In our series on Controversial Issues related to women, we’ve come to our final topic of discussion - Leadership. How does Islam approach the idea of female leadership in societies? If Islam supports female leadership, then why are they not allowed to lead prayer congregations? To discuss these questions and more, we sit down with Dr. Shabir Ally.

This isn't about Doctor Shabir trying to "westernize" Islam as y'all are saying in the comment section. Like he said in the video ,this issue has been discussed since hundreds of years ago. Stop quoting weak hadith to promote your predetermined opinions and actually try to listen to what he is saying. Islam out of any other religion promotes equality among men and women .

What Dr. Sabbir technically skipped here on Queen of Seba is, Though she has had all the leadership qualities, Allah has denied her to rule, to lead further and subdued her at the disposal of Solaiman (as) i.e. ending her rule by letting her exit via Solaiman (as). Regarding the reference of women Imamah, Dr. Sabbir failed to say all sahaba (ra), majority of aleems and ulamahs, 99.99% or even more - has suggested and understood that Women has no position of leadership in society and or in imamah of Muslim masses. He referred some individual and their book without naming. Moreover, an individual and book of a writer with arguments - is not a reference when one illustrates a fatwah on Islam. Quoting Ibn Taimiyah (ra) once, does not explain what was the basis or context and what Ibn Taimiyah (ra) really said. Furthermore, Dr. Sabbir conveniently ignored dozens of ayats and hadiths that has clearly distinguished the roles and responsibilities of men and women in family and society and khilafah including issues of mahrum. And it is evident that the mighty God by His wisdom legislated that the women should not be in the leadership positions. I am sorry to say that it is increasingly evident that Muslims living in west and or fearful of western masters are continuously compromising their deen and suggesting something that is more aligned to Liberal Political Ideologies of today than the Ideologies of Mohammad (sa) and his Companions. Probably so Rasulullah (sa) asked his followers not to live so close to a non Muslims from where he may smells the cooking food of the non Muslims. May Allah bless the brothers of West to understand and an way out of the west for the sake of deen; specially at a time when the countdown of nuclear bombing is ticking on the heaven above and horizon.

Well said. These weak and ignorant so called Muslims need to wake up and ask the folowing questions: Why did God never send a female prophet? Why did Allah SBW said the translation of: If you need 2 witnesses you can have 2 men or one man and 2 women, and He explained why - in case one of them goes astray the other one would remind her. Why shibba did not continue as the leader of her people rather she ended under the authority of Solomon. Why did the prophet SAW said what translates: No people elect a woman as their leader they will not have success. Etc....can state many many reasons why it is not appropriate for women to lead in the mosque. If you put a women as mosque leader what would you do when she become impure.

There is nothing more distracting than sitting/standing behind a bunch of men in Jummah. Don't get me started about all of the double standards at the masjid. And none of it is Qur'anic. I'm tired of hearing the argument that a woman's voice is distracting for adhan and Qur'an recitations. Men's voices can be distracting too. Men's bodies can be just as distracting. It's just sexist rhetoric as an excuse to put women in an inferior position. If women are in positions of power and authority, it is better in all aspects of society. Dr. Shabir always seems to have a well thought out explanation of what's in the Qur'an and what's not with different possibilities of interpretations. MashAllah. He has referred to the Quran which does not prohibit women from holding leadership. Your complaint is that he should mention scholars and or hadith to prove his opinion. I will refer you to two Quranic verses, the first one is addressed to the Prophet, "Why hast thou forbidden that which Allah has made lawful" (The Quran 66:1). Clearly, not even the Prophet can forbid that which Allah has made lawful! So any Hadith forbidding female leadership would be in contradiction to the Quranic verse praising the Queen of Sheba as an able ruler. The second verse says, "Rabbis and monks determined what was lawful and what was not instead of God" (The Quran, 9:31). The scholars are the "rabbis and monks" referred to in the verse. We can respect the medeival scholars for their learning but they lived in different times in completely different societies with a mindset reflecting those times. Learning and knowledge moves forward and does not remain stagnant. We have to understand Islam in light of the Quran and with the conditions existing in our societies today.

Being shy and ashamed of are different things. Shyness is part of Imaan. Satr of a man is from navel to knee. Men can show the rest of the body. But do you accept an Imam just covering the satr. Let alone Imam men won't be able to go out of home covering just 'satr'. It is shyness. It's not like he is ashamed of something. Same thing applies to women. When a man is shy to buy undergarments from a place where even men are watching. It's not even about undergarments it's about periods. So she shouldn't be ashamed of but shyness is perfect.

