During the Great Depression, when cash was hard to come by, the city of Tenino, Washington printed its own scrip on bits of wood. Now, the antique printing press is busy again producing wooden currency, adorned with Latin, for those hard-hit by the COVID shutdown. Luke Burbank reports.

@@sumobowler3790 have you ever read David Graeber Debt the first 5000 years? It explains how money works, all money is a recording of debt, not a store of value. It really is something we make up and many still don't understand.

@@sumobowler3790 Hmm here is a video, it is really eye opening and helps people to understand why money and taxes and markets go hand in hand. I think you can also think of it as the basis for Modern monetary theory which explains how fiat money works and how modern economies work. Some businesses are shady and refuse to pay unemployment under the guise that you're not qualified or eligible for unemployment benefits. They do the same thing in Tennessee where I live. Just like most of us in the USA are turned away from health insurance under the same guise of "You're not eligible for this" bs. Its why I don't have health insurance but yet I was diagnosed with Autism at a therapy clinic who put me on a program they used called safety net since I didn't have insurance :/

Who redeems the "wood bills"? The town government? So it is like a local food stamp program? Who gets the money? How? People in need or all the town? You have to apply for it? Very interesting concept.

kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ecB5fLGJza2ok6c.html&t This is how money has functioned for thousands of years, anyone can create money, the problem lies in getting people to accept your iou. Which is why the usd for example is widely accepted, because it promises that it will always be good to pay your taxes with.

It should be ok, since Regular money is backing it. Back in the old days, when corporations wiould build dams and big structures, they would setup towns with homes and grocery stores for the works. The workers would be get paid in fake currency created by the Corporations. They could use this currency in the town created by the corporations only. Real money backed the fake money it was just at teh corporate level. The company would by the products for the grocery store, entertainment, etc with real money.

Obviously they are trading in wooden money for real money at some point in tge life cycle. Some one or entity is backing this cake money with the real thing. You can't just print money and magically start using it edit I watched the video again. so its its basically a stimulus check , from city hall. City hall is using federal money or local taxes to pay for the stimulus money . As long as the local taxes or federal money can pay for this wooden money , then it should be ok. Their is risk for the small business though, if the money runs out.
