There are some young people who could vote in the General Election, but don't plan to head to the ballot box on 8 June. There are others who want to vote but can't. What do the two sides have to say to each other?

How? You are wrong. You can not vote and complain about the system and hence all outcomes that will come from within that system, as your reason for not voting can be because of complaints with the system.
@xTammyDLx
@xTammyDLx 7 жыл бұрын
Voting doesn't give you some special right or power to complain, you have no idea why people don't vote and for what reasons. Even if the reason is laziness, you can and should always complain it's how things get changed and we make progress. We live in a democracy, you just argued against the basic principles behind freedom of speech. If something affects you, complain about. Complaining is the first step towards change.

However, if you have an issue with a party, the only way you can do anything to implement change is by going out and voting. You can complain until you're blue in the face, but unless you go out and vote you aren't going to change anything.

The idea of the rotten bunch of apples is slightly skewed. It would be more realistic to imagine you had a bunch of rotten apples, and you *had* to eat one of them. You would pick the least rotten. What he's suggesting is that if he doesn't choose one, he won't have to eat it, which is wrong, if you get the worst party, it's like eating the most rotten apple, just because you didn't want to eat any of them
@DrunkMurray
@DrunkMurray 7 жыл бұрын
yeah but to follow on from that anology, if you decided not to pick any of the apples and had one picked for you, would it be justified for someone to say to you "you can't complain about how bad these apples are because you didn't pick an apple". What if you knew in future you'd have to pick from a bag of rotten apples over and over again but you knew that if you actively told the people providing the apples you weren't happy with the choices (by spoiling the ballot) there may be a chance in future of apples that weren't rotten for you to pick from? To me it's totally justified to not vote for any party, by voting for people you hate you are telling politicians that you are happy with the choices being given and we should just continue.
@isaacmiddleton9711
@isaacmiddleton9711 7 жыл бұрын
That makes sense, but while I understand what you're saying, I'm not really sure what else there is that isn't already being offered. If you have right-wing views, go for the most right wing party, left-wing go for the most left etc. If you feel that your views are further to either side, then voting for the party closest to that will push the country in that general direction, which I think you would agree is better than going in the opposite direction you feel it should be taking. Another thing is that while you may not want to vote for any of the major parties, your local candidates may be better or worse for your area, so even if you aren't sure who you want to vote for, or you don't feel that any of the parties represent your personal opinions, there is likely a candidate that you agree with to some extent.

I don't think it's fair to say that a protest vote isn't a real vote. It shows engagement with the political system but also says you are not happy with the system or the choices provided. In other countries such as France there is a none of the above box, but in countries without this, a protest vote is the best way to show that you aren't apathetic, but you feel disillusioned.
@AntoniaBeese
@AntoniaBeese 7 жыл бұрын
A vote is not symbolic though its real and it can deeply affect the course of your country. Its naive to vote for something way extremer than your own mindset and then to be shocked when your vote was really counted. There's a time and a place for protest and for tantrums, but it isn't when literally peoples livelihoods or even lives are on the line - as they always are when talking politics.

Yes, but what are the parties going to do about it? Nothing. They don't know the exact reason you're spoiling your paper. The best thing to do, if you don't agree with the main parties in your area, is to vote with a minority party you most agree with, which may shift the larger parties to be more similar to claim some votes

In Australia, you HAVE to vote and I get so mad when people who go and get their name marked off and get to the ballot and all they've done is draw a dick on the paper, surely their time would be better served actually bloody voting?? Or perhaps Brexit wouldn't have happened if all the people had to vote. Surely that's something to think about. People who have the right and don't use it are spitting on all the people who came before them who got them the right to vote.

Spoiling your ballot paper is a completely valid choice. What if you thought none of the parties should be in charge? Spoiling a ballot paper is not the same as not voting because you are showing that you would vote but don't believe any of the parties are deserving. Being forced to vote for a party is similar to not getting the choice to vote at all
@Amyduckie
@Amyduckie 7 жыл бұрын
In Australia, where I live, it really isn't. You don't have a choice, you legally have to vote. A protest vote is as close as you can get to not voting and suffering no consequences. Most people that spoil their ballot haven't done the research into the parties and their options and just don't want to vote. Having spoken to many a person that has spoiled their ballot, they just don't want to vote and wish they had the right to exercise it. Me, I say do the damn research and pick and damn party/person/whichever and do the damned adult thing and pick one. In other countries without compulsory voting, fair enough. But it doesn't work that way where I live. I still think not exercising your right to have a say (and you're not giving an opinion, most of the time, just that you know how to draw penises), what right do you have to complain about the government that comes in from the election that you didn't have a say in? Not trying to be rude or anything, but it's a genuine question.

