Tokyo-based woodblock printmaker Dave Bull presents a recorded Twitch live stream showing the entire process of making a woodblock print, from blank block right through to the completed print, in one uncut session (over three hours).
It was recorded on January 8, 2018 in his Asakusa workshop, and illustrates the production of a design by Ichijô Narumi (1877~1910).
The video is also available here on KZfaq in an edited version (about 42 minutes long):

Recently I have found a lot of intrigue in woodblock printmaking as of late, and had started practicing carving for a short period of time. That was disrupted by my family and I moving, where-in the man who we were having problems with took all of my practice pieces. This caused me to be quite discouraged, but every time I watch you I manage to find courage. Your relaxed attitude helps to make the hobby less daunting. For this I thank you greatly David. I love that you keep up such good quality, whilst having fun. You have an mindset worth aspiring for, and I plan to aspire.

I know *nothing* what-so-ever about wood-block carving or printing, but sharpening blades is kinda my thing. You are correct to use water with your diamond plates, the water helps to float away the swarf (metal grindings from the sharpening) and keep the plate clean and cutting well. It's not *necessary*, but your plate will make a more even, precise scratch pattern and last somewhat longer.

I've noticed that in the earlier vhs tapes of his interview, in his video where he talks about working with Ito-san, he says "y'know" a lot (like many North American English speakers do). My theory is when he was learning Japanese, he learned about "eto..." or "ano..." the latter was extremely similar to what he usually says in English, so he just kind of naturally switched.

As a professional knife maker I can say the stone doesn’t matter at all... it just needs to be flat and even... if it says 1000 grit it’s 1000 grit, doesn’t matter if it’s a japenese wet stone that costs $800 or some 1000 grit sandpaper spray glued to granite plate... the only difference is longevity of the stone really... carbide will last for ages where a stone will bow and warp over time etc

The part about people asking information/advice that you don’t really have more in-depth to give because the experience is what teaches you those answers is so true. You could just explain all day the difference in woods and the effects they have and why but that knowledge is mostly meaningless if you’ve never use the wood. Goes for anything especially tools for any profession. When you’ve been doing something for a few years you tend to have favorite tools that you instinctively grab depending on the job, at a point it’s almost subconscious to decide what tool/material is best for the problem in front of you, and the “why” is only taught to you by yourself.

Like many others, I definitely didn't expect to sit here for 3 hours and 20 minutes watching this but somehow I did. I don't have any interest in woodblock carving but the end result does look neat. You guys managed to keep things interesting throughout and it was fun to see a glimpse of the work staff and life in the building coming through.

David thank you!! I finally understand how Japanese registration marks work. I've studied American printmaking, and I just never got my carvings to register right. :) now that I've seen this I feel like I'm finally going to get multiple blocks to work together

I had to come back to this video because I bought a print of this motif in late November when I went to visit the Mokuhankan (in fact, it was the last one of the batch). I love it. It's simple yet strikingly beautiful and even though it's not a lot of lines yet it still seem to tell a story.

Amazing!! I happened upon your page because I fell for carving a couple of months ago. Now here I am seeing this video one year and one day to its recording. I watched the whole thing!!! This is probably the first YT vid I've watched over 40 mins. Your work and attention to detail are phenomenal! Your love for the art is commendable! This is maybe the third video I've watched in your series and I've learned so much already! Thank you so much! I'm subscribing and will be looking for more fantastic work from you in the future.

"Please, maybe, if it's not much trouble, is that okay?" lol you sound like me as a General Manager. It seems you're simply trying to be respectful and don't enjoy throwing your weight around. It's the same for me and the bonus for people like us is we generally attract very talented teams who are self motivated and enjoy their work. Keep being you Sir., I love all the work you do! Thank you very much for showing your craft and teaching us. You singlehandedly introduced me to woodblock carving/printing. Until about 2 years ago I didn't even know this was a thing and you've made me extremely interested in Japan and its rich history with its classic techniques!
