First time to do this. I made a Bible box for my dad who’s turning 90 in August and decided to do a “Rob Cosman” wood hinge. I didn’t know if it would turn out, but Rob’s description and instructions made it doable. I didn’t purchase the dowel kit. I used a drill press instead. Quite frankly, the dowel kit would have made it much easier. I will definitely use this technique again.

Your videos are great! I am a Veteran living with PTSD, Depression, and Anxiety and was strongly urged to find new, healthy hobbies. Woodworking always interested me but your videos have helped me tune in to the beauty and artistry of being a true craftsman. Thank you for all of your tips and training. Your confidence has inspired my own confidence in working with hand tools. I hope to take a formal class of yours in the future.

Not only a beautiful finished product but some of the very best instruction on youtube. To often the basis of the box are omitted, but you started the project explaining the details. You also did the explanation by showing all of the mistakes that were made so any one trying any project would know that even the best craftsman makes mistakes and the true test is in correcting those mistakes. Just a very good job from start to finish.

Extreme detail - Any serious, aspiring woodworker will love this video! Thanks Rob - and whoever ran the camera for you! As someone mentioned, the sound faded in spots, but was still legible. Makes me itch to get more time to try some things out myself! I don't have the funds free to go ahead and order that kit - or I certainly would! It takes so much of the tedium out of doing such a fine hinge point.

Great video! I am eager to try the wooden hinge, and have recently purchased the tool for 1/4" and 3/8" from you. Cutting the groove in your video was great to see as I was contemplating of several ways to do it, and appreciate the tip to cut the inside lip a bit lower to allow the lid to close completely!!! The dowel manufacture was really cool, but I do not have a plane blade to build that set up, but will find, purchase or adapt a sharp edge to do it. I am 73, retired and always have dabbled in woodworking and now have a 12 x 24 shop that is pretty well equipped to suit my needs. Should have a bigger one, but at the time, I thought it would be big enough...LOL...I was wrong. I have a place for everything, just cannot leave anything out after I use it or I will trip over it! I love the hobby, have restored a few pieces, made some furniture, but am really getting into boxes....and looking forward to my first wooden hinged box. Thanks for what you do...wish you lived closer to NE Pa.

Rob- great stuff you do. Thanks for taking the time to share your tricks of the trade. Very informative in many ways. One thing though......would you let your daughter or wife run a router with out hearing protection? Having tinnitus from working a career in various trades, I can verify the hearing loss from doing the same thing, ignorant of the fact that loud high frequency noise will kill your hearing. Fact. Please please please do both yourself and your viewers the courtesy of proper use of preferably muffs, at least ear plugs. I know that they inconvenience your making the videos, but you will thank yourself for being able to hear your grandchildren talk to you. I speak from experience, you can also!

When you brought the diameter of the dowel smaller you use painters tape as a shim...i am detailed to a point that most people don’t like to work with me but you sir are on a different level and I love it! Great job, great video and I am a new to your channel.

Nice. For people who have difficulty with making dowel, try a long plug cutter in a drill press into end grain. Doesn't achieve the same grain matching, but does produce a lovely, perfectly consistent, engineered dowel.

It says it all when someone as skilled as yourself still struggles to work out imperial measurements on the fly, such a ridiculous system for fine detail work.. that being said it's wonderful to watch a fine craftsman at work & a beautiful box.

being a little picky, but was always told to set the planner on it's side when not in use. The one was sit down on a metal ruler. Other wise I really enjoyed the video and your workmanship.

thanks for another fantastic video. just an idea, but i think you might have less trouble with the router setup to accommodate the hinge if you made an allowance for the sawdust to escape.

I watched this video 5 months ago and watched it again. It's a thrill to see that hinge when you open the box for the first time. I noticed that when you routed the groove that you did not get any burn marks. What is the secret to no burn marks? Maybe you don't have a problem with burn marks but if you do get any, do you just glue to the burn mark? If you sand out then the dowel won't fit snug. Do you wax between the pieces of the dowel? on the end grain of the dowel around the metal pins?

I have a small amount of apricot wood I salvaged about 20 years ago from the farm where I grew up. Not necessarily the prettiest wood, but it has tremendous sentimental value. I have been wondering what to make from it. A couple of small boxes with these hinges will be perfect. Now to practice first ...

Have you seen Elkhead Tool's dowel making jig? When they occasionally show up at shows they promote it in conjunction with Cosman-style wood-hinged boxes they've made. They're petrified of product liability because the jig uses a spinning table saw blade where you employ a fixed (and finicky) plane blade. At one point they were requiring a disclaimer/release before they'd even sell it to you. I bought one but haven't tried it yet.

Not sure if you figured out why it had a wobble. But I was thinking it was because it was a bit to snug with the dove tail at one side when you were setting it with a hammer and it expanded your height.

I have seen videos on how you use it with your cordless drill, but I think it would be a real help to see you make it_ as I guess to maximize on your new set of dowel center drill kit I would need to make one for each different dowel size. Hey Rob - love the video and the meticulous nature of your work. I wonder, from my own perspective of someone who seems to make many mistakes along the way with a project, whether you as a Master Craftsman, in fact, beat yourself up for the minor indiscretions that you mention along the way as you work or whether you can accept that perfection is a relative pursuit which is often merely a function of personal expectations, realistic or otherwise?

you could make the end of your bench hook a little shooting plane for the dowels...

FIRST HONEST VIDEO on a woodworking channel..... the box was not PERFECT.... the very slight error was not edited out, but used to demonstrate how to deal with a situation. VERY Well within tolerance for carbohydrates, the tolerances do not have to go the extra positions after the decimal as precision machining on a Bridgeport mill. Showing how to deal with situations is more valuable than a demo when all the catywompous is cleaned out of the video. Beautiful finish. Are some sort of stays or brass chains typically put inside box to limit opening to 110 degrees, so as not to break hinge?
