You forget Gene Wilder’s Wonka has been a recluse for years, hiding in his locked down factory keeping a close guard on his secrets/recipes from his rivals (Slugworth, Fickelgruber, Prodnose) that have tried to steal it from him. It isn’t for nothing that the "edge" which we think about when we hear the name Willy Wonka doesn’t manifest itself until his later years (Chalamet’s Wonka is 19 while Wilder’s is 45) This movie literally sees him just fresh off the boat, poor and trying to make a name for himself, trying to introduce his chocolate to the world. At the end of the 1970s movie Wonka shows that same optimism/innocence that he had when he was younger, it’s when Charlie passes the "greedy test" and proves that there IS in fact good, honest people left in the world that he can pass his factory on to, it ties into his younger, optimistic self before he got driven mad by isolation in the factory

funny how this movie is so convoluted that it takes 20 minutes to explain, but the original story can be summarized in a few sentences

John Oliver had a great segment on his show about chocolate and how it's made, Those cocoa beans sit in a pit in the ground, covered in banana leaves while they ferment. And the fresh beans look gross, like bug larva.🤢 But it was very informative about how the poor cocoa farmers can't even afford a kit kat bar.

I watch the BBC original Ghost and had no idea Simon Farnaby was I writer for that show or Wonka. If they made this film into a series (mini series) it would have been great to build up to the villainous Wonka we know.

Great review guys. I actually really enjoyed the movie and loved seeing the fresh-faced inventor who would eventually become a bitter old recluse. This definitely seems like it was the first part to a more tragic middle and the original film is the 3rd, so to say. This definitely lays the groundwork with all of the "greedy wins over the needy" talk - especially since Wonka will eventually become distrustful of humanity and turn his factory into a fortress of solitude for years. I think that an "Empire Strikes Back" of sorts could really be the dark piece needed to fill the gaps and really show off the darkness of Wonka's mind.

Final thought why should it cost $125M to make a movie about a guy who wants to make chocolate? Hollywood budgets are so bloated ... Godzilla Minus One cost less than $15M!!

The set pieces, costume designs, music and special effects were amazing. I watched a documentary showing they actually created the whole city to look something like Europe. It's not CGI. I'm surprised the budget was only$125m.

You make a good point about why was the magic not used more effectively. And why did he set up shop at that particular location? I think the answer may lay in the idea that his magic works best where it is needed the most.

Guys thanks for reviewing this…I think that I’m understanding why Hollywood is constantly remaking movies OVER & OVER & OVER, so we as older people from the 40’s-80’s can not only aggravated, but the youngins can be even more confused as to what we were watching then LMAO. They clearly tried it when they casted Timothee Chalamet…he’s young and relevant now…so I guess kids would better understand and recognize him more than if someone much older were to replay this role.🤷🏾♂ THANKS for reviewing yet another box office bomb in order for us to save our money and spend it elsewhere. ❤❤

The movie gave "musical‐to-movie" vibes but not with too much singing, but enjoyable enough. Let go of all previous storylines. *the little travel factory was adorable..like throwback childhood cute

Love u guy’s channel. It’s always my first stop after watching any film. I didn’t interpret the end scene as Willy literally building his factory with magic. I thought it was just a creative visual way to show us that he eventually realized his dream of building the factory. We can assume he prob hired people to actually build it. Just my thought. Also I think slugworth probably didn’t care if their dead rotting bodies contaminated the chocolate. He was so vile that he would have sold that chocolate anyway.

Loved the movie! For me it was a refreshing twist after a strange Johnny Depp adaption. Great original soundtrack. My kids loved it-perhaps that was more of the target audience on this anyways.

