I had a bit of fun turning this femisphere from some pine posts a neighbour left for me. Learnt lots - including to be more careful with my measurements as I needed to do a fair amount of sanding to get it to look reasonable by the end. Also I wasn't happy with the glue up I did too - so lots of learning (which is the fun part I guess!!) 😀

Hi. I am very impressed, first that you found this shape and 2nd that you figured out how to create it. This had me smiling all day!

Thank you so much! I can’t take full credit as I did see it being turned a while back on KZfaq somewhere and have always wanted to give it a go! Appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment though! 😃

Hot glue, the king of shock resistance in adhesives, at least commonly available and easily released ones. Great way to show its properties off, and a cool project. I imagine when I try this, I'll spend a bit more time sanding at the end.

Nice job!! I've made several of these, though mine were a lot smaller (3"). They made nice gifts for my nieces. They also test your turning skills for precise measurement. Thanks for sharing! 👍🏽

Not sure if it works with wood as well, but with plastics a few drops of isopropyl alcohol break the bond with hot glue and releases it cleanly!

Way cool. But just wondering why you didn’t sand the paint off when you glued the two halves together? Wood glue works best when it can penetrate the wood fibers

I made some of these. But I glued the pieces at 90 degrees to each other before turning. This makes the grain consistent when the piece is finally glued after turning and it is less obvious how it is done. Well done anyway.

@@surfcoastwoodcraft Its still in progress, though its on the lathe currently. I hope I can get some free time out in the shop this weekend to finish it. I made a few shorts in slow-mo of me turning the wood round. Hopefully I can get the radius nailed down, I think it's gonna be a bit smaller than the one you made.

What lathe would you recommend for someone starting out? I have a experience on metal lathes but none on wood.
@surfcoastwoodcraft
@surfcoastwoodcraft Жыл бұрын
Hi Eric, thanks for watching and asking the question. I'm still relatively new to wood turning myself so probably not the best person to ask.....I'm from Australia and bought a Sherwood lathe (mid price one) which I am loving. If I had a bit more money at the time I may have gone slightly bigger to allow for bigger bowls.

This was messily done in every respect. What is the template for if the two sheets are then not worked to fit after all? I'm sorry, but this can be done much better.

Thank you for taking the time to comment and leave your feedback. I’ve only been turning for less than a year and am thoroughly enjoying a new hobby but I do agree parts could have been done better but that’s what I love about life and trying new things - it’s all learning experience! Sometimes we all strive for perfection but actually forget there is beauty and happiness in the imperfections. 😀

That hot glue between those 2 pieces is extremely secure. People underestimate it’s holding power. He would never have been able to pull it apart without heating it first.
