For those who weren't aware, Salpeter collapsed on the course. Mazuronak passed her at 2:08:16, and you can see Salpeter being treated by the medical staff, sprawled on the ground.

When doing their rowing race across the Atlantic James Cracknell asked Ben Fogle what he thought about whilst rowing. Ben Replied "My family, Home, My wife" then asked "What do you think of?" James replied "Winning!" ............that's pretty much tells you the mindset of someone that could achieve enough in a sport to compete at the Olympic level.

Marathon running strategy feels almost paradoxical in that in the first ~20 miles, you can meander around, drop your water and bend to pick it up, etc. and yet not suffer any noticeable penalty, especially if you can sprint and catch up with your pace group. It’s almost as if the body forgets about small bursts of exertion in those effectively warm-up first ~20 miles, however if you exert yourself too much early on, you will lose. This trade-off makes sense when the benefit of drafting in a peloton significantly outweighs trying to push it alone. Yet we all the time see marathoners like in this race who lead the race starting pretty early on for whom every lost second because of any inefficiency - including not pushing their body occasionally just a little more in the first ~20 while staying under their body’s “forgotten exertion” limit - directly translates to finish time penalty. It’s crazy how well you need to study and learn about your own body to know how to push yourself optimally over most of a marathon distance.

You'd think they'd be given maybe five or ten minutes to make sure they're in ok physical condition following running in marathon in blazing heat before they're dragged around by photographers. It's rather dangerous to do this, even if you're the best in the world, I'd think they should be given a moment.

Why was so much emphasis placed on someone called Salpeter? Having allowed herself for whatever reason to fall 56 seconds behind the lead group her medal chances were over. You can't help being amused by the attention given to her by the commentators. Is it because she was running for Israel? In those conditions attempting to run at her speed to try to catch the leading group could only have one outcome: the collapse at 2.08.16

Extremely humid & hot conditions favour south and east Asian, southern European and eastern North American runners. African runners, who mostly live at altitude under dry temperate conditions, are naturally disadvantaged, but prevail regardless. For all, it is sad to see them running half a minute per mile slower than they normally would, because of the cruelly unfavourable conditions.

That course would be boring A F, winner was the one who could zone out of knowing they were running 7 k laps for a marathon. Pace was slow A F, winer just sat back and pounced at the end, a world championship shouldn’t be ran in + 2.3o time

@@coachcarter8238 What was wrong with the Atlanta course? The hills? I can promise you the athletes weren't running in 90 deg heat.
