Other than the Gothic boxwood prayer bead skull this is the best wooden skull I’ve seen, I love that polish you put on it. And those renaissance miniatures were made by aliens if you ask me, so we humble earthlings shouldn’t necessarily use them to measure our success. With hard woods there is a trade off, roughing out is difficult but then you are able to add more detail and use the luster to your advantage to draw the eye from the rougher low spots, and your tools don’t have to be as finicky with keenness and bevel angles to not tear the grain or leave it fuzzy.

@@JimsonMakes Seriously Jim, that is beautiful work. The detail and the polish is stunning. Sorry, my first comment didn't quite express my admiration for this work. I need to buy another 'dremel' type tool. I'm learning hand carving at the moment. Mainly using an H. Roselli Wootz knife and an Original Mora with the laminated steel for my carving work.

I'm making a skull out of a branch of crepe myrtle. I just left it as the branch was and just started carving. I know it's easier, by blocking it first, but it's starting to take shape. I have the mouth open, and I'm working with the natural cracks in the wood. I might fill them with UV blue glowing epoxy. My skull is just about the size of the one you did. I can't wait to get it finished. I'm going to open the cheekbone away from the Jawbone. I'm just hoping it don't break. I really enjoyed watching you carve yours, and I wish I had been able to do that with mine. But when I finish it I'll share mine with you, and maybe we can talk about woodcarving. Thank you for sharing. I really enjoyed it.
@JimsonMakes

Thank you, I really appreciate you taking the time to watch my video. Your skull should come out great. One of my early miniature skulls I carved from a stick, the stick made a great handle to hold it whilst carving. I did consider hollowing out the cheek and zygomatic arch but decided not to mainly because I wanted it to be a tactile piece that people’s can pick up without risk of damage. I am just finishing a much more detailed skull carving at the moment, video coming very soon. Cheers Jim

i absolutely love it! i'm completely obsessed with skulls. i've drawn, sketched, painted and sculpted maybe a million of them. i loved the attention to detail you put in. everyone tends to forget the little foramen, or they're too hard to put in. i loved that you tried to put in sutures too, even if they came out a bit like uniform zig zags instead of sketchy. i seriously love this little guy. i'd buy him in a heartbeat. as if i need more skulls for my collection, haha.

Very cool little piece. I am not much into hand carving so much, but that is a cool little skull. I am just trying to get my first lidded box completed. Its harder than I thought to get the lid to line up right.

Thank you very much Stephen. Fitting lids to boxes is a tricky thing to do, very easy to overcut. Cheers Jim

Wonderful job Jim. I love it and Netsuke carving in general. Detail in such small pieces, I think, shows a lot more skill than a lager piece.