StarryMuffins I personally wasn't old enough to vote in the brexit vote since I'm not quite 17 yet and I do really hate that people just don't vote all I'm trying to say is that you can't say that not voting is the same as spoiling a ballot paper as one is laziness while the other is a political choice and is making a stand to say i will exercise my right to vote by showing up while not supporting parties I don't agreed with
@Amyduckie
@Amyduckie 7 жыл бұрын
It's a fair point, but what if the people not voting could have made a difference for the better? I just can't help but wonder that all the people who chose not to vote in the Brexit referendum and the US election could have potentially made a huge difference. If it's still the same result, okay, but at least you have a better idea of things. I suppose it's the potential that makes me mad and the fact that people aren't exercising a right that a lot of the time is hard won, it seems insulting. As a person who is part of a country that has to hear about Brexit and Trump almost bloody daily, as my country is an ally of theirs, I do really wish people would vote and use the knowledge that is readily available to them to do some research and pick a party/person, based on that knowledge, y'know?
@K01H74
@K01H74 7 жыл бұрын
Amy Woods Well isn't that the point of a 'right'? Once you legally have to vote it isn't a right, it's a law. You have to follow it. Then, would you not say that people should have the right to not vote? Like any other right, such as (at least in America) the right to bear arms, you can choose to utilise it or not and that's your business. I still think though that if you do have an opinion you should vote. Throwing it out there, I don't live in America I just used that example for simplicity.

I will never cast a vote EVER in my entire life. I will die with having voted politically a total of 0 times. And anyone who has a problem with that can SMD. At first, I really hated that my choices upset so many people, but after such a long time of hearing about how awful I am because of it, it made me realize that there's nothing that makes me happier than pissing off a bunch of belligerent, close-minded, opinionated, politic-crazed lunatic that care more about one persons uninformed, confused and/or reluctant choice than they do about that persons actual FEELINGS AND OPINIONS. Imagine you have a roommate, and you wanna get a flat screen tv, but expect your roommate, who doesn't care if you get the tv or not, to help pay for it. Like, "Wtf? That's YOUR TV bro. I don't need that, I'm fine with what I've got going on for me...." For years I've tried to understand how it all works, and politics just aren't my thing. I can't grasp the vast majority of what is happening, and I assure you, it is not because of a lack of intelligence..... In fact.... If anything, it's because of how my mind works that I can't bring myself to vote, and if you're really that shallow and fucked up of a person that you would damn near curse or wish a non-voter ill, then I will return in suite.

You have a right not to vote, if you feel that your vote really will make no difference or you cannot make up your mind, then that is your decision. I personally will always vote, as I make sure to come to a decision, but I know many people who simply can't, especially with this election. I do think however, if you don't vote, any say you have on the outcome is hypocritical, as you didn't have a part of it. I also feel the same frustrations with people that wanted to vote and make a change but couldn't be bothered. TRY your best to vote, but you do not have to, that's your right. Just be willing to accept the consequences the same as everyone else (just because you didn't vote, doesn't mean you're free from the consequences that came with that government).

It's also about thinking long term. Most political opinions do fall on a spectrum (gov't vs. free market, is often the biggest one). The parties _are_ different in that respect, even if they might be perceived as clustering around the centre. If you are a libertarian Ayn Rand-type who thinks free market should do everything? Vote Tory (or maybe UKIP). If you are a Communist, vote Labour or Green. No party represents you perfectly, but by voting you sent + or - signals to the system. If Labour consistently won elections of the basis of being really left, they would get left-ier (same with Tories and free market). If you are in a safe seat, I would also say to think long-term. Seats do occasionally change hands. What determines whether an opposition campaigns there is percentages, if over time dominant party vote share is declining in a seat, it might be worth it. By not voting because it's a safe seat, you are making it seem safer than it actually is. And if all else fails, *think about specific issues* what is your stance on GM? On Nuclear Energy? On HS2? Parties/candidates generally have statemets on these things in their manifestos (or track records). Controversial topics often lead to stark disagreements. Pick something you care about and vote based on that.

