Wonder Woman 1984 is Complete Garbage

Wonder Woman 1984 is here, an exciting action-packed romp through shopping malls, the Middle East, uh... a hydro-electric dam? Wait I thought this movie was going to have fun 80s locales? Why does everything look so drab and boring? Why is there a giant cat woman and OH MY GOD WHY IS THIS THING TWO AND A HALF HOURS LONG!?
Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to hell, as directed by Patty Jenkins and starring Gal Gadot. This is one of the most agressively stupid superhero movies we've seen in a long time, with a script that seems like it was written overnight in a Del Taco bathroom stall. As you watch this moronic movie, ask yourself some of the following questions:
- Why is there a magic dream stone wishing crystal in my superhero movie?
- Why is the villain a crappy salesman and not an ancient Roman demigod?
- Why is Cheetah in this movie? And why does she look so bad?
- Why does Wonder Woman have magic golden armor for no reason whatsoever?
- WHO APPROVED THIS GARBAGE!?

For me the funniest part, straight out of a Naked Gun movie, is when she learns to fly. She catches a plane, then fly for what seems to be a very long time. We see the day fading, she goes through a storm. Then she arrives... at her appartment... In the same city she was already in. That to grab her armor before going in the base she never heard about and has no way to know in any way. That's baffling !

@@MeltonCrest That's more a description of when Artemis temporarily wore the Wonder Woman costume. Diana has never been a kick ass first ask questions later Wonder Woman in her own comic book (certainly I don't recall anything in the 90s). There are some more recent alternative reality versions, such as in the Flashpoint Crisis DC Animation. She's more kickass in the Justice League Animated series too than her comic history. It's supposed to be about the lasso of truth's power of compulsion, which TBH, I didn't know was a thing in this movie until that last scene. WW could hv used her power of compulsion on Maxwell in the Egypt scene or White House scene and the film would hv been over in less than an hour. (If only!)

See there’s a difference between Diana Prince and Gal Gadot. SPOILER ALERT WW in that moment did something that embodies the true meaning of heroism in the comic book sense. She inspired. Heroes like Superman and Batman aren’t limited in their duties, they don’t just stop bullets, catch bad guys or lift up planes, they inspire people to be better than they currently are. It’s why Superman is the Man of Tomorrow. She didn’t snap Max’s neck in order to save the day, she gave him perspective, she reminded him who it was all for and inspired him to become better than his villainy. He let go of his pride and told his son the truth. As Uncle Iroh says, pride is not the opposite of shame but its source, only true humility is the antidote of shame. Gal Gadot is an actress locked behind a veil of fame and privilege. She was fallible and cannot admit it but Diana, as a fictional character can be, because in truth it costs nothing. This she can become that ideal. Or at least try to be.

@@zainhartono7193 thing is..... uhhhhh the new Wonder Woman in the comics don’t play that shit. And the Wonder Woman they made her in the previous movie and some what in this. Was the new one. The one that turns on the human the one that cares only about the fight. Hints all that post apocalyptic bull shit in justice league. Soooo ya this movie is shit they are taking bits and parts of different comics rewritten and due to outdated plots like this one. They can’t add all the other fucken hero’s in this and do shit like this. This is why marvel seems way ahead. Because they don’t step out of line. I say the closest thing was Spider man. And that’s because I assumed they thought they wouldn’t have him long. Giving Peter miles entire story line and dame there his back ground. But ya this makes it hard for them to think of another plot because then when they bring others it be said well where was that guy? Like Batman vs Superman they put Bruce in the city cool made sense to take Superman there..... hint the excitement leading up to the trash.

Exactly! This is an utter disgrace. You find way better scripts in fan-fic than this load of crap. That's the whole thing about these big studio releases! We get incredible independent films these days, but these crappy studio releases still get away making more money just by the power of advertising and star power. Over the last 3 years, WB has literally made a star out of Patty Jenkins even though she has very little to her credit. Her only well-known film, Wonder Woman (2017) had the script written by other people, the action directed by other people - she had very little to do and yet got all the acclaim for it and was made a superstar out of overnight. Then she gets a truck load of money to write this garbage that's literally worse than a stoner's rant. This movie has a $200M budget but couldn't even afford decent CGI. Where's all the money going?

