As always, fantastic work. You’re such an inspiration to a new turner like myself. I’ve only had my Lathe since this past April. I’m now doing cherry bowl’s, black walnut bowl’s. Started doing Christmas ornaments. This morning I turned a rolling pin from a glue up I did yesterday. I’m gonna teach myself how to segmented stuff like this also. And I have been making torched flags for quite a while now. I really enjoy your channel. Thank you Gary. Have a great day. Sincerely, Keith.

Hi Keith, well it sure sounds like you are doing one very important thing in wood turning. Having Fun! As long as I have been turning the minute I stand in front of the lathe I start having fun. You have a nice variety of things your are doing. When you start on segments take your time. Not only on how easy you start with but just take your time and make sure everything fits before moving on. I find woodturning to be relaxing and do not rush it. Take care, Gary

Thanks so much John. The reason for making a ring that I could cut into 2 rings was so I could get the grain that way. Other wise I would have cut the strips thick enough for just one ring and all the nice grain would have been a glue joint. Thanks for watching, Gary

Thanks so much Phil! I do enjoy segments and love to share what I know about them. On something like this where I wanted 3/8" thick rings it would have been easy to just rip the board into 3/8 strips. Then all that nice grain is lost in glue. I do think that happens a lot. This was just something to keep me away from that root ball that keeps calling LOL. Take care my friend, Gary

Hi, Gary. I'll have to commend you on your efforts on the segmented bowl. I haven't developed the patience necessary to cut and glue 504 segments (or 252, then cut in half!). With the figured burls that I have access to, I can turn a bowl with 503 fewer pieces! 🙂 I may graduate to your league someday but, for now, I'll leave those challenges to you. It certainly is a beautiful piece! Nice work! Take care, --Paul

Great looking turning. Really like the way you rotated the rings slightly different for the first and second ring of each diameter. I’ve don’t two segmented projects. Would do more if I had a real table saw. I did one project where all the segments were the same wood. Surprisingly the first project which was maple and walnut was easier to do and looked much better. You seem to use a different finish on each of your turnings. Would love to see a spreadsheet of your projects with details on the finishing and why you chose the finishing material and application method.
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Bob. Happy you enjoyed the video. I have many choices of finish and just did one with shellac. I choose the finish based on the turning and how I want it to look. And which will be the easiest to put on. This finish was chosen because it would have been hard to spray lacquer on the inside. Where as the Polyacrylic can be wiped on and give a finish as nice as lacquer. Thanks for watching, Gary

Thank you Steve. I could tell looking at the board that the edge was much nicer. But once the finish was on it really proved it. I just love all the different grain we get in wood. Take care, Gary

WOW Gary...Sat down with my coffee thinking of slowly waking up watching you turn. All the segments, hot glue, different woods, gluing segments accurately (than going back & re-watch so I don't loose track). Pick up where I left off, re-watch thinking if just one little slipup happens along the way ...than what?...WHAT FUN!!!!! Watching, concentrating, re-watching, kind of understanding, more coffee, OH YEA...I'M GETTING IT, re-watch again...HA. Thinking how you should call your show "Wake You Up Wood Turning With Gary" TONS OF FUN, THANK YOU GARY!! TM

You know with your metal work and you are doing the final cut for perfection that you are not going to get a second chance. Wake Up Wood Turning With Gary...hmmm...I know he has 3 cups of coffee before heading to the shop LOL Thanks for watching buddy! Gary

Thanks Al, I love all types of wood work. I have made a lot of furniture and cabinets for our home. I made a roll top desk and a round oak pedestal dinning table with carved fee. Made both of those in around 1975-76. Pretty much mostly wood turning now. Thanks for watching, Gary

Beautiful work Gary. Nicely done. A great idea to initially cut the segments 2X as tall as needed and I agree that would for sure be a time saver in the build process and easier to glue the segments into rings. Cheers, Ted

I wasn't sure about your decision to change the shape of the bottom - but, I think you made the right decision! The final shape really looks good. I agree on the look of that edge grain - the way it glistens in the light is quite catching. Keep up these great videos ... I hope to have my shop and lathe up soon and may try some of your ideas.

Beautiful Vase, Gary. Great idea to double your rings/segments. I glued up my first segmented bowl a couple of days ago. 3 rings 12 segments per for a total of 36 segments. Of corse, black walnut base and segments. Turning it tonight. 😊 Take care, Rob.

Thanks Rob. When gluing the ring up that way you need to plan that out on the drawing. Normally each row will create the shape based on the diameter. But not hard to work out at all. I will watch for your first segmented bowl. I assume you will make a video of it. Take care, Gary

Thanks so much Tom. There are times when it might be faster to do it the other way or maybe save some wood. Such as cutting 3/8" strips which would have been quick and saved a little wood. But I would have lost the wonderful grain. Thanks for watching, Gary

Beautiful piece Gary. If I have one that’s inside is hard to turn I just put my lathe in reverse so it’s easier to see. I have a locking chuck so it won’t unscrew or at least haven’t yet 😁 I also sand and finish while I’m going because I’m not comfortable sticking my hand in a deep piece while it’s spinning & have had sanding and finishing sticks get pulled out of my hand.
@ThePapa1947

Thank you for the good information. I also turn in reverse when it is hard to see. And for sure turning as you glue up is needed for something like this. I turned and sanded 3 times as I recall. So about every 3 inches. I did all the finishing on the inside with soft cloth one the end of a stick. Thanks for watching, Gary

Wow Gary! Another amazing creation! Every time you do another segmented project, I get more inspired to try segments. I have always been just a "turn the block of wood round" kind of guy, but I think I will be doing some segments as soon as I can. I love your methodical approach, and explaining the reasons for each step. It's a real learning experience. Also, you mentioned in the beginning that you made a drawing, that's a really important part of doing a project like this. Maybe a topic for a future video. Thanks for a great lesson, and another beautiful project! See you soon!