Maybe wonka s chocolate was better cuz it was more pure cacao beans, however that makes a chocolate more bitter, so I think Keegan MIchael Key actually wouldnt prefer purer chocolate over regular milk chocolate. I know cuz people keep giving me their bitter organic chocolate to eat cuz its "healthy" or whatever

Really on the fence with this one after seeing the trailer, so I didn't bother waiting before watching this video. Told a friend I would go if he wants to see it, but I wouldn't be surprised if FJ's take on it turns out to be at least as entertaining as the movie.

I find this movie much more entertaining than I expected. I rewatched Tim Burton’s remake yesterday. I like Paul King’s take more. This one is more like a fun and touching musical for families and children. The visual is also very cool. Timothee can sing. And the Pure Imagination song is a nice surprise to me as the 2005 remake did not have it.

Glad you didn't like it either. I thought this film was so boring. Too much laundromat and not enough fantasy factory, etc. People are happy to fly into the air, without knowing how they will get safely back down, but riot and burn his shop down when their hair turns colors????

I know this is a prequel and probably have good actors but Ive never been so bored with Hollywood, infinite rebooting machine. It was absolutely unnecessary and unrequested, there's so many good novels that have never been adapted yet they produce this movie that already have 2 excellent iterations.

Haven't seen the movie yet but I imagine it takes a while for him to turn to the Wonka we're familiar with. Some people aren't evil from birth to adult. Also I'm seeing a lot of comments lamenting that they don't show how he got the magic to make the chocolate but would you like to see that? Like a whimsical movie length version of a food network show? 😆

I like Timothee and he is a good actor but (from what I've seen in previews) I don't think he is the right fit for Wonka. Love or hate his performance at least Depp made Wonka HIS verison. To me, Timothee is just trying to repeat Gene's character beat for beat and that's just not him. But when I see the film I'll know for sure - I like Hugh Grant so he is worth it for me! Edit: Wouldn't it be fitting if Wonka's father was a magician who taught him magic, and his mother taught him to cook/make chocolate. Then, Wonka learned to combine both his parents lessons into his own magical sweets.

The whole thing feels flat. The jokes don't land like they should and the dialogue feels twee and forced at times. Visually it looked good but it's a massive disappointment after the brilliant Paddington. I wasn't expecting it to be great but it's not even decent.

I think this is just a property where the first one nailed it, Gene Wilder was just too good and iconic to ever beat and the whole charm of the original was that it was a little scary and a lot weird where part of the fun of the movie was how bonkers the factory was. If you are going to do a prequel, one would think the thing they would explain is the how and why of how the factory was so weird and what about Wonka made that happen. But it looks like they also just decided to skip past that part. I still think this will do well with kids though who will not care about any of those things.

I'm with Nick all the way! I saw this film and didn't like it. I'm a big '71 Wonka fan and this film was glossy garbage. Nothing made sense, the songs were bad, and Chalamet was a weak Wonka. We deserved a better prequel than this.

i would have rather seen an industrial espionage thriller from how they stole from him or tried to. the lengths they'd be willing to go, maybe even murder. tim's wonka seemed far too much like a bottom to be wonka or a successful businessman in any universe. i hope for a radical shift in the other direction when these lame trends pass.

😮 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was my absolute favourite book as a child. The Gene Wilder movie is simply a classic, albeit Dahl didn’t like it. But I’ve never once considered Wonka to be a villain. That’s very strange to me. Perhaps the issue is, as with the Burton movie, attempting to humanise such a fantastic character is doomed to failure. It’s like trying to explain a joke, it kills it. The original story itself is a morality tale of horrible people getting their comeuppance. Wonka certainly doesn’t hate children; that’s just…not true. He’s amoral certainly, if looked at that way. But I don’t think he’s the sort of character who can be psychoanalysed by any realistic standards as ‘good’ or ‘bad’. He’s a Trickster figure, mercurial and anarchic. Possibly an anti-hero. But definitely not a villain.

I've only watched 5 reviews of yours and I don't know your past or vocation but Loving how you seem to, at least in my 5 watched, stress the screenplay. Without that, normally the movie is not quite great to say the least.
