the mid70's...maybe late 70's...when M was in it's infancy...when no one knew nunchucks was a Japanese weapon or that the 2 black sticks Lee used in Enter The Dragon were Filipino yet Lee was playing a Shaolin Monk/Chiense :))

According to the new Bruce Lee biography by Matthew Polly, James DeMille betrayed Bruce Lee and started a rival school in Seattle. They never reconciled. He should be ashamed of exploiting his broken connection to the master he backstabbed.

Me thinks Bruce was engaged in hanky panky when he passed away and what may have done him in, contrary to popular belief, was some stamina pills he may have taken to knock the boots off Ms. Ting Pei. Those pills may have reacted negatively in his system and perhaps affected his heart as well as his brain. That's just my opinion. But naaahhh, that story is too contiversial.

With all respect i have for Polly, his book is well done and i give him the highest credit, but he portrayed this subject in the bio very one sided. DeMile himself stated exactly the same story over the years, be it in the 80s, 90s, 00s or 10s years, and he never changed it. The main reason why the Seattle guys like him, Glover, Ed Hart, Pat Hooks, LeRoy Garcia, etc, had no interest in training with Lee anymore was they felt the stuff he was teaching in 1963 was not as practical as the stuff they trained 1959-1962. In 1963, DeMile met a guy from Lee´s new group (Junfan Gung Fu Institut) and the guy asked DeMile why he stop training with Lee. DeMile told him he and the others felt Lee left out some very important things to make trapping work, like the center line or the close bijong among other things, and it was not so practical. Lee found out about this and got very angree, the story with the revolver is true. DeMile: "I asked Bruce why he left out important things to the new guys, and he replied: "Jim, why should i teach someone to beat me?" For me that was enough, he would never share his personal techniques with anybody. I can understand it, why you sould create a competitor?" But Lee gave Glover the permission to teach people, but he should not call it Junfan Gung Fu, so he called it Non Classical Gung Fu. Of course i can not check it out myself if its true, but DeMile states to this day he never met any Junfan or JKD guy who could trapping like the 1959-1962 guys, he dominated them easy when they tried. And as we all know, primary the JKD guys always say: "Trapping doesnt work", DeMile´s answer to this is: "Yeah, the way they do it sure, you head will get kicked off. But not the way we did it in the early days." So if, i say IF which means i speculate, its true what he said, that he never met any Junfan or JKD guy who was as good in trapping as the guys from Seattle, it would definately underline his opinion the trapping that Lee trained the 1959-1962 guys was more effective as the trapping he teached later. Polly should have mentioned this in his book, but for unknown reasons he didnt. Like the legendary procecutor Vince Bugliosi always said: "Dont matter how thin you make the pancake, there are always two sides." Polly portrayed it very one sided.

with all due respect but I am tired of he could but never did. Tried to search if DeMile had any MMA or other combat like fight and I do not see it. So to me it is inconclusive. I know for the fact that Bruce was one's carried on shoulders of Judo fighter. There was also Chuck who seems to being able to keep the end of his Bargen. So lets stop to create legends as they all eventually get beaten.

He would've been too "overqualified" to compete! which he'd be the definition of the word. nobody could even hit him... he already knew what you were going to try to do before you did it. like a punch, a grab. he was too far ahead of everyone in that era.

I seriously think Bruce Lee is overrated and his name is used by people teaching now claiming to be of his fighting lineage so it obviously suits their purpose and their pockets to carry the myth on! I have some experience by the way as I started Wing Chun in the UK around 1969 before the kung fu craze hit the UK. IMy teacher was Joseph Cheng and I kept it up for 10yrs and then changed to TKD reaching 3rd dan. I am now 67yrs old and still training, Shotokan at the moment. I was a street fighter for a long time until martial arts training calmed me down and have fought in full contact competition and I swear some of the great instructors I have seen in those years would eat Bruce for breakfast as well as the sycophants still cashing in on his name!"
