My Wood Stove Chimney Pipe Installation Gone WRONG with Bird Guard Vent Cover by causing the chimney pipe leak and create a smoke filled cabin.I have the rain cap for cabin wood stove but still had problems keeping birds out of chimney so I installed a diy stove pipe guard for the rain cap but made a big mistake in doing so. With a small cabin in the woods and a wood stove smoking into house with major draw problems then I decided to share this one of many wood stove tips. Don't do what I did when it comes to wood stove burning and protecting birds. Not one of my best wood stove ideas. Wood stove back draft and creosote build up will accelerate much quicker and create a life threatening fire hazard.

In Pa, 1/2" screen is small as you can go and be up to code, a d people still clog that regularly. All on how you burn and what you burn.

I installed a new wood stove with me pipes and it was awesome! But last night so if a sudden the smoke started coming out of the crevices in the pipes so I had to distinguish the fire. So today I had to remove the mesh from the top, I'm guessing to keep the birds out but it just have me a headache so I had to remove it. So now it's working fine.

We had 1/2 inch hardware cloth around our vent top and it got clogged with soot during the latest cold snap. I removed the hardware cloth and tonight I removed a starling from the inside of out wood stove. What fun.

My daddy had a Whopper wheel that fell down in the chimney one year and you don't hear them much anymore around here and I miss it really bad I hear him every once in a while. ☺️

Yep, I use a 1/2" hardware cloth 'spark arrestor'. It keeps bits of embers from falling on my cloth yurt roof, and keeps any critters out. For me it is essential to have but yes, it needs cleaning about 3 times in a heating season and I found out the hard way just like what you described. Smoke coming in through the cracks of the pipes inside. Lesson learned, check regularly.

Thanks for sharing! We've had half a dozen birds in the stove. (Only one didn't survive). I was debating on what to put up there but after your video, I agree, chicken wire is the way I'll go.

I just installed my first woodstove and just two day ago I had this same issue, same exact wire. What had happened was a week of rain and water was finding itself in the flu from outside. 6' pipe about 7 pieces of wood I tried burning. Today I found the issue ,fixed the seams of the pipe and replaced screen with larger holes.

Chicken wire will burn through fast. Fasten a piece of 1/2"×1" rabbit wire on from the outside so you can remove to hose it. Used it for many years.

Glad you were home / awake when that happened! Of course something like this always happens during a snow & ice storm when you can't go fix it..... I think the chicken wire will work great

Yeah me too......the smoke didn't come out of the stove or lower flu pipe but just up in the loft where the triple wall sections are from the seams and of course smoke rises and we were down on the bottom so it had to fill the loft area before we really knew. The smoke detector battery was dead also...ooops. 2 Lessons learned. ;)

Oh...by the way....did you just have to write the Box off? It's been almost 2 months and I myself haven't heard anything. Sorry it went south. That's sucks too cause I gifted close to $200 in that thing for folks to enjoy but most was for that young couple doing the build. I even put a little note in there for them explaining that and the box wasn't suppose to leave them at the size I sent it cause I THOUGHT we were gifting a nice couple with kids trying to start a fresh. Seems like you just can't do anything nice now days without someone trying to knock it somehow. I still got the mails showing that they knew and gave them a heads up. No big deal...just a little curious how the box got to the size it did and not knowing where the things went that I put in it. Was hoping you would at least get something out of the deal. Sometimes I just have a real distaste for humans. LoL

We have a oil-fired water heater. And a small bird came down the flue and got into the jacket of the heater. It smelled like fried chicken. It was during a cold snap in the middle of winter. So that sucker was looking for heat. Going to a wood burning insert, I have since capped all the flues with a nice stainless cap.

Use 1/2×1 rabbit wire. Keeps birds out and lets creosote flow out.

You can't get a vent with small holes in it? I've got one on my wall heater vent, had it for 40 years.

Wall heater?? Is it a wood burner? If not then I suspect it doesn't produce creosote. That would be the difference if your burning gas and I'm burning wood. ;)

3 Basket Living Whats that got to do with vent cover? I use cover with one inch square holes that sparrows cant get into.

My vent cover screen that I had on has 1/4" square holes. The creosote built up clogging the holes. 1" holes will probably be fine...that's why I said i'm gonna go with chicken wire. You didn't clarify if your Wall Heater is a wood burner.

I think I would like to agree....although I didn't really harp on it...It filled the cabin completely up with smoke and I was still awake. It could have had a real potential of things being a lot worse. I'm just glad I was here AND awake.
