In this video I will share with you the pen tips I use in pyrography, and I will show you examples of when I use the pen tips. Plus I will cover the different options that Colwood offers with their pens; Fixed vs Replaceable Tip Handset System, Tip Polishing, Tip Bending. I will also offer my opinion on which pen tips I consider essential to own.
Blog about the pen tips: wp.me/p8j0lZ-2wa
You can purchase the pen tips directly from Colwood: woodburning.com
Please note that all of the pen tips in this video are manufactured by Colwood. I use a Colwood Super Pro II, but I do not receive compensation of any kind if you purchase any of their products. Also keep in mind that I like my Colwood burner a lot, but I have not tried any other brand of burner.

If you are looking for a video that explains what you can do with each and every pen tip made by Colwood, this is NOT the video for you. The truth is most of the pen tips do the same thing. For example there are several writing pen tips available and the real difference between this is how small or large of a line they can create. The same can be said for the numerous shaders available. You only need 2 pen tips - a writer and a shader. From the Colwood series I'd recommend their standard writer pen tip that they call the C writer. Their pen tips are assigned a letter for identification purposes. As for the shader I'd recommend the D shader. This shader as different sized edges, so you can create a much wider range of burn stroke widths. I recommend having the shader bent to a 45 degree angle, but polishing I consider to be purely optional. If you plan to burn on leather the polishing is handy.

Hi Manuel, there are pyrography artist who do use 1 tip for everything. The burners we used as kids didn't have a temperature control. That's the most important thing to have. Otherwise it's too difficult to do any shading. Have a great day!

Brenda

Colwood identifies their pen tips with a letter. For example, if I say I'm using the D shader, that would be the exact name and "number" The board I was burning on had the letter above the pen tip I was using. I have a community post (#150) about pen tips that presents the information in a more condensed format and the pen tips are grouped by size. It might help answer questions you have. Hi Doug, just to let you know I haven't heard back from Colwood yet. I'm not declaring defeat yet. I'm going to wait one more week as my request was a bit unusual. My guess is that the owner, ceo, or whomever is in charge would need to decide if they want to provide a discount code. If they are like most companies that can take a little time. :)

I started to get into wood burning when I was in middle school with some very basic tips and simple stencils and I really loved it! I recently came across my old soldering iron while cleaning up some of my crafting tools. This video is a fantastic re-introduction for me because it made me realize that I don’t actually have a good shader, so thank you for putting this together! Out of curiosity, do you have any recommendations on how I could test my soldering iron to make sure it’s still safe to use? It’s been kept in a cool, dry storage box and none of the wires look frayed or anything like that. I haven’t used it since 2002 and I don’t want to accidentally hurt myself or blow a fuse when I plug it in.

It's amazing how long pyrography has been in existence. At one time it was a very crude artform done by heating a metal poker to burn the wood with. You would need to check with the manufacturer of your burner to see their recommendations. By the sounds of it the devices has been stored well and there shouldn't be any issues, but I can't guarantee that or made any recommendations for testing it.

Hi Verna, I'm so glad to hear that. The number of tips available was overwhelming to me when I first started. I think part of the reason there are so many types is that wood carvers use them. Hi Mary, thank you for the compliment. Just remember that very few people wake up and discover they are an artist. Instead it takes practice. Just start burning. What's the worst that will happen? It doesn't turn out as well as you wanted. That's better than never trying! I would check with a local wood carving club or store to see if someone in your area offers classes. As for pictures showing step by step, that's what my website is for. If a video has a corresponding website blog, I put a link into the video description. Be aware that not all videos have a corresponding written blog. Just like not all blogs have a corresponding video.

Hi Brenda, very informative and helpful. I’ve just bought the Colwood super pro 11 and it came with 5 tips. I have ordered the small and large ball tips and the fine writer and waiting to get them, but I wonder you you mind telling me how you bent your tip please? I know you don’t recommend it, but to keep costs down I didn’t ask to have any bent . I know my warranty will be void and that’s fine, also if it should break then it’s my problem . I’ve been wondering on how to do it myself and also would it be better to do while hot or cold. Any advice is welcome and thank you again for sharing your knowledge.
@PyrographyMadeEasy
@PyrographyMadeEasy 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Barbara, do not attempt to bend the metal while it is warm. I broke a tip doing that! Also try not to let your pen tips get glowing hot. It is really bad for the metal. Let me explain what I did so you can avoid my mistake. I bent the pen tip end with some pliers right where the two wires end and the pen tip begins. I will mention that is not a good spot. Then I let the pen tip get glowing hot. I don't normally do this, but I wanted pictures for my blog to show others what not to do. Afterwards I decided I didn't like the angle I had bent the tip, so I used pliers to bend it a bit more and it snapped right off. Why should you avoid letting your pen tips get hot enough to glow? They can lose their tempering. I think that's what happened to my pen tip. I think the metal got hot, lost its tempering and then got brittle. This caused it to snap off when I tried to bend it more. To bend your own, use metal pliers. I do recommend bending the tips along the two thick connecting wires. Don't bend them where I have that is shown in the video. Since my are already bent, I leave them alone as I'm afraid that if I try to bend them back to their original state I'll break them. Hope that helps and that you enjoy pyrography!