If you think about it like this, you are one person who has a vote and it's meaningless because it's only one right? But he is also one vote, and her, and him and so many other people that didn't use their votes because they thought it was meaningless. But, if you put all of it together, it can come up to hundreds of votes and surely that isn't meaningless anymore...

its not just about who ends up winning the seat in your constituency if for example a certain area has been a tory stronghold for decades but labour voters do turn up to the polling stations and vote labour that lets LABOUR know they have support there and therefore can increase campaigning in that area etc if you NEVER vote this will NEVER happen. They won't know you even exist there and therefore nothing will ever change in your constituency. Not voting is one of the ultimate abuses of privilege in a democratic society. I wish more of our generation of 18-24 year olds would turn up because then parties would see that we DO care and we are aware.

He said he didn't want to pick the best of the bad bunch, clearly doesn't particularly like any party. And if that's his stance let him spoil the ballot. He doesn't have to vote Labor just bc other people don't get to.

I wasn't yet 18 during the American election for Trump or Hilary. I disliked every single possible party, and every single possible person. Not only that but sometimes I felt like... why couldn't there be better candidates present. Why were savvy people considered instead of people known for their intellectual prowess, a humanitarian, a social Scientist, people who were appraised for their leadership skills and mental prowess, ever be included. (For example, same as why people believe the best singers should be famous, yet the singers who are famous, are because they too are just savvy.) Therefore I wasn't sad I couldn't vote, I was actually *relieved* I had the excuse of my age to those passionate and accusational. I'm just not really a fan of this society that I live in. I'd rather send a letter talking about how I wish there were better ways at the people picking the selection then just having them show up. I don't care to vote in the future (now that I'm 18) if I'm not passionate about whom I'm voting for.

Personally I always vote, only so I can comment on whats happening politically, which you don't really have a right to if you don't vote. I also think it's a waste of time for me to vote seems as I'm from a VERY safe seat area which is politically opposite to my own personal views. Annoying but it is what it is. I think that the brexit vote should have been lowered to 16, because these 16-17 year olds are some of the most affected by the outcome of the vote, they're one of the first generations going into university and the world of work with the outcome of brexit, so should therefore have a say. I've heard many people say that there's no point because young people don't care about politics and the turn out would be low, but what about those who are interested? What about those who do want to have a say in something that will massively affect their lives? These people are sitting their A Levels, so surely have enough intelligence to make a decision on this matter. I'm not saying this should be the case for general elections, however for something such as brexit, 16-17 year olds should have had the opportunity to have their say.

Our progenitors gave their lives in two World Wars so we could have the right to vote. In my opinion, refusing to vote rubbishes everything they fought and died for. I think our voting system should be modified to mirror the Australian system, where voting is compulsory and refusal to vote is punishable by a fine. If you don't like any of the candidates, you can vote for "None of the above". I don't know what would happen if "None of the above" wins, but it'll be interesting to find out.

They fought for the RIGHT to vote. With any right comes the freedom of choice to act upon the right or not. Freedom of speech is a right, but we don't expect that people always voice their true opinions in every situation, they also have the right to remain silent. In america currently, people have the right to bear arms, but saying to someone if they don't have a gun their ancestors fought for nothing is a ridiculous statement. Without the choice to act on a right, it is no longer a right it is an obligation. Secondly, do you not see how reckless it is to vote for a candidate you hate, one you believe will be terrible for the country, just because you don't like the opposition. Unlike people who opt not to vote, you are actively putting that person in a position of power. Someone who turns up to vote and spoils their ballot at least sends the message to politicians that their parties and policies have to change if they are to get more votes in future.

The one guy said that if there's a bag of bad apples and you have to choose the best of the bad batch, you still don't want to eat it. But the point of voting is that, in that analogy, you still have to eat one of the apples. You have no choice. So it's better to be able to choose the least rotten of the few than to leave it to chance and have a possibility of getting the most rotten apple of them all. *cough* trump *cough*
