I am a 65 year old novice bowl turner in Michigan, USA. I have worked with wood (mostly oak, ash, and cherry) building kitchen cabinets, dressers, wainscoating, and detailed fluted door trim. I am very glad that you have shown me the techniques for basic bowl, spindle, coblet turning, as well as the position of the various tools, and speeds that you use... THANKS again....

I've done a bit of woodworking/carpentry for years, but have always wanted to do wood turning. I'm approaching retirement and recently bought a cheap Harbor Freight lathe, just to see if I really liked it. I've been turning, or destroying wood, every time I get a chance. I wish I had not waited this long. There are no turning clubs or such near me, so I'm relying on youtube to be my instructor. I really appreciate these videos. One suggestion might be to do a video on tools, accessories, etc. There is a real learning curve there.

Dear Mike, I've only recently started woodturning after being given a lathe. And pretty-much everything I have "learned" is down to you my friend, so I'd like to take this opportunity to say thank you for the amount and QUALITY of videos you have on here. Early on I bobbed around between different video creators - but I always found myself back on your page Mike. Your calm, knowledgeable method of sharing information comes across in a very easy going way... which is Ideal for me as I have difficulty in being lectured to. It's taken me a while to get just the basic tools together. Christmas saw me ok, but for quite some time all I had was a decent skew chisel. Thankfully I'm quite proficient at sharpening, so I've learned to do all the basics so carefully with the skew chisel. Now I've got 5 decent brand new chisels, a decent stock of wood, LOADS of ideas on your wonderful videos. The only thing I need is a chuck. But I don't have a clue where to start? Money is ALWAYS an issue, but I have around 70 - 80 pounds. My Lathe is pretty basic, it's a Clarke 40" Wood Lathe.... I'M Really sorry to land this on you, but to be honest, you are the closest thing to a teacher I have... I really don't have anyone else to ask 🙁 If I've overstepped the mark, just delete this and accept my apologies. If NOT please advise me what chuck to get? I'm at a loss?
@MikeWaldt
@MikeWaldt 6 жыл бұрын
Hi, I can only think of Charnwood as an option for near your price point. The other possibility is to search eBay for a used one that would fit your particular spindle. You could also ring Peter Helmsley at The Toolpost here in the UK, and ask his advice, as they do a Versachuck system which may be what you're looking for. Hope this helps Cheers Mike

Thanks, Mike, another excellent video in your Beginner's Guide series. One suggestion for those of us new to bowls would be to add some discussion of the tool presentation to the wood to show how you ride the bevel on inside and outside as well as the scraping presentation. Thanks for this great series of videos, incredibly helpful for someone just starting out - hoping to go to my local hackspace and turn a bowl this week. This video has given me a lot more insight and confidence on where to start with that! Steve.

Another great job, Mike! You made that piece of walnut turn into a beautiful bowl - well proportioned and a lovely finish! You are getting ahead of me, I am still doing between center work, haven't even got to turning a box from your earlier video yet :) Nice thing about this medium, though, when I am ready, I can watch again, make sure I have the techniques down pat. Hearty congrats on hitting 8000, that's quite an achievement! Looking forward to your next work!

Good video Mike. I learnt to turn in 1989 at Craft Supplies, Derbyshire. It was a weekend course run by Jamie Walwin. There were 5 people on the course and we stopped in their own B & B for the 2 nights. 4 or 5 projects we made, one being the box. I've decided to return to turning after a period off of ten years and you kindly answered my question on what lathe to buy, Subject to the T.P.O. (Turning permission officer) i.e. my Lady wife. The front runner be an Axminster lathe for under a £1000 with chuck and tools etc. The only tools I have left is a Jacobs chuck and Sorby 1/2"....may I wish you and yours a happy New Year, and good health sir.........