Pyrography Made Easy Thank you so much for your advice Brenda and for taking the time to do so. I started my pyrography journey during our first Covid lockdown in March. I had bought a cheap tool, which lasted approximately one hour. Then I found a Peter Child’s pen machine here in Ireland, but the tips were extremely fine wire that bent very easily, but didn’t break. Finally I did find the Colwood and I have it about a month now. I wasn’t using the proper wood either, I was using what I could find locally, which is mostly pine, so the fine wire tips would gouge into the wood and not glide over the top. Again finally I found basswood ply, which here is called lime wood, and it is lovely to work with. The supplier I found only has it in 2mm depth and in A4 size, but I will try cutting it down if I want a smaller size. I can use the Peter Child’s machine now too, so sometimes I use both. Needless to say I have so much to learn, but I’m loving it and as you say practice is the key. Thank you for sharing your skills, your work is truly amazing.

This is a general question, I just started this craft. I use the ballpoint tip to do the outline. I am having issues with my lines and they do not come out smooth when it hits the grain. Is there another type of nib? I am trying to do an outline of a circle and it comes out blotchy.
@PyrographyMadeEasy
@PyrographyMadeEasy 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Santiago, Welcome to the exciting artform called pyrography! I hope that you'll love it as much as I do. I doubt that the pen tip is the issue. Instead, I would guess that it is a heat or hand pressure issue. The higher the heat is the more the burn tends to spread when you burn over grain lines. Heavy hand pressure causes all sort of problems. I have a video about the importance of using a light hand pressure. The video demonstrates the difference between heavy & light hand pressure. Plus there is a test to check your hand pressure. Here's a link to that video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p55_etSEmtHdeJs.html

I need a wood burner machine (pyography), my country is Bangladesh, and how much it costs?, how can I get it?

Almost all of the machine manufacturers sell direct and will ship internationally. I have a video where I compared pyrography handsets. Not the burners, just the handsets. In the video description of that video I provide links to all of the different manufacturer's websites. Here's a link to that video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f76arZyWlprNYas.html

Hi Carol, Colwood does sell all of their pen tip individually, but sometimes sets can drop the cost per pen down a bit.

I found your vidio very interesting. I have been wood burning for quite some time, just a novice that enjoys this art. my problem is, I had a lot of walnut hallow patterns, but lost some due to a flood in the house, I still have some. Where can I find patterns,?, Also, where can I buy woodburning tips, I have 1 tip, 1 pen, 1 meter, that I bought at a craft show in Florida, I now live in Colorado. Would appreciate any help. I am using store bought pens and tips.

HI Janet, sorry to hear about the flood. That must have been terrible. I'm not sure what sort of patterns you're after. I have a number of free patterns on my website (pyrographymadeeasy.com) and I also sell some on my Etsy page. There are numerous patterns online, books for patterns, etc. As for pen tips, that depends on the type of burner you're using. I would search for the manufacturer of your burner and check their website for pen tips. Hope that helps.

Sometimes it takes a bit. I immediately glommed onto a small pen tip and I've been trying to train myself to use larger ones ever since. I've been discovering how versatile the D shader is by colwood, so if I were to recommend just 1 shader the D shader is it.

Colwood offers a 90 degree and 45-degree bent tip. What do you recommend?
@PyrographyMadeEasy
@PyrographyMadeEasy 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Robin, you happened to catch me while I was online working on a new community post. Personally I like the 45 degree. Now I will admit that I have not tried the 90 degree, but it seems like it would be awkward to use. Have a great evening.

This is very interesting. I want to try the Colwood systems. I currently use a Weller system, which I believe you are familiar with. Please check out my work in my pyrography playlist and tell me what you think? I think getting polished tips that Colwood offers will take my work to a whole new level! Thank you!

@PyrographyMadeEasy 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mel, thank you. I'm not familiar with the Weller system, but I watched one of your videos and you're creating fantastic artwork with it. Since you burn on leather the polished tips would be beneficial as they glide better across the surface of the leather. I've only used a colwood system, so I can't say if it is the best one, but I haven't had any problems with mine. Have a great day!

Too bad you are advising bending pen tips in the way Colwood does. I immediately regrated it because the slim wires by the tips unfortunately are burning wood in a places I did not intended to burn. Now I understand why it would be better to bend them as you do- right by the tip- even if it is a risk and you do not recommend that ;)
@PyrographyMadeEasy
@PyrographyMadeEasy Жыл бұрын
I don't want someone breaking the tip off of their pen and blaming me for it. Like you, I don't care for the way Colwood bends their tips. I have found that you can re-bend tips, even ones bent on the wires, but be careful! Too much bending and it will break the tip.
