Today in my video i will be carving a wooden bowl for my wife. I had a large oak limb fall in the woods behind my house and I have plenty of firewood for this coming winter so I thought I could use part of it for the bowl. I may try to find more ways to use that limb it in some more videos to come. Check out the video to see how it turned out!

Love this. But you scared me to death with that circular saw part.

I was very nervous using the saw that way. I was trying to be as careful as I could. Thanks for the comment If I make another one I will find a safer way to do it!

This gentle man is amazing. Always in for a project and always joyful. Something about this man that’s special. No, not that kind of special. He’s an overachiever. Ohhh Simon, ya scare me when your hands get so close .

Nice bowl! I've carved a few dough bowls and most folks do not realize the amount of work required to make one. I do have one suggestion: When you started your chainsaw, the blade was rather close to your leg and the pull on the rope tends to pull it even closer. Consider this: Hold the saw by gripping the cross bar with your right hand, left hand on the pull rope. Hold the saw sort of in front of you and then swing it toward your right (and away from you) as you pull the rope. This tends to move the blade away from you, and because the saw is already moving away, it would take a serious backfire, or whatever, to reverse its motion. Think about it. -Old dude. Not a pussy.

Where did you learn all of this? I know that some projects are new to you but, who taught you the basics? You’re super talented! It came out lovely! Simply amazed at how you do this!? It’s great 👍

My dad spent a lot of time teaching me when I worked with him as a kid. From him I learned everything I needed to know to get started. I love trying new things. I research before I start something knew, but I always have what my dad taught me to fall back on!

that came out beautiful thanks for sharing! I have been doing similar work and it is really cool to see someone else doing things the same way I am. There are many traditional wood turners out there that share their videos but wood carvers are slightly less common. Thanks again :)

Thanks for watching! since this video I have made several more of these and have improved the process to be a bit safer. I no longer use the circular saw for carve out the center of the bowl. As I mill the wood with my chainsaw I used it to also cut groves to hollow out the very rough shape of the bowl. the with a hammer I knock out the excess. Here is a more recent one I made: studio.kzfaq.info3Xkbn7sbfVE/edit

@@SimonSaysDIY that is epic! I'll go have a watch. I'm waiting on a disc for my grinder to do similar though atm I too use my chainsaw. The grinder discs just look like they might give me a bit more precision to get closer to the final clean up. For now tbh I do a lot of Chisel work more because for some reason I enjoy it lol and then move onto either sanding discs on the grinder if it fits, or the rotary tool with carbide burrs. But yeah, your vid really got me inspired and a bunch more chuncks of wood found their way into the shop lol.

@@SimonSaysDIY actually something else I have been playing with is a forstner bit to huck out material. Here in New Zealand we are in lockdown so waiting on things to arrive is a curse. So after a month my forstners got here a few days ago and look promising. I'm using them in a battery drill but a drill press looks like it is a better option specially with super hard woods to get good continuous pressure on the bit. But tbh I had used a 1 inch auger bit I had laying about which worked well when I had nothing else and didn't want to use the chainsaw for smaller areas.

So I purchased two types of grinder attachments to carve wood and the one was incredibly dangerous! Angle Grinder Wood Carving Disc OBA 4-1/2 inch. Wood Grinding Wheel, Grinder Blades for Wood 7/8'' Arbor with 3 Tungsten Teeth www.amazon.com/dp/B083CXNY1X/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_W9T5NG6PADD6GCHT3SSQ?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 I used one similar to this and the issue was it was too aggressive. If your he’d very still and slowly shaved off wood it may work but I would never recommend it. While I was making this one, I had both hands on the grinder and I was honestly a little worried about it and the wood moved slightly and the tooth dug into the wood so hard that it broke one of the teeth off and ripped the grinder out of my right hand and halfway out of my left hand. I knew I came very close to getting hurt very badly but when I watched the video, it was 2 or 3 inches from spinning around and getting my arm and I was able to stop it just inches from my face. After that I am trying to much safer. This kind is much easier to control, safer, and not as aggressive. Grinder Wood Tungsten Carbide Grinding Wheel Grinder Shaping Disc Bore Wood Sanding Carving Tool Woodworking Angle Grinder Attachment www.amazon.com/dp/B082HDMBXF/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_NPXWJJS9P3B9MTW6G16C?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

I have seen people use forstner bits to remove the bulk of the wood that needs to be removed. It seems to work really well and is a safe way to remove wood. I haven’t gotten into chiseling much because I don’t have a good set of woodworking chisels. I need to get some. Do you have any recommendations on what type? Stay safe and healthy and keep busy in lockdown!

Hmm now I am wondering if you could have used a drill press to cut a lot of that out. Lots of work there. I actually like the rustic look.
@SimonSaysDIY
@SimonSaysDIY 3 жыл бұрын
That’s a great idea! I’ll have to try that some time. With a forstner drill bit you can remove a lot of material and take the bold of the wood out. Thanks!!

@@SimonSaysDIY I had another thought as well.... So, a frame, some thing like your one for the router, but made to fit the circular saw and bowl blank centered in the frame. leave the height/depth adjustment loose. Lift to 0 cut depth, then plunge slowly in, cross grain. Make cuts about 1/4 inch apart down the length you want, then chip/break out the sections. Should work great for a rounded bottom... I have a couple of lathes, so do all of mine that way....

Thanks for the feedback! in my more recent videos, I have changed to a watermark logo in the top left corner that stays for the whole video instead. Hopefully, this is more subtle and less distracting. The reason for the logo is so that people don't steal your videos and repost as their own.