The Arab society in 7th century CE (at the time of the Prophet) was such that the state provided no police forces to maintain law and order and so it fell on individuals to provide for their own defence. Hence men, being stronger then women, were able to do so to some extent. Also societies were agrarian, and the lack of machinery made farming a job that required strength. There were few opportunities for women to have gainful employment, so husbands or fathers provided support. As the Quran says neither male or female are superior to the other, except in so far as males provide protection and sustenance to the females. In the same way that in some societies rich people provide sustenance to the poor through charitable contributions or trained soldiers provide protection to the weak, but that does not mean that either of these groups are superior to the poor and the weak! In today's societies, in most countries, the state provides protection to its citizens, while at the same time firearms make physical strength irrelevant. Also most jobs today do not require physical strength but are more cerebral in nature. Hence women can perform such jobs as well as men can, depending on education and training. With large numbers of women in the work force they make a contribution to family incomes, and in some cases may make more of a contribution then the husbands. So in today's societies there really is no difference between men and women in terms of protections that they can provide or earnings that they make. Why should either male or female have superiority over another, since the Quran clearly states the two reasons why men have a degree of superiority over women! Now if a woman is contributing more to the family income then clearly she would have more of a say then the husband, and that is but fair! Understand the Quran with intelligence and do not follow mindlessly the scholars of yesterday! As Allah says,"The words of your Lord are complete in its truth and justice. Nothing can change His words - He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing. If you obeyed most of those on earth, they would lead you away from the path of Allah. They follow nothing but speculation - they are merely guessing" (The Quran, 6:115). Finally, Allah says, "Rabbis and monks determined what was lawful and what was not instead of God," (The Quran, 9:31).

There are small groups among Muslims who are raising these "issues", and they are seemingly inspired by Western thought such as secularism and feminism et al. Fact of the matter is, if you believe it is acceptable for women to lead public prayer, then by all means go for it. Nobody can stop those who wish to do so. However if you don't believe it is acceptable for women to lead public prayer (as is clearly the case with the vast majority of Muslims), then let it be. The problem arises with the very small minority who want to enforce their "women"s rights" beliefs on the majority. I'm not going to pray behind women, as is my right. Neither will I force others to pray behind men if they believe it's important to, and want to pray behind women. I will just not join them. I wish to be extended the same courtesy. So in a nutshell, if you want to have women leading prayers because it is important to you, or it forms part of your aqidah somehow then establish congregations where you can do so, and it won't impact those of us who don't believe such and don't wish to do so.

I love how uneducated people always wants to blame the "Western thought" or "feminism" to point out what is wrong within their society. Today's Muslim has nothing to do with prophets' time. They took many people's rights because that is what "Islam teaches" in order to use it to oppress as a mean to take advantage of people, without the people even realising it because they use propaganda (through their scholars and sheikh to spread theinformation they wanna spread). Western is not a perfect society, but Muslim countries became worse because of their misuse of the quoran. I truly believe that the fact that they're countries with extreme poverty and oppression because they lost the true meaning of Islam. Stop blaming the other for your sins... Acknowledge your wrongs and change them for the better. As long as Muslim countries rely on corruption, sexism, discrimination (because that is what "the quoran and hadiths" says) you cannot blame other countries!! That is called hypocrisy, a true Muslim would know that it is a sin. So it is our duty to get out of that vicious circle, and not be afraid to get out of our boundaries and see the world as it really is. Use your own brain not what most people/muslims think!!!

Er.....you Stated she ( Se’ba ) Stated she would conform ( to Solomon’ beliefs ) AND “ became a Believer “. No where is it said/written she AGRED that Only Muhammad’s Allah’s ONLY & The Last Profit...come down to CORRECT. The Words Of Jews , Christians, Hindu, Buddha, etc.. So she really DIDN’T “ become “ a Muslim. And if she Did- she would have relinquished her kingdom & title to the Caliphate & And a “ Man “, wear a Full Burka, become his fourth wife, have her 10 year old daughters circumcised & in an arranged Maria get. Right?

And when the word muslim is used it doesn't necessarily refer to the followers of Mohammed pbuh, but it could also refer to people who are followers of the messengers of Allah, the god of the Torah, Bible, and Quran.

You obviously don't know much about Islam! If Queen Sheba became a muslim she would 1. Not have to relinquish her kingdom and title as there is no bar for a female ruler. In Islamic history there have been female rulers and today a number of muslim countries have female heads of state (the US has not ever had a female head of state in its history), 2. Not have to wear a "full burka" as nowhere in the Quran is there a requirement to do so, 3. Not have to become anyone's "fourth wife" (I don't know where you are getting this from), 5. There is only a requirement for males to be circumcised, but no requirement for female circumcision, 6. No requirement either for arranged marriages. The Prophet's first wife Khadija (who was 15 years older then him) proposed to him, and it certainly was not an arranged marriage!

First of all there are hadiths classifed as "sahih" but are very doubtful! Secondly it is unlikely that the Prophet would have said this as it is in direct contradiction to the Quran which praised the rule of Queen of Sheba. Finally even if the Prophet said that, we know from the Quran that the Prophet could not know the future, so his statement may be true for his time but certainly not for other times.

So even if the Hadith is clear then what the Prophet is saying is that no nation will prosper as its head. But we know from the Quran that the Prophet did not have knowledge of the future, so his statement could be true during his time but not necessarily true in the future!
