Wonolangan Field Trains

Жыл бұрынWonolangan had a 100% Orenstein and Koppel fleet and the only one of interest, the small Mallet, was out of use by the time enthusiasts arrived. The field lines were accessible but it seems only Ross Sadler saw loaded trains here and even those in this clip from 1980 are arriving at the mill. Within a few years, diesels had arrived and steam was restricted to the mill yard.

At 1:29, judging from the curve of the train, it seems that the canes came from the South East or the far East cane fields. There were 2 level crossings on the main road to Gending East of the mill, one near the Dringu market and one further East. My grandad used to take me to Dringu market and waited for hours just for me to see a cane train arriving from the cane fields before we came back to my grandad's house in Gending. Whereas for the far East level crossing, the cane train normally came back at night, and the cane cutting takes place on the fields right besides the main road to Gending.

These are precious memories and thanks so much for sharing them . As I have said to Rob in a recent e-mail, I don't know why I was so stupid not to go back in 1980 and make a much bigger thing of this mill. There were plenty of daylight trains and it was almost in walking distance of Probolinggo. By the time I went back a couple of years later, the steam locos were only shunting the yard.

@@rosssadler3199 It may be bad news for you, but it's also understandable. Diesel in operation is more efficient than steam. At least diesels don't have to take up water every now and then.

@@theunderrated86 Yes, I know as someone who is ticketed to drive both types of engines. Diesels don't need boiler washouts once a week, they've much better starting torques, easier to maintain, etc., etc. But we can all be a bit nostalgic, can't we?! The success of the preserved steam railways worldwide and general interest in sites such as this one, proves that we're not alone. Thanks again for your interest in this video.

Not sure what you're trying to say. Panji sugar factory was near Situbondo not Probolinggo as was Wonolangan. And its track was laid to 600mm gauge not 700mm. These scenes are DEFINITELY from Wonolangan,

Sorry, not to my knowledge, I last saw the train run in 1988 and got a video camera in 1991.
