here's another version of the Gnome video -trying out a couple variations and would love to hear your feedback in the comments
-i used a 4x4 of Pine for this woodcarving and although i never measured as i went it turned out to be 10 inches tall
-tools used were a Svante Djarv drawknife as well as the smaller Veritas and the knife was a 2" Helvie rough out
-if you are new to carving i have a whole playlist that will get you headed in the right direction here • Woodcarving Cutting Te...
-i also have a small Gnome tutorial and many other beginner projects here
• How To Carve A Simple,...
thanks for watching and i will see you on the next video whether that be in the shop or in the great outdoors :)

Part of the reason that I'm a subscriber is that I enjoy hearing you when you carve.... and you don't necessarily have to be talking about the carving! You could be telling stories about being with Joe or Shawn or whoever... I would still enjoy it and I would still try and carve what ever it is that you have for us!! Keep'm comin'!!

Thank you Doug. 👍 I preferred this one over the short one with the music. By far. And while I do enjoy the very one sided conversation of the talking demonstrations, this was more natural to me. I am often carving when I am watching your videos. This had the feeling of a couple guys sitting on the porch carving away each working on a project. Sometimes the best conversations have no words.

Hi Doug. I am at the low end of the talent scale. I enjoy the videos like this one where you show the steps and pause occasionally to show us progress or make a point. People with more talent may find videos like this slow so I think all your videos regardless of speed or speech will help someone. I watch all the videos. I learn something from each one and hope you will keep making them. Stay well.

The slower version is better. People watch to learn from you so the slower one is much more helpful to them. I have been carving for 10 years and I still enjoy watching your videos. Anytime someone asks me about carving I send them to your channel. In my opinion you are a great teacher. My only criticism is the lack of instruction on this video. And I agree with some of the other people that I miss your banter will you carve. On a side note I would love to see you and Joe on a fishing trip.

I just wanted to thank you for your instruction on carving and for others like me getting into this DON’T get discouraged and here’s why.....Just watching videos isn’t enough because I picked up my piece of 1”x1” x 4” piece of basswood and at first I thought this is a piece of cake!!!! Well I thought my carving knife was not getting shape and not cutting right well my little Pike is starting to look like a fish!!!!!!! Yippy to me!!!! I wasn’t using enough pressure to make my cuts and I am feeling awesome!!!!!! And I owe it to you and your words of don’t give up and keep at it!!!!! I got to say put on a glove!!!!! Lots to learn still but I am getting enjoyment finally and my blades were sharp!!!!!

Love to watch you carve ... And I think you are trying a variety to see what everyone likes best. But again seem to really enjoy anything you do.

I enjoyed them both. The short one with the music was fun. If I had to chose, I'd pick the longer, silent version though. I watch KZfaq on my PC or my TV, so I don't mind the length, and the quiet solitude is cool. Folks watching on a phone or similar device may prefer the shorter one.

Slow version is obviously easier to keep pace with, but the fast version got the concept across quick to those of us who watched you carve the smaller gnome previously. I like everything you have ever done Doug. I will say folks dont learn about the Carver or his details about the why of certain things unless you are talking, but there is a different audience for each way you present it. I love all your videos regardless of topic Doug. You have been an absolute inspiration and a blessing to me. Thanks for doing all you do!

So I will try to keep this short. I watch most of the videos on KZfaq at 2x. There are a few individuals I watch in normal. I started watching your channel for the camping adventures. I will watch those in normal all the time. I have stuck around for the carving videos. Its not exactly an interest of mine. That being said what I do find fascinating is seeing what comes out of the piece of wood. In that regard I enjoy the longer format because it lets me see more of the reveal. I do admit that I will tend to still watch these in 2x speeds. The Short versions are good and I agree with others that its great for mobile, but I don't do mobile. So if I had too choose between short form or long form.... the long. (even if I do watch in 2x) [ Hmm, not that short]

As a beginner I would appreciate the help of your video that tells me how to do this, either way, they are enjoyable to watch. The other thing I noticed is the cuts were a bit deeper than normal, and I don’t think with my level of talent I could do this without wearing a glove, not intended as a criticism of your work

It's not like you say stupid stuff while carving. I enjoy your commentary. I watched both and a few words in the silent one might be nice. For example, when you sketch lines on the work, it helps to tell the audience what you're thinking, what the lines are for. I can go either way but it occurs to me that you could film one carving session in silence and then have a voice over for the talking version....then you'd only have to do it once. Maybe that's what you did! Looks like the same gnome face.
