My great great uncle lived in hurst house (the naked beauty) probably when this was filmed and my dad used to go for Christmas there I never got to go inside because when he died the house was sold

I remember very well the chucking of sticks high into the branches to catch those spiky green clad mahogany beauties along the Woodford High Road, took me back to a time 65 years ago just about the time this film was made.

I moved to Woodford Green in 1960, a few years after this film was shot. I admit that it's a bit difficult to remember certain area but then we lived in Salway Close (just down the hill from Salway Hall) which was possibly closer to South Woodford. I later lived with my daughter in The Roses before moving to Holland in 1979 - our kitchen and bathroom windows overlooked the Churchill statue on the green (*_*)

Funny I cam across this. It was only yesterday that I walked past Hearts Gated and wondered what looked like in their hey day. Well now I know. Thank you for putting this on.

A much 'gentler' country then. I can't help thinking the world was a better place then, not perfect, but gentler. I hate what the world has become now in comparison.

Indeed, Second World War had finished about 14 years prior, ended with two atomic bombs. Not sure the world was gentler.

That cricket pavilion still stands! It’s just had a front facade added to it.. And the Cricketers public house just down the road serves a great pint.. The Woodford high road is still extremely busy though..

Bear in mind this was shot in 1958 when Britain was recovering from the hardships of WW2. Food rationing only ended in 1954. Watching this it seems to me there are very few positives about the modern Britain. Obviously advances in medical science, and perhaps greater choice in what we can purchase but not much else. The people in the film have a strong national identity and faith. Pace of life is slower, the streets are cleaner and safer. In short a better more civilised society. The Churchill statue so proudly unveiled here is subject to regular vandalism. The local hospitals are shut, as increasingly are local police stations. I lived in the Woodford and Loughton area for most of my life, so I know it well. I hate going back there now because it has become so shabby in comparison to what it once was. It is impossible to turn the clock back, but my heart weeps when I watch this to think of what we have lost. Our generation have betrayed our forefathers who sacrificed so much for their country. Our politicians through their incompetence and neglect, and us through our apathy have let it slide into terminal decline.
