This amateur film records the junction on the London to Southend road in South Woodford known as Charlie Brown's roundabout. In the year the film was made, the area was significantly altered in order to make link roads for the M11 motorway. Much attention is placed on the large public house called 'The Roundabout', and its pub sign, a model merry-go-round on a tall pole. This film is held at Redbridge Museum, Local Studies and Archives. My family owned the Roundabout for years - Charlie Brown was the name of both my great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather - and I was born in the Roundabout. First time I've seen video of the pub which is amazing but very sad to see it demolished to make way for a hideous flyover.

Rachel Proctor I was too young at the time to go in The Roundabout but it was an important local feature, used to ride my bike up and down the ramp next to the pub, then go over to Ted's caff for egg and chips...

Was consideration given to relocating the Roundabout pub elsewhere or was that not an option? Also what buildings currently stand on the former site of the Roundabout pub?

wickiezulu The Roundabout pub was completely demolished and there is now a huge multi-lane flyover junction over the actual roundabout.

wickiezulu also, Lamb's Garage which used to sell Triumph sports cars and Mill Garage on the roundabout which sold MGs went also. As a teenager my friends and I would go on a Saturday morning and sit in the Spitfires and Midgets.

Also depicted in this film is Child's Corner, which was a row of shops at the corner of Maybank and Southend roads. It, along with whole streets of lovely old thirties suburban semis and The Banks Of Southend Road was flattened when they built that awful monstrosity of a road.

wow and thank you. What a find. Such a shame that the pub was destroyed and the houses to make way for the concrete mess of the M11. I live in St Barnabas now and it is great to see some history of the area. The Roundabout pub looks very similar to the fairlop oak.

I used to live in Fairview Gardens as a kid. Sometimes as a treat, mum, dad and I might go and sit outside the roundabout pub on the wall with a drink and wonder where all the traffic was going............

Thank you so much for putting this on KZfaq. I grew up around that area, first in Ashford Road then in Summit Drive, used to ride my push bike around the back of Mill Garage and Lambs, the banks of Southend Road, hang out with the bikers at Ted's transport cafe, I'd get on the no 10 bus to school outside Child's Corner... never thought I'd ever see those places again!

Despite the changes 50 years ago (as of 17/01/2022) - much of the area is still reasonably recognisable

I remember the roundabout pub, Ted's cafe and the sweetshop and post office. Now we have the North circular. A bloody eyesore.

I used to live in South Woodford as a Child. I remember Childs corner, buying sweets in the sweet shop and the parade of shops. There was a barbers shop there where my mum took me to have my hair cut, also a "Wavy line" grocers and a Post Office are the only shops i remember. I also recall cycling down the Southend road on the pavement from Gates Corner, catching the 123 or 144 bus to Ilford to go shopping. What a sorry state the area looks in prior to demolition! Now ruined forever.

Love the old pre-warboys signage on the streets - obviously not converted in anticipation of demolition in the 1970s. Area unrecognisable really save the actual round about which is still in place but of far less significance than it was during the time of this film.

Ted's Transport Cafe opposite the pub. Was it Mills Garage on the other corner? The MG Dealership.

In my memory the pub was the Roundabout and the transport cafe was Charlie Browns. Have I been wrong all this time - was it Ted's cafe (rings a bell), so what or who was Charlie Brown who gave his name to the road junction / roundabout and is still known by that name?

More roads means more traffic. More public transport means less traffic.

Exactly cdgh99, The motorway building project was taking it toll long before and after the Beeching Rail Cuts, Some of the UK rail branchlines should have never be sold off for this so call road building project and livelyhoods, busineses have been destroyed just to build the flipping flyover for more road traffic

Rachel Proctor, you must have been sad indeed .. I remember that place very well, in fact I have a (poor) photo of the place when it was newly-built and men were still working on the road roundabout which formed part of the new Southend Arterial Road .. The bare post for the as-yet unmounted merry-go-round is seen in the picture .. Do you know what happened to that merry-go-round? .. I've often wondered.

Thay weren't blaming the heavy rain on global warming back in 1972 it just happened. 2021 a week of rain and its a global warming problem. When it's sunny for a week it's climate change .. 🤔
