In this new series we'll go through the step by step carving of a drake Wood Duck. The shapes of the head and body are quite different than the decoys we have carved in previous videos.

I would like to see how to make a top view on the pattern. I found it difficult to get a top view image of a wood duck.

I use Pat Godin’s pattern books as a starting point for top down patterns of birds that I can’t find a top down view. He also sells individual patterns on his web site at Godinart.com

@tomchristieart . Tom thanks a million for your efforts here. I have used Pat's painting guides and bought his basic pattern book with mallards, pintails, etc, I reviewed his wood duck patterns and thought I would dip my toe into a customized pattern this time. I had some great shots from my digital camera. I ended up using a top view pattern from one of the wildfowl carving magazine issues. I wanted just the right high head in this case. I wanted it high but not as high as most patterns. I was trying to have a relaxed high head if that makes sense. The others I found looked like the bird was too cautious. I hunt the decoys I have built, so looking to make them natural and relaxed. All are high head however.

Sounds good Paul. Thanks for the feedback. Always a part of the fun creating original patterns!