I think the problem runs quite deep (we will need years to tease it all out). But from my perspective, seeing a movie that supposedly had a script, one that no film school would have accepted as evidence an aspiring screenwriter has promise (and thus should be accepted) is prima facie evidence of deep process problems. What the WW*4 result presents to me is the classic "But I took four hundred hours of footage!" (that Werner Herzog lamentingly deplores with his phrase "We are not garbage collectors") thinking they could simply edit the footage in post-production into a compelling story. Sorry -- that's not how storytelling works. If they wanted to make a compelling story, they should have revisited Hitchcock's process ("The movie is made --- before it is shot"). If, on the other hand, you just start shooting, making up stuff as you go (for whatever the stupid reason) you end up with nonsense like this. The CGI folks and those in the writers' room ("Hey writers! Here's some more loose ends! Please tie together!") must have been tearing their hair out at such a juvenile approach. As a result, we now have our first $200M masterclass illustrating every mistake filmmakers should seek to avoid --- all exemplified in a single film! I didn't think that was possible!
@danielsmithiv1279

Had a feeling this was a first draft script. About an hour and 30 minutes in, we barely learn that the God of Lies is involved. However, once i found that out, i realized that the God of Lies should've been the main villain all along and should've been present since the beginning, causing hell throughout the entire movie. Obviously, this would have caused the script to be rewritten from the groud up, but it would've been worth the time as the script wouldve gave Wonder Woman a decent plot and a good challenge that she deserved. In the comics Wonder Woman doesn't have any powers greater than a normal Amazon until after she leaves the island. She legitimately wins the contest allowing her to go to man's world _then_ her patrons grant her greater powers. This has the effect if showing that despite her powers she's still had to work to earn things at some point in her life, as opposed to just being better than everyone because of who she is.

@Jakob Berg I am not an authority on this but I think that Supes cape is supposed to made of a super fine fabric that is easily folded and squished under his clothes. In other words, his cape is form fitting enough to fold and fit under his clothes without causing noticeable bulges. In Wonder Woman's case, she is wearing a set of rigid armor and heavily armored boots. I'm not saying anyone is right or wrong, I'm just saying that in reality it would be much more conceivable to hide a fabric cape under clothes than a set of rigid body armor and armored boots. I have to admit the scene confused me when she popped out of the car with her armor on, I actually had to rewind the scene because I though I missed her putting the costume on.
@palaniuki
@palaniuki 3 жыл бұрын
@Jakob Berg To answer the double standard thing. For Sup' you're right, it makes also no sense when he has the cape supposed to be hidden. I don't remember how they treat that in the movies. But most importantly, the degree of acceptation depends on the all movie. The problem is on WW84 something destroys your suspension of disbelief every two seconds, so as a result we're more critics. Every movie has some parts that don't make sense, but if there are more pros than cons, we accept to be ok with it

The difference between the two is that the MCU (until phase 4) kept relatively close to their comic source material while the DCEU hasn't at all. When I see the tesseract in the MCU I know it's obviously supposed to be what the comics call the "cosmic cube". I have no idea what the hell the wishing stone in WW1984 is supposed to be and I know waaaay more about DC Comics than I do Marvel. Not to mention that Wonder Woman, Cheetah and especially Maxwell Lord are wildly different from their comics' inspirations. I can't believe that picked Maxwell Lord as a villain for a freaking Wonder Woman movie. I went and looked at every appearance he made in the comics and he and Wonder Woman had interacted *once.*

@@cityman2312 Ironic since Diana is Zeus' daughter which was kind of confirmed in the previous movie. Which kind of makes sense baffles me to this day. In fact out of the Trinity and groups in the DC universe, Wonder Woman and the Amazons seems get the short end of the stick of having their origins constantly changed, retconned etc. In some stories, Diana is said to be born out of clay like how the Amazons were made, or she could be the daughter of Hades or even Zeus. In some stories Amazons go out of their way to recruit women outside of Themyscira, or seclude themselves from the rest of the world because of their fear "man's world", or kidnap men and rape them, killing them afterwards, and if they bear a son, kill them too or send them off to work for Hephaestus. Like they can't decide the definitive origin for them and it constantly changes. And to me this movie highlights a lot of growing pains in adapting Wonder Woman because of how undefinitive she is and unrelatable she can be compared to Batman and Superman. Not saying she does not have amazing stories. Far from it. To me she doesn't on her own with Batman or Superman there to guide her or her stories are more outdated compared to the two.

What's also ridiculously stupid is just how vague and meaningless "apex predator" is without any context, and it's not like being an apex predator means being the strongest, most powerful, most resilient, etc. creature there is. Many ecosystems have a multitude of different apex predators. The shark might be an apex predator of the ocean, but so are dolphins. Dolphins can even kill sharks. Lions may be an apex predator of the savannas, but they also compete with other apex predators like leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, wild dogs, etcetera. Human beings are arguably _the_ champion, best of the best, apex predator. There is literally no living creature on this planet that humans couldn't hunt, stalk, and kill if they put their minds to it, so why would Barbara turn into a cat person if she's already in the form of the best apex predator the world has ever seen?

When the first Wonder Woman came out. James Cameron warned us of the dangers of heaping unwaranted praise on a movie so basic and undeserving of all those accolades. He reminded us of Ripley ,Sarah Conner ..and Buffy...all far better depictions of the post modern Bad ass Super Heroine....Most importatly still Jim warned of the dangers this self congragulatory ...fart smelling behaviour would inevivatebly lead to...and he was right. Wonder woman...the 2017 one desreves a 70 on rotten tomatoes at best. But golly gee....its the first watchable DC movie in a decade...so lets call it a masterpice. Now we see the folly of our righteous indignation...all that hot air got to Patty's head. Now we see....the Cheetah...RAAWwW

@@carybeweary7209 I'd say a flaw about that is just that it was basically like the world just had a bad dream. And dream sequences are usually a pretty big cop out. Like there were no repercussions for the story or the conflict and so it's like the movie just never happened at all. Hell, The bad guy has a happy ending after putting the world in the position to be completely destroyed. But since you brought up Jafar, even the kingdom would remember a giant red genie towering over Agrabah and Jafar was trapped in solitary to atone for what he did. I don't even know if the wishing stone exists at this point where you know the lamp in Aladdin is still very much a physical thing and can be found again by somebody.

My biggest problem is the twist. You want to know who should have been Ares? WWs boyfriend (can't remember his name). All the clues were there, he "randomly" crashed into the Amazonian island, bringing Germans so that the women would learn about the great war. He was there her whole time in London. In the trenches, he tried his best to convince Diana not to charge, to prolong the fight, but when she charged anyway, he had to follow, or else he would look suspicious. He convinced Diana not to kill the German General, and because of that hundreds die in a gas attack. Don't you see, all the clues were there, it would have been the perfect twist, but instead Ares was just the random old dude we met In London at the start.

@@steverogers6572 honestly, I can't remember a lot of Black Panther's storyline anymore but I'd say the majority of the computer animation was passable. I mean I could always blame people working from home on the effects and that their home rigs aren't as powerful as the studio ones but even the studio I work for provided rigs for people who's computers couldn't handle working on our Flash cartoons. But to me that just screams that they just pushed stuff out to meet a release window. Been seeing way too much of that lately and it's not just movies suffering from that state of mind.

@@devilsadvocate4081 Oh I'm not knocking the choreography of the Neo scene, it was a good scene and worked in context with the story of what the movie needed. It was just a bit jarring when I was watching and suddenly the characters turned into Hasbro plastic figurine stop motion at the drop of a hat lol
